Why are they banned in the US?

Yes. Should only be able to get a truck or SUV if you have a good reason to own one. Otherwise, get a sedan, wagon, or minivan and stop driving these overpriced, overkill, and overcompensating vehicles.

        Chicken tax probably.

Probably doesn’t meet emissions or safety regulations, considering it’s been replaced in the US and EU since the Tacoma’s release

The tacoma is fine, it just needs to get the diesel option that the hilux gets.

What’s the difference between a Hilux and a Tacoma? I thought Tacoma’s were the same thing, just with a different name for the US market

Anyone gimme qrd re: difference so I don't have to listen to a half hour Doug video?
No hate on the guy he's pretty funny and clearly researches his shit, it's just 20 degrees here, overcast and grey, and I have just enough seasonal affective disorder that I can't sit through the whole thing.

What are the actual differences between this and a 4Runner? 4Runner TRD Pro's are assembled in Japan and use the same engine and frame, no?

            https://www.drivingline.com/articles/tacoma-or-hilux-americas-toyota-pickup-vs-the-worlds-toyota-pickup/

            >The Basics
            >While they may look very similar to a casual observer, the Tacoma is a very different truck than the Hilux. However, the current generation of each has been on the market for about the same time.

            >Both trucks went on sale in 2015 with the Texas-built Tacoma entering its third generation and the Hilux entering its eighth generation with factories around the world, including Thailand, which is a huge market for the truck.

            >Size
            >You expect everything to be bigger in America, and that's definitely the case when it comes to comparing size of the Tacoma and the Hilux—though perhaps not as much as you'd think. The popular double cab, short bed Tacoma is approximately two inches longer than a similar spec Hilux.

            >It's basically the same when it comes to width, with the Tacoma coming in about two inches wider than a comparable Hilux. This is expected with American roads and parking spots typically larger than you find in the Hilux' big markets.

            >Engine Options
The engine options for the American market Tacoma have always been pretty simple, and that's still the case today. Base model trucks come with a 2.7L four-cylinder engine, but the majority of Tacomas are powered by a 3.5L V6 engine.

            >The Hilux also has gasoline four-cylinder and V6 engine options depending on market, but its the four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that is most common.

            >These turbodiesel range between 2.4 and 3.0 liters in displacement, and as you'd expect their horsepower figures aren't impressive but their torque numbers are, with outputs of up to 370 pound feet.

I think these are still available with the manual transmission, which is something I prefer immensely.
In fact that's why I'm still looking at a Tacoma instead of a 4 runner for my next car, Taco still has stick shift as an option.

As far as I'm aware the Taco only gets the stick with the gutless 4cyl though. Personally I don't really see the point in a manual truck, I drove nothing but stick DDs for almost 20 years and would never get an auto in a sports/sporty car but I've never wished my truck was stick.
