Is the west even remotely prepared for attrition warfare?

Russia proofed in ukraine that they can keep using artilery with barely any downtime.
While westerners are used to the comfort of only having to face tribesmen which gave them massive downtime for repairs and replacements.

It actually is, the ukrainians are losing insane amounts of manpower, to the point that you can't see any regular troops anymore on frontlne footage, all just conscripts.

            Based Charlie Magne Poster

this. ukraine had originally promised a major offensive in late may/early june, the reason they haven't done shit is because they can't train their new conscripts fast enough to keep up with their losses so they've never been able to build up a reserve force for any kind of offensive.

Do you have a source on that?

              Source?

              A source. I need a source.

Sorry, I mean I need a source that explicitly states your argument. This is just tangential to the discussion.

No, you can't make inferences and observations from the sources you've gathered. Any additional comments from you MUST be a subset of the information from the sources you've gathered.

You can't make normative statements from empirical evidence.

Do you have a degree in that field?

A college degree? In that field?

              Then your arguments are invalid.

No, it doesn't matter how close those data points are correlated. Correlation does not equal causation.

You have to understand their tactical doctrine. For western armies, the point of artillery is keeping heads down or performing decapitating strikes in advance of troop insertion.

For the Russians, artillery, due to never being as accurate, is used to flatten elevated ambush points as much as possible before committing to the charge for mopup operations. That's why GRAD's are still in such common operation vice howitzer-style artillery.

consider an analogy to kids throwing rocks at each other
America finds the best rock-thrower and the best rocks and says "hit that kid in the face"
Russia finds the 10 strongest kids and gives them a mountain of shitty rocks and says "hit something"

they're both valid tactics, but obviously against each other one will always win

So here's how Americans work. The United States sees that the Russians say they have a dragon. It's a great fire breathing beast that can lay ruin to the vast Great Plains and countryside. So the Americans put a few or 10 billion dollars to research a dragon-killing sword. The sharpest sword they can possibly make, with the purest metals. Even rare metals imported from afar. They'll even invent entirely new methods of production or refinement to get those metals. In the end, after about a decade and billions, the Americans wind up with a few swords that they are quite confident can kill a dragon.

Then they see that the dragon was a crocodile that the Russians tossed out of a IL-76 and rigged to a parachute. Yet the Americans still possess a dragon killing sword.

I see you come with a very generalised message designed to resonate with people of limited age intelligence or education. That's nice. Take America for example, a place that has only existed for 200 years which has a population consisting of British, Mexicans, American Natives, Black Slaves, Protestant Freemasons, Italian Irish and Polish Catholics, israelites, Chinese railroad workers, eskimos and frick knows what else, fragmented into 50 states with different laws and you want to talk about MULTICULTURALISM? REALLY? LIKE THERE WAS ONE CULTURE TO BEGIN WITH? WHEN? THE ANSWER IS FRICKING NEVER. Now I don't like the modern left at all, did not like the old ideological marxist left at all either but if there is one thing I would throw in the bucket with them as laughably moronic it is the vatnik seeded fricking bucket of piss you idiots echo. I don't know at what point Americans started referring to socialists as liberals ( that one is a fricking triumph of Russian and left wing propagandists as is the phase neo liberal ) , I don't know exactly when /misc/ turned into a poll of russian puke (it was always pretty shit) but I know it has. They can't even keep their tubes firing if they stick to the usual Russian precision of "somewhere in that direction" rather than western pinpoint accuracy. Their barrels are worn to the point that firing them is just a waste of ammunition, ammunition that they can't bring to the front in meaningful quantities.

    >just like it did Turkey.
Pure cope, Turks failed their equipment by misusing it and a case could be made that the defense sector failed the rest of the world by selling to roaches, but the equipment isn't to blame here.

      >Pure cope, Turks failed their equipment by misusing it and a case could be made that the defense sector failed the rest of the world by selling to roaches, but the equipment isn't to blame here.

The only cope here is from you. Turkey was one of the biggest clients / marketers of German equipment, and it all went downhill after Germany stopped selling.

Why do you think South Korean equipment has taken off lately? Who was using South Korean weaponry the past few decades before all this?... Turkey.

Turkey's weaponry is all battle-tested, either you make the cut or you don't. German weapons nowadays are junk. They sold weapons to Russia, while actively refusing to sell to Ukraine, even blocking defensive equipment like drone-jammers.

You've seen how much damage a few himars have done, now imagine the same but vs more himars and a fricking airforce deleting your batteries and logistical chain all the way back to the factory. All this has proofed is how hugely reliant russian tactics are on massed artillery, which wouldn't survive vs Western Air power

The US has highly accurate long range missile artillery and a powerful satelite system, you need vast stockpiles for attritional warfare, which is easy pickings for surgical strikes. Only reason why why dont give Ukraine the equipment to bomb Moscow is to slowly boil Russia so they don't realize whats going on.

Ukrainians reduced the fricking Russian army to a state where they can't mount armored offensives and instead trade artillery along with very slow frontlines, and they did this with western supplied AT weapons, followed by just a handful of western supplied short ranged guided rockets.

Imagine what would happen if Ukies actually had numbers of western tanks, aircraft or missile systems. The question you should be asking is why does Russian equipment suck so much? Why are Russians or Ukies both seemingly unable to mount an offensive? The answer lies in the soviet shit that they have.

      Anonymous

You forgot to mention Ukraine is using decades-old Western weapons and Russia has been using its latest, most modern armaments. Russia is still being annihilated.
The fact that Russia has anything left to use at all is because of soviet shit stockpiled from the Cold War. They don't have much else left because they can't make replacements fast enough.

      Anonymous

So, I wonder what happens next, more static warfare like in Donbas but on a long frontline? That sounds costly.

        Anonymous

My guesses are one of the following
        >Slow advance by Ukies over a few months, or a hard attack once enough material has been brought + men trained
        >Violent maneuver warfare attack by Russkies with troops brought from far east etc, massive missile and air strikes to collapse ukie lines at all cost
        >Shitty stalemate that lasts for who knows how long
War exhaustion will eventually hit all parties, so far there is no real diplomatic way out. Russians might try something cheeky like an assault through Belarus with Belarusian troops or a nuclear strike, but I don't see it particularly likely.

unironically some attempt at divide and conquer, Germany may not be up to snuff in the military area right now because they've gimped their military for 20+ years
Ultimately they just need enough purpose to get that industry and beaurocracy shifted so it stops fricking things up for Germany.

There is a clear distinction between the failed BW and the German arms industry. They're still producing modern, top quality and well used weapon systems - many that never see adoption by the BW.

          Anonymous

The thing is that the German industry is homegrown, just like Sweden's is. They can get their orders and sell stuff, but the only way you're getting a ton of vehicles, parts and things out in a timely manner is PURPOSE. Arming the BW can easily have the side-effect of making German MIC work faster and more efficiently by supercharging it with funds, and promoting changes in laws to facilitate less trouble in getting shit done.

I have heard that much of this may be due to Ukrainians have no idea how to properly maintain the systems given to them. M777 howitzers for example are regularly shipped leaveand for repair because there was not enough time to properly teach Ukrainians how to service them, just how to shoot them. My bet is, the German artillery is working as intended, and in the rush of getting the Ukrainians acquainted, maintenance was give short shrift.

it's due to the very high rates of fire they're experiencing- most guns have hourly and daily shell limits and ukies are blowing right past them (for good reason) causing extreme wear that requires depot-level service

I have to wonder about the kind of person shilling for vatniks on /k/
They don't seem to know much about weapons. They also don't seem to know much about European politics or economy.
So far so good. But this is where the really bizarre part starts - they also don't seem to have any familiarity with cars, tractors or any sort of automotive or heavy machinery.
They are unfamiliar with European cultures or countries outside of /misc/ stereotypes.
They seem unfamiliar with European, Russia or American climate and weather.
What the hell are they - Central Africans? Indian basement dwellers?

      Anonymous

You answered your own question. Leading up to and after the 2016 election, /misc/ became inundated with posts revolving around conservatism and a return to traditionalism, in response to liberal economic and social policy creating social disorder. PrepHole has always been somewhat rebellious in its structure, posters' anonymity along with site culture ensures that viewpoints contrary to accepted dogma will be more popular. Trump's meteoric and surprising victory only incensed most posters, causing /misc/'s conservative audience to become even further entrenched in their ideologies. In only a few years most posters who had been quite simple centrists or conservatives (and even some previous liberal posters such as myself) found themselves allying with any political ideology that favored a return to some form of traditionalism, even totalitarian dictatorships or theocracies of a radically opposing culture.

Posters latched onto the idea of a possible rise of Russian hegemony as a return to traditionalism of yesteryear, in which men were men, women were women, and the threat of rising liberalism and destruction of the family unit were stamped out. It is really no surprise why /misc/ runs cover for Russia, you would just need to spend an inordinate amount of time lurking on the board to see the basic steps it took to get there. It is slowly changing, as no one likes to support a loser, but it will be some time before the board culture turns away.
