Thats pretty much where ERA on the TUSK mod go, the sides and lower hull where armor is weaker

      Anonymous

Wait this enitre time when Americans were bullying the Challenger for the lower front hull getting penned by a Milan (leading to a total hull loss of the Driver's toes) the Abrams had the exact same lower front hull profile and TUSK fixed it in the exact same way as the Streetfighter upgrade (i.e massively chonking it with bolt on armour).

turret bustle, what appears to one big slab on the lower hull, and turret side
only difference the ukranians made is to the UFP, due to the lack of composite armor there

        https://i.imgur.com/k8TZku1.jpeg

We don't really know what tanks ukrainians got. US changed the NERA package for something tailored to ukraine, as we can see from the numbers on the turret of that damaged abrams russians captured.

they got M1A1s that were reset to zero hour
they also have a thermal camera on their RWS, which acts like a ghetto CITV

they lack DU, though supposedly they added more NERA to compensate which was common on saudi arabian exports
it is unknown what the added composite armor looks like since the turret armor remains the same thickness

    Anonymous

Looks like they came up with their own add-on kit for the skirts, too.
Interesting that the Ukies didn't think the turret needed more protection, though.

      Anonymous

Turret is already ATGM protected, so ERA is just extra weight there

Sideskirts are where the US puts their own ERA, because composite sideskirts reduce in effectiveness when hit perpendicular, so ERA can still help
Frontal Hull is the only atypical arrangement, though it might be due to not having any good hulldown positions or if its heavy ERA then to protect against long rods

        Anonymous

what rods? it's clearly protection against fpv drones

          Anonymous

Lower hull is still 115mm and RPG-7 protected
If its regular ERA, then its probably for stopping ATGMs
If its heavy ERA, then its because of 125mm KE rounds

Well we didn't give them the upgraded Abrams only the shitty versions so this should be encouraged. Not sure it would help against lancets though, which are the Abrams' only real threat

I was referring to the one on display in Moscow moron

It was on video that was spammed on here by ESL street shitters back in like February or so. It took a direct hit to the side of the turret. The same spot we see on the zigger pics of the one on display. The same one that they had to lower the gun with a fricking cement slab because the gun up was still too powerful of an image and didn’t show the propaganda image that was desired. Also they didn’t know how to use the manual elevation crank

Kontakt-1 is probably the worst ERA there is. I know some Ukrainian crew members expressed interest for ARAT-2 for extra protection. It's not added to the front. Also with the proliferation of top attack drones the blow out panels on the top of Abrams still remain vulnerable. The russians aren't that stupid and are targeting the blow out panels from the top. The Abrams needs to some added protection to the top to defend the panels. The engine bay is also vulnerable.

      Anonymous

is there a shred of evidence the Russians are targeting blowout panels when that doesn't kill the tank, only forces it to retreat for new panels and ammo?

    Unironically needs a cope cage.
    >B-but the blowout panels
Blowout panel doesn't magically save the tank, it just keeps the crew from exploding instantly. Maybe they have to lose a few more M1s to learn the lesson. They should get some better ERA while they are at it, got plenty of money coming in they can afford it.

      >Blowout panel doesn't magically save the tank,
it saves the tank entirely by normal and mundane means that work entirely as advertised

      > it just keeps the crew from exploding instantly
it keeps the crew from exploding at all, since the ammo fires are vented away from them
the only reason it wouldnt work is if the blast doors were compromised

        Anonymous

Not entirely. Anyone who takes a hit that sets the ammo off isn't going to say
        >Oh its just the ammo cooking off, we are totally fine we can just drive back to base.
they are going to jump the frick out and run. This leaves the fire to get into the crew compartment through the hatches ruining the tank. Its for saving the crew, not the tank. I know I wouldn't be trusting those blast doors right next to me as they heat up to ungodly levels. The sound must be incredible too.

          >they are going to jump the frick out and run.

What do US Abrams crew do in that event? (Citation required)
By what experience do you presume to speak for trained tankers?
The system wasn't just pulled out of someones arse. Both testing and combat videos exist.

Unprofessional raghead TC bails, driver remains controlling the tank. Had the doors failed driver would have roasted as would the TC before escaping.

We aren't talking about american tankers, these are slavs that run at the drop of a hat. I know its been tested and proven but in the heat of the moment who knows what a person will do when the ammo gets howling and those doors get toasty. Don't give me that "what experience do you have" shit.

            >Its for saving the crew, not the tank
although it does a good job at saving the tank anyways, because the lack of turret tossing can turn a total loss into a temporary loss

M1s hit by literal maverick missiles were not successfully scuttled and eventually returned to service

I know but the ukraine doesn't have the means to get M1 tanks refurbished and back quick from a total wreck like america does. Any bit of preventative measures available should be taken to keep the tanks and their crews safe. If that means swallowing their pride and popping some cope cages on there so be it, the israelites did it.

              >I know but the ukraine doesn't have the means to get M1 tanks refurbished and back quick from a total wreck like america does.
it means the blowout panels are absolutely capable of saving the tank, simply because the damage to the tank is less extensive to begin with
electronics are likely to survive because they arent roasted in a flame
armor is also likely to survive bease the metal isnt structurually weakned by a raging inferno

no matter how you slice it, the blow out panels save both the crew and the tank

                Anonymous

The biggest issues with regards to a blowout is fire over the engine deck that spreads downwards, and burning material getting into the tank if a hatch on the turret is open.
The blast-door into the turret should limit anything else if it is closed

                >tank gets repaired

unless you would rather the entire tank explode in an inferno and kill both the tank and the crew

Lower glacis plates tend to be quite lightly armored.

lower frontal plate is thinner than the turret, but still protected against RPGs and tank-launched HEAT
ERA might help against large-sized ATGMs, but to a limited degree due to tandem warheads being more widespread on them than RPGs
