would be based if Italy goes with the Lynx, you're already gonna license produce Leopard 2A8 and likely gonna join MGCS too

I wish we would license produce FREMM in return but we already decided on the inferior F125/F126 instead...

      t. German

also I think the AA gun is produced by Rheinmetall Italia anyway so would make sense to go for that

Are they going to upgrade the Ariete, or are they going to dump it, and be the first larger military to stop using tanks?

upgrading the Ariete was planned too according to the last articles I read

yup I also think the Lynx would be better, it is the newer vehicle after all and also seems pretty reliable after having learned from the Puma's faults.

Sexo. Also, the froggies managed to squeeze 4 Mistrals in the SAM module, doubling the missile payload from the initial 2.

are you talking about the SAM module on the Skyranger 30 turret? How did they manage to fit 4 Mistrals in there? Or do you mean some other turret?

Well, admittedly it was a just mock-up, but they apparently managed to get them to fit.

Found a pic of the mock-up. It's an ugly bodge job, and sticks out of the compartment when folded, instead of neatly tucking in, but twice the munitions count is a pretty strong argument.

would be very cool if this actually worked but I kinda doubt it. Skyranger 30 turret seems a bit cramped and Mistral is a bit larger than e.g. Stinger afaik.

Well, they can't advertise something which outright doesn't work, because of legal liabilities.
I suspect the difference comes from operating concept.
The original 2-missile module has separate targeting units for each missile (those small squares underneath the warheads) for extra redundancy, whereas the Mistral module ditches them, using instead the main radar/IRST combo unit (thus freeing up space in the equipment pod for more missiles). And, as I've stated above, it's not flush-fitting with the rest of the turret when folded, unlike the original 2-missile pod.

People here are saying Lynx, but actually I think they might be joining Ascod2.
Now that USA is using the platform (its the basis for both the M10 and the upcoming OMFV, aka the Bradley replacement), GDELS is pushing for adoption elsewhere, and it has few downsides given how customizable it is. This would explain the whole international cooperation thing as GDELS has a looot of branches, plus its already cooperated with Italy in the past. We'll see tho.
If you ask me what my actual preference (not just what I think is most likely) is, I'm hoping for another wheelie boy. Maybe they join the Piranha V family, or just do a Centauro v2. That would be based af. 8x8 are tight and Italy is good at those. But I doubt we'll be so blessed.

said, its gonna be tracked. So no boxers either. It's either ascod, lynx, v90, an italian tracked ifv project or cv90. Presented in order of likelihood by my estimate.

both the Netherlands and Canada tried dumping tanks and they've both come back on their mistake

That's because they tried to outright shitcan them, instead of replacing them with something vaguely similar.
The Italians could try doing an experimental comparison between a mech inf brigade that uses assault guns (like the one in OPs pic) instead of tanks, and a regular tank-equipped one (since they will theoretically operate both types).

I think he's referring to the GAZ Tigr. Standard Russian infantry transporter in the first part of the war. The mechanical parts are clones of the Iveco LMV. Russia paid to license produce the LMV then simply stole the mechanical designs and "create" the Tigr and stopped paying.

It has two main purposes. The officially stated purpose is reducing escalation, basically avoiding the usual Russian chimpouts of “we destroyed 173% of the ______ you sent” and “if you send ______ that is a red line, we're gonna nooooook”. The unofficial (and main) purpose is to avoid giving any political ammo to parties opposed to sending weapons (both in the government and the opposition). If they can't publicly say what you sent, as it is classified, they can't b***h about it. This started under the previous government (Draghi), which was a broad coalition including both tankie-adjacent parties (Partito Democratico) and pro-Russian populists (Lega).

They have been getting bigger and bigger across the world for a while.

They are trying to make them impervious to everything, and keep adding modules over modules.

I don't know how I feel. Much of the west made every vehicle into a death Star, super expensive to the point that actual Mass production Is impossible and losing a single machine turns into a strategic disaster.

What worries me more is the fact that nobody can design stuff on its own anymore, you always need joint programs with other nations because neither has enough money or tech to make stuff.

          but that’s not true

          >Wouldn't it make more sense to just max out the navy?
Italy has 2 Harrier/F-35B aircraft carriers and 3 helicopter carriers. They have maxed out their navy.

iirc there are talks for a fourth one

we will NOT talk about Italy on /k/

          WILL NOT

why? cause of the Ariana Grande schizo?

They're building a 3rd aircraft carrier right now but the oldest one will be retired some time after it gets into service. Giuseppe Garibaldi was built in 1985 and is showing its age, and I don't think they have the budget to support 3 carriers at once.
The 3 helicopter carriers are planned to be replaced at the end of the decade.

which goes to reinforce my point, why is it a state secret?
bc it's politically damaging to be seen by the Italian population sending weapons because they're almost all cucked pacifists

            >why ariana grande tho
he posts a tweet from 2013 iirc where she claims to have taken a DNA ancestry test and found out she was mainly north african instead of south italian or something, of course that’s definitive proof that all italians are 100% african

Funnily enough, Ariana Grande translates to Big Aryan

I never really understood why Italy has such a good army. It's got the alps and a bunch of Germanic volk protecting it from any land invasion. Wouldn't it make more sense to just max out the navy?
Or is this just stuff for a NATO commitment?

Italy doesn't have a very good army. What's described in the OP may change that though.

The army is the weakest part of the italian armed forces. They DO max out the navy and air force. As of now, italian ground troops are little more than glorified night watchmen stationed semipermanenetly at railroad stations
