It's 1899.

It's 1899. Martians invade with their giant tripods, targeting Earth's most important cities (especially London). But these Martians aren't weak to our viruses. Using the technology of the time, how can we fight back? The Martians' capabilities are:
>Giant tripod machines that are piloted by a single alien that are basically immune to handheld guns. A dreadnought was able to damage one with its ship-mounted cannons
>Each machine can spew "black smoke" that just kills humans who touch it
>London, which is the Martians' highest priority, is attacked by around 10~ of them, none of which is significantly damaged. Their numbers outside of this are unclear
>After a while, the Martians are able to patch together some flying machines, but these still move at speeds humans can easily perceive

    >A dreadnought was able to damage one with its ship-mounted cannons
Technically a pre-dreadnought ship in that time period
Any way heavy artillery on land could presumably damage it; problem is they would lack mobility
I guess you'd have to fire a lot of light artillery at it or bait them into attacking forts
    >Each machine can spew "black smoke" that just kills humans who touch it
Depending on what it's made of it could be countered by gas masks; crude ones were already use in mines at the time
    >flying machines, but these still move at speeds humans can easily perceive
Shoot them down with autocannons; those were already a thing

Not quite, the closest was effectively an upscaled revolver.

Upscaled machineguns like the pom-pom weren't around until the 1910s.

Not even a pre-dreadnought, a fricking torpedo boat.
Proper fleets would frick the martians up.

      >Any way heavy artillery on land could presumably damage it; problem is they would lack mobility
The key is masked batteries and forward observers with heliographs.
Martians literally can't see them coming.
Maybe somebody would also be able to invent some sort of land battleship with 1910 level of technology such as tractors.

Exactly, they don't seem to have any indirect fire capability and though the tripods are highly mobile they're low in numbers and seem to lack any real command and control

If they can already be damaged by kinetic weapons (as HMS Thunderchild proved) then it is pretty much a question of scaling up firepower and penetration to match
HEAT charges might be enough to do the job, tandem charges and more advanced armour piercing will definitely be capable of penetrating a tripod.
The gas is a more serious concern, especially if it kills on contact like modern nerve agents, but since it is localised to the areas around the tripods its not a strategic threat.
As for how to do the job, the most reliable way is probably to lure the tripods into range of direct fire heavy artillery and just pound the ever-loving shit out of them with HE or (if available) armour piercing naval shells

This was always a stupid fricking scenario borne of ignorance, granted very understandable ignorance for the time period, but still makes no sense even a few decades later. Like sure fun make believe for the time, but if you understand orbital dynamics you understand that if they have the kind of capability to send that much mass to earth they can just obliterate every major population center from orbit first. There is nothing humanity of that era can do.

      >makes no sense
      >if you understand orbital dynamics
      haha, heat ray go fwoosh
Anyway, if you can understand orbital dynamics you should be able to consider the possibility that the Martians are just moronic or deluded. Maybe the whole army is a Russian tier cargo cult stuck with ancient equipment and no idea how to use it. Maybe bombarding cities from orbit is dishonourable and will cost political capital back home. Maybe the whole thing is just sport to them, like hunting is to us.
