realistically it's a gun. it's just missing parts that make it functional.

Yeap... if its late at night and someone tries to flash that grip to me and I am shooting my whole mag at him/her/they/them

If that's the gun being pointed at my head i can say whatever i want because it's not functional. But yes it is a gun, it's the component of the gun that's legally defined as a firearm and it'll probably work once you put all the other bits back on. Spending too much time worrying about whether language should be descriptive or definitive is sophistry.

This. It’s why I’ve never been too impressed by the hand wringing about “assault rifles” as a term. Everyone knows what a liberal means when they say it. Trying to dig your heels in and cry and scream about technical definitions just makes you look like you have no better argument.

        > just makes you look like you have no better argument.
Incorrectly labeling a gun is not an argument at all. we haven't even gotten to the argument stage yet. Whether or not someone has a better argument is a different topic for a different time. You can't have a serious discussion about anything if people aren't using terminology properly. And for this kind of thing it matters a great deal because we're talking about the specifics of law. Silly little minutiae is exactly what law is about. Everyone knows that liberals mean "scary black rifles that look like ARs and AKs", but the problem is that is hard to define, which makes having any meaningful further discussion impossible.

the problem is your entire tack is implicitly conceding that "assault rifles" are somehow worthy of legislation (by arguing definition) instead of arguing premise, which is "yes, and that's a good thing."
because the problem isn't that this or that feature isn't legally defined, it is that it is good for citizens to have weapons that will allow them to use lethal force against people who they think should be subjected to lethal force.

The realer questions is does it matter if its serialized or not? If it has a serial number, IT IS a gun right? If not, then it is a hunk of metal?

      > a gun only become a gun if it has the special american law magic number even it is just a lump of metal that can't shoot

Yes it's a fricking gun you moron. It's missing a bunch of parts to make it work, but is no less of a gun than a car with a missing engine is still a car.
Now frick off and die in a fire

A car without the parts to make it work is called a frame, or body, much like OP's picture depicts a frame for a gun.

      That’s the car.
      Where I am, yes that’s a gun.

that's a chassis not the car but aight, legal definition isn't really the best way to get your point across. a frame isn't a gun its the frame of a gun.
