Is this a stupid first gun?

Noguns here been lurking a long long time- I'm finally ready to pull the trigger for the first time. I've shot other people's guns many times, semi auto rifles, pistols, but I've never owned one for myself.
The Mosin has always been a gun that interests me and I like the looks. I'm not in this for hurr durr cheap rifle cheap ammo, I know what I'm getting into and willing to drop the appropriate money to get a good one.
Am I stupid for this being the gun I want first? I don't see a reason not to other than practicality, but I can always get a cheap Maverick 88 for the house later on for very little.
My other option is a CZ 457. I want the first gun I have not to be a piece of shit and actually be something I like a lot.

why is that your other option?

22s are great cause cheap, 457 seems like a nice 22 I won't regret buying. Also will use one in place of my air rifle to hunt squirrels if I get one.

It was my first gun back when a nice one cost $140 and you could get 440rds of surplus for $70. Those days are long gone, ne'er to return. Ammo costs are on par with .308 now, so it is what it is. Other than that I think it's a great first gun, especially if you're a deer hunter. I've taken a white tail with my Mosin every year since I bought it. They're fun, buy a Finnish one

Yep I plan to get a Finnish one- an m39. Cool!

      >Is this a stupid first gun?
Objectively yes, but if you do your research and can get a good deal then you'll have a shitty gun that is very charming in it's shittyness. My first rifle was a mosin back in 2018 and I have no regrets. Just be sure to never, ever sell it.

      >Charming in its shittyness
      This anon gets it
Is gunbroker a bad place to buy one? Any specific problems to look out for besides counterboring, stock cracking, shot out bores?

      >is a Mosin a dumb first gun
Yes, the recoil creates bad habits like flinching and the rifle itself is a garbage rod. If I could do it all over again I would have asked for a 10/22 or some sort of lever action .22 as my first gun. You can get a cheap used .22 for under $200 at any gunstore.
      >t. first gun was an m44 my dad got me for my birthday back in the early 2000s.

I think I am experienced enough to be past flinching, but thank you for the warning there. A cheap old bolt action 22 was my third pick, but I want my first gun to be something I can pass on, hence the 457.

A 91/30 was my first gun in 2011. It was 50 bucks, with a can of 440 Czech silver tip for 70. Nowadays, surplus are getting more expensive and rarer. I would should just simple buy an AR-15. Some are cheap enough below the 400

even if I get a PSA like i've considered for 450 or whatever I still have to furnish glass, mags, etc, plus I know that I will absolutely burn ammo like a retard. I'm going to start on a manual action to get the most enjoyment out possible.

      >been lurking a long long time

      Bravo

shitty in the sense of being breakable, doesn't have character or hold stories. I'm also not planning on any 300 dollar 91/30 either.

Gunbroker is ok, you can find some good deals. However I'd suggest buying one in person so you can at lease finger fuck it and see whats going on with it before you buy

An m39 is basically the best of the mosins. Personally I really like the M91s. Make sure you always clean it really well after shooting corrosive. Hot water and CLP is your friend. Also you need to get into the habit of pulling the stock into the meat of your shoulder tight.

          How bad are m44s?

They're smaller and lighter, but the recoil is a bit worse and there's a lot more muzzle flash/concussion. The folding bayonet adds a lot to the cool factor too.

It has harsher "perceived recoil" due to increase muzzle blast. Actual recoil is less. M44s weighs more than a 91/30s with no bayonet. M38s and 91/59s are actually lighter, but in all honestly the recoil really ain't that much worse and they just rise more due to being lighter.

YMMV but my Finn is the second worst Mosin that I own because the barrel is trashed. People fangirl over them because muh Finns but they really aren't that different from 91/30s, I wouldn't pay that much more for one

You need to get better taste or pick 1 out of the 2 options. Everything you listed is just bad or only good "for the price"

No. Get the gun you want.

A gun you think is cool is a gun you'll be more likely to shoot and train with. Buying some gun you don't actually like just because it's not "optimal" or "minmaxed" or some shit is fucking dumb. Like you say, you can always buy a more practical gun down the track.
At the end of the day it's nice for your first gun to be something special too you unless you're buying purely for utilitarian reasons.

The Finn Mosin isn't a POS, they're generally at least 2 MOA accurate and the iron sights are easily and accurately adjusted. Many do have the problem of shooting high with anything that isn't milspec D166 ammo though, so either find a high replacement front sight blade or handload until you find the sweet spot

Nah man, its your first gun, make it something cool.

    >I can always get a cheap Maverick 88 for the house later on for very little.
I'd go with the Beretta APX or similarly priced pistol over a Maverick 88 as your more practical second gun, any gun will be enough gun for 9/10 defensive gun use scenarios and a pistol gives you the option to conceal carry if you need to (even if you don't have a permit, it may be worth having the option, for example after a natural disaster or during a temporary period of civil unrest). A pistol is also more convenient to carry in a potential home defense scenario where you don't know if a gun is needed yet - say someone's knocking at the door but not trying to kick it down, or your gf thinks she heard something at night but you didn't.

Just get the 22lr bolt I think you'll find it to be quite fun. I once bought an old single shot 22lr that was made in the late 30s and spent a good 4-5 hours just shooting at tin cans and steel plates at 50-100y. Nothing against the mosin I got one as my first but ammo is getting more expensive so if your beginner your not gonna get much practice.

Mosins are a marvel of practicality and reliability, and despite the shitposting, are quite accurate as long as barrel isn't shot out

That said, they are no longer cheap, which begs the question - are they good guns *for the price*? You could get many other options that could be more interesting and not that much more expensive. For starters, a Russian SKS tends to be higher quality cause they're not wartime manufacture, and generally made when Soviet firearms industry was significantly more advanced. Or you could go for like a Brit .303 Enfield or Swiss straight-pull 7.5 etc etc. Yes those are more expensive for rifle and ammo but it's no longer 5x difference, maybe 2x at most. And if you're in one of more free states of the US, you could walk around a gun show and get a 1940s civilian market gun that is likely better and cheaper than a Mosin. Say, a decent quality army training .22 rifle, which would also be ridiculously cheap to shoot.

That said, a Mosin is a great choice, I've owned many and they never dissappointed, so if you want one, get one (don't get a shortened one tho, they're uncomfortable to shoot).

Mosins are alright and are fun to shoot and collect. But as a new shooter it will give you bad habits because of the recoil. Also protip, russian mosins need a bayonet to shoot to point of aim. If you cant even hit paper thats why

It made sense when garbage rods were $80 and 54R cost 10 cpr.
    Now it's peak retarded.
