IQ is such a broad term that it is meaningless. The person who can win a marathon and a person who can lift 400 lbs are not the same, athletic-wise. Autists have their own strengths, and it's good to make use of them and make them feel useful.

Savantism is just a very appealing characteristic of some cases of autism so it is often remarked on. But it is very often secondary to the actual diagnostics. Autism is in general very appealing to the public as a disorder and receives several times the funding of other, often more severe mental disorders. Public perception of autism is completely skewed and detached from reality, leading to confusion about its characteristics.

Being highly intelligent created a degree of social disconnect because high IQ is usually pared with low EQ, which unlike the former, can actually be trained and increase. I'm a psych major who's currently studying for a Ph.D. in psychology and despite being STEM the shit is so obscure and smoky it feels like I'm studying humanities.
