Gorod-Geroi? Googs tells me this means hero city but I thought a gorod was an individual fort or castle, not a whole city or town

freaking *krn*/*krd* words, there are so many of them. it's nice that they mostly preserve some sense of the original core(look ma, I found one!) meaning. Even if you only look at a single language at a time, you can find a shitload of them. Start looking at IE languages broadly and there's a whole forest of these words

I don't think people from civilized countries understand just how shit things are outside the capital in countries like russia or india. A significant portion of the population live the majority of their life in almost the exact same way they would have during the 18th or 19th century in some parts, just with smartphones and maybe basic electricity a few hours of the day. It's like the stories you hear where women traveling in india get raped, go to the police station and then get raped again by every cop there. In parts of india there are brutal tribal clashes with muskets, AKs and machetes happening every few days and literally no one outside of india report on them.
Things aren't quite as bad in rural russia but large parts have towns with 95%+ unemployment and people living on like 30 to 40 bucks a month.
        I recommend watching from about 16:58 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejtOIh-YJB0
Absolute fricking misery-porn, russia is like a parody of a nation invented by garth ennis for one of his edgy comics

It really is a night and day difference.
I live in a small town a ways from the largest city in my province, and things are more comfortable here compared to the city.
There's plenty of space, all the sorts of shops you'd see in the city, most housing is on par with some of the nicer areas in the city, there's a toilet in every home, one cop for every 3 people, no garbage on the streets to be seen, and just saying this shit makes me think "yeah, that's what it's supposed to be".

            Anonymous

Here a small town is generally considered a cozy place to be. Some towns have half the houses as just summer-houses for well off people, the remaining ones usually have businesses and a thriving local community. The worst off small towns only really have an issue with bored teens doing rallies or maybe graffiti-ing stuff.
Things like entire towns being unemployed and drunk and a large chunk of it's population sent out to die in some war thousands of kilometers away just doesn't exist here. We got rid of them in like the 17th century

This is a big difference between shithole and developed countries, yes. Cherry picked images don't do justice to the difference in the average levels of development across the countries.

Muscovites is a term describing the inhabitants of the Grand Duchy of Moscow before they started unironically believing in their LARP of being the rulers of Rus. It doesn't actually have to describe people living in Moscow specifically.

Building looks different, could be lighting, but did they really dig up the road that far back to repave that area? Might just be shitty paving

russians just seem to have zero value for human life. What kind of sick fricks would deploy weapons over their own civilians? There's a russian I follow online who is from belgorod who is worried sick her parents are going to get blown up, and is constantly running fundraisers for people whose houses got blown up who don't have power or blankets or anything, because the government sure as shit isn't going to help them.

Too busy spending $800,000,000 per s400 and then leaving them abandoned in muddy fields.
