I really liked mine. I got rid of it because I didn't have anywhere I could shoot it. I wish I had kept it.

mini 14s are for peopel who are too schizophrenic (formerly too poor) to own an AR-15.

Never bought one because of the proprietary mags otherwise it would've been an easy sale.

I don’t think it is at all
It’s cool, but that’s about it
It’s expensive and apparently the original ones were really inaccurate
I shot a Mini-30 once and it was really nice

    >Is the Ruger Mini 14 really as good as an AR-15
no. the mini 14 action is inherently less accurate and reliable. the mini 14 also has way worse optics mounting solutions and worse aftermarket in general.
    >is it enough to make a different
honestly probably not. unless a gun is extremely unreliable the difference between 2 semi auto rifles with some sort of modern optic is way less than the difference between a semi and a bolt or a semi with an optic and a semi with no optic. just make sure you get mags that work, get an optic and don't let shit get into the action

      >no. the mini 14 action is inherently less accurate and reliable.
Funnily enough, it's amazing at firing blank rounds, which are notorious for fouling up most semi-automatics. Propmakers love them.

idk if they are more or less ammo finicky than ARs, I can't speak to that part, someone else with more experience with them would need to say. The issues with the mini 14/garand design is the action is way more open than an AR so you are more likely to get shit in it. It was an issue with the garand and m14. the other issue is aren't the oem mags expensive and the cheaper mags are hit and miss in terms of working reliably? vs an AR where you can just buy cheap as frick gaypul mags which work great

  6. 2 weeks ago

decades ago it would've been a cheaper alternative to an AR-15 since it uses as many cast parts as possible, which is what Ruger is still good at.
nowadays it's more expensive than a good AR and only really a nostalgia purchase or for ban states.

Its shit. If you want something that style, get a SCR, they take ar mags and you can use any ar upper you want, you can even put 870/1100 wood furniture on it if you want SOVL. Or like, you know, just buy a frickin ar like a normal person

  8. 2 weeks ago

No. Modularity alone the AR platform shits on the mini. It got a bad wrap for a while based on the early production issues with the barrels making them inaccurate but they resolved the issue for the most part. Still it’s just an inferior design that fires the same round so I don’t see the point. I like them but if you can’t have both…AR is the way to go and it’s not particularly close.

Most of the time, people don't want an AR-15, because they believe it is too powerful. In that case, just get an AR-10. They're five levels lower in power.

  11. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

no they are bad. aftermarket mags are all terrible, rock-in sucks worse than on AKs, stupidly over-gassed and cost about as much as a mid-tier AR

  12. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

The Mini-14 is an expensive semiauto 5.56 rifle with proprietary mags and a limited aftermarket, they also aren't as versatile or tacticool as an AR15, but make no mistake, they will kill a sumb***h dead just as well as an AR15 will.
The old models had pencil thin barrels that caused bullet drifting when heating up by Ruger has beefed up the barrels and accurized them a bit over the decades.

Not at all. While the Mini 14 is definitely a decent and functional rifle, it's not great.
Old Mini 14s have horrible accuracy and newer ones are still inherently less accurate than even budget PSA ARs due to the design.
The quality of its construction is ok but nothing to write home about. Some of the nicer Chinese SKSs unironically have better fit, finish, and machine work.
Magazines are very expensive and aftermarket ones are apparently not great. For me personally, rocking in the mags was difficult compared to other rock in guns like the AK and in general I think straight insert mags are better.
Aftermarket optic mounts aren't great. The iron sights are nice but are pretty much functionally identical to the ones you commonly see on ARs.

If SKSs were still cheap I would recommend those to ban state users over the Mini 14, though that is not so anymore. While Mini 14s have gotten cheaper and thus more competitive, AWB compliant ARs have caught up really fast, The SCR and ranch FM15 are much more practical and better made rifles, and at the same time have been getting cheaper and cheaper.

I really want a Mini-14, but only because I'm a CAgay and so owning an AR is complicated. One of my buddies does have a CA compliant AR and he always just swaps the lower out for a pistol grip one when we're at the range anyways so it's not exactly hard to get around these moronic rules, but I'd still rather just get a Mini-14. I own an M1 Carbine so I'm already fairly familiar with that style of action anyhow

No, it isn't, but it's like 95% as good as a stock midrange AR for the same price. It mostly flourished post-1990 by getting around weapons laws, and before that by being available to any random jerkoff who needed a combat rifle when the AR was expensive unobtanium made by a handful of companies. Now the only purpose it really serves is looking cool and not scaring old women quite as much.

You can find SL8 rifles for $1,200-$1,500

the SL8 was a 'nice' rifle maybe 20 years ago but nowadays pretty much any $700 or better AR is going to shoot as good and have more features. the SL8 can only use expensive 10rd mags, has a featureless bull barrel and the new ones don't even have the cool top rail anymore.

AR has better recoil control, better ergonomics, more ambidextrous operation, more enclosed operation without a large gap in the mechanism even when the bolt is in battery. The Mini isn't a bad gun, but the AR is better.

          Anonymous

I agree with your points. But I don't even put them in the same category as an AR. That's why I can like them both. They are apples to oranges. People think if you like a mini you're comparing to an AR and claiming it's "better". Some people just like mini 14s regardless of ARs... and some "AR guys" cannot mentally grasp this. Minis are definitely cooler though...

Exactly. I love both. I get that this thread WAS about comparing the two. But in general you must know what I mean. You can't even bring up a mini on its own without a certain type of computer commandos almost reacting insecure and start screeching like it's a threat or challenge to their AR, all while telling you how much it's not even close to a threat lol

I don’t own a mini and probably never will, however I have shot friends mini-14 with the folding stock and a full auto AC556 for hundreds of rounds. They are obviously worse at pretty much everything vs an AR, but they are really fun to shoot. Unfortunately this hobby is overrun with post 2020 gun owners who never got into it for the fun or sovl, everything is just min maxxed and schizo prepping.

      I don't doubt it. From https://tincanbandit.blogspot.com/2016/03/1022-facts.html
      >1964: March, gun writers are sent catalog proofs of the new 10/22, in June, Ruger begins print advertising the new rifle / gun released in Walnut
      >1980: The stock material is switched from WALNUT to BIRCH, butt plate now made of plastic
      >2008: Five Millionth 10/22 manufactured, Trigger housings switched to plastic, extended mag release added, stock material switched to MAPLE, Ruger Rimfire Challenge is started, finish on the receivers changed to a rough texture.
They may also have swapped to Beech at some point? Who knows. But assuming Ruger uses the same wood for both guns, they probably swapped wood on the Mini as well at roughly the same time. Yeah it looks shittier probably. It's the worst part of modern wood stocks. They often just look "meh".

Small tangent: I really wish there was a better "10/22 revisions" chart considering it's such a common gun. All I can find is moron boomers on forums (like NY Ruger) who claims his stock was "totally pressboard and yours is too and I can't find that stock which I probably threw on the fire years back" (I would love to know morons like this to give me free stocks in exchange for firewood). Funny enough TinCanBandit chimes in with real info which is where I get all my 10/22 info from; he knows a stupid amount about them compared to the guessing and hemming and hawing you get on forums and every other search result I can find.
