They want to remove hand skills as a factor, which certainly sounds like gay s0yb0y shit but makes sense when you see their reasoning. Somebody who knows their way around a drill press could absolutely make some really nice garage SMGs while using 3d printing for the furniture and finishes, but its not really the point. The idea is to have something that anybody with access to a printer could make, because the view is that requiring any kind of material skill or tools is soft gatekeeping and it needs to be accessible to the most helpless neet. The outcome will always be shittier than a design that is strengthened with other materials, but theres no barrier to entry that can be restricted away. Eg, California once tried to ban CNC machines until they realized that they aren't just used to make gun parts.

Once that's reasonable you only need to worry about ammo.
Once both are easy and commonplace, gun control will be forever dead.

You could just buy a lathe instead of a 3d printer though, couldn't you? Machining can't be that hard, even machinists can do it.

          >You could just buy a lathe instead of a 3d printer though,
to be able to do what is needed? you could buy 25 printers, or a clapped out lathe that needs a bunch of work in refurbishment, replacement parts, shipping and installation (including a 3phase plug) and a place to put it with a concrete foundation, and thousands of dollars in stock material to practice making scrap with.
I wonder why people gravitate towards printing more commonly.

          Anonymous

It isn't hard. It just takes hours and hours to learn how to use machine tools well, and they're prohibitively expensive and take up lots of space.
I want prospective rooftop chinamen to be able to push a button on a $100 machine they keep in a closet and crank out an Uncle Ganbei popper inside half a day from recycled plastic bags.

          Anonymous

dude, you do know that lathes that can machine metal are huge and heavy as frick, right? And you have to know how to use it? Machinists are probably more intelligent (at least mechanically) than the vast majority of people, who are, if you didn't notice, total morons who probably don't even deserve the gift of consciousness they've been given. Anyway, a printer is like $200 and is nearly as simple as pressing PRINT, whereas a real lathe is thousands of dollars, won't fit in an apartment, is loud, doesn't plug in to a normal wall socket, can maim the user, and requires machining knowledge. It's not even close.

          Anonymous

Lathes are large, expensive and loud.

      >getting to 100% printing
as an euro that would be my dream. outside of the US most countries still regulate barrels, slides etc while frames are fre for all ( I can buy ar15 lowers without even showing an ID, same with full auto parts but I can't legally mount them, while buying a glock barrel or ar15 upper requires a gun license)
As of right now 3d printed guns outside of the us are kind of a meme if your objective is the free distribution of weapons to civilians

        Anonymous

Anon the whole FGC-9 project was to address this issue specifically. You can make a barrel from easy to acquire materials with the ECM process.
Ammunition is still trickier but Euro anons were reloading brass casings they had purchased as scrap brass and casting their own bullets.
There are a couple other projects right now making DIY shotgun shells.

      Anonymous

Half the drive behind 3d printed guns is to get as many guns into people's hands as possible, especially in places where gun control is draconian. So while someone in the US can easily print the frame of the gun then buy the barrel/BCG/muzzle device/mags/ammo/etc. online to actually make into a workable gun someone with cucked gun laws won't be able to do it nearly as easily. Hence why people are trying to make them with as many 3d printed parts as possible. They've gotten pretty close, but as far as I know every design worth a shit still needs an aftermarket barrel and BCG to actually function which makes it still out of reach for many people.

But even if we do get to a 100% printed gun with a magically strong barrel and bolt how the hell are people expected to actually practice or buy ammo to feed their guns? Hell, J stark had to resort to reloading his own ammo and shooting out in the middle of the woods just to keep under the radar. Anyone living near a city and without access to reloading components is fricked. Until you can print some kind of wonder plastic that functions as a pressure bearing component, propellant, case, and primer the idea is more or less dead in the water.

It's the groznt bulpup ak chassis created by dinka roubles (file's sailing the odd sea). With a few ergonomic modifications I did in tinkercad. I printed mine in pa6-cf and pla+. I put it on my m70 but the files came with a few versions that should fit most 7.62 and 5.45 ak variants

So far I've put 250 rounds through it (mostly bump fire lol) and I've had zero issues. It's weird but somehow just works, like surprisingly well. Trigger is meh but not bad for a bulpup, and the cheekweld on the dustcover is suprisingly comfortable. Also shrunk my 16 inch m70 to the size of a 10.5 ar so that's pretty sweet. Definitely worth printing or at least checking out imo. Really fun pice of kit.

Lpvo is useless btw. I just thought it looked neat on the gun lol.

I don't really understand the reluctantly of not creating hybrid designs with embedded metal parts. If you have the competence to setup up a printer, surely you can fabricate small metal components with a angle grinder, drill and a file. Even a basic b***h fluxcore welder is like a 100 bucks and you can learn to stick metal together in an afternoon.
