Stealth is a relative term, but to be fair canards are not “considered” a stealth feature as it reduces any “stealth” capability and increases the RCS even when it’s at a flat plane and you are “looking” at the aircraft head on with radar, the canards detract from its “stealth”.
For this I think you've gotta think like a chink. And what do they want more than anything else from a geopolitical standpoint? Taiwan.
My speculation is that it's "stealth enough" to get close to the Taiwanese coast to bukkake a good number of cruise missiles to hit sea and land defenses, kick up the afterburners, then run like a sonofab***h before they get intercepted, all to clear a path for landing troops and establishing a beachhead.
I doubt they were ever intended to go toe-to-toe with an F-22, F-35, or even some late-model versions of the F-15, F-16, or F/A-18 Super Hornet. I think the whole point of its design was avoiding those sorts of fights, since the AWACS, and the sheer amount of air defenses that would be pointed in their direction, would mean that getting spotted too soon = guaranteed death.
They have bombers to spam cruise missiles with. More likely the J-20 is a stealthy missile truck for SEAD and taking out whatever 4th gen aircraft Taiwan is able to send up. Then the less sneaky stuff will be able to come in and strike targets with impunity.
I think it’s extremely limited in the type of air to ground ordnance it can use. Can you use an AR chambered in 5.56 in a dmr rold? Technically yes, but it’s not as effective in that role. Same logic applies here. J20 was built almost entirely as an AWACS hunter and technically an air superiority fighter. It can do some ground attacks but it’s capabilities aren’t well suited for ground attack so it will rarely be used in that manner.
>an AWACS hunter
Thank god someone else actually sees this. China is banking on AWAS supression.
Its a shame the US Mil decided to decentralize AWACS via the F-35.
>My speculation is that it's "stealth enough" to get close to the Taiwanese coast to bukkake a good number of cruise missiles to hit sea and land defenses, kick up the afterburners, then run like a sonofab***h before they get intercepted
you know Taiwan is 100km off the Chinese coast and they have surface based missiles with ranges greater than that, right? Hell, they have rocket artillery with >200km range.
Yes, also a few design cues from the F-35, but i'm talking about the general shape.
They probably found out early on how to make it more stealthy although their limitations at the time.
Ofc nowadays we have no clue how Stealthy the J-20 really is, but i believe it's far better than whatever they found out at the time. I know that the newer units already use the WS-10, which theoretically are far more stealthier than the AL-41 from the first batches.
Honestly i can't wait to see it in action. Not in Taiwan though, like in Africa, bombing mudslimes in Philipines or whatever. Should be interesting to see how modern PLA operates in the 21st century.
>but i'm talking about the general shape.
that was straight up copied along with a ton of other shit from the mig 1.44.

I didn't know that the Mig 144 had DSI intakes? Or dihedral canards? Or LERX? Or have by EOTS?

The F-35 didn't invent Divertless Intakes (DSI) moron. And where in the Mig 144 design do you see dihedral canards or LERX?

Youre talking to an MIGA Amerishart. These are the people that can’t give credit to anything Chinese and thought Trump will ally with Russia and BTFO China epic style, it is what it is with boomers.

WS10A has nothing on the AL41F. WS15, however.. btw, there are large differences between ws10, ws10a, and ws10x.
It's a lot less detectable than anything 4th gen.
Its stealth features are significantly less capable than the F35 or F22.
How that plays out in practice we don't entirely know, but given that the notoriously alarmist MIC has basically said 'we don't consider it anything to particularly worry about' that's not a great sign.
Strictly speaking, there's no set definition for stealth. Certainly, the J-20 is low observable but I doubt it's got the stealth to get within shooting range without getting spotted.
This is going to blow your mind but not even the F117 was stealth. Nothing is stealth until we develop cloaking fields.
The only people that can actually answer this are not posting on /k/
Anything anyone here tells you is speculation at best.
Stealth enough to be considered stealth.
~0.05m^2. Better than -20dB less RCS than a comparable normal aircraft.
The only thing that really matters is detection range against F-35s and whether AIM-260 can lock it
And the vice versa, china is the only country remotely capable of resist against a F-35, against an Su-57 it would be end in a unilateral carnage.
>canard
As stealthy as Rafale.
another moron
>canard cannot be stealth
moron detected

J-20 is an air-superiority fighter. It has no anti-ground capabilities which includes SEAD.
Every source I've seen lists it as multirole. Also, F-22 is an air superiority fighter yet it still has air to ground capabilities.

moron. All Chinese doc said it's to go against the like of f22
J-20 being multirole is largely theoretical at this point. It still just uses air-to-air ordinance at this point.

there's no "stealth" or "not stealth", its about how stealthy it is
it has the RCS of an F16, so no
There is no stealth moron. If you can see it or if it gets pinged on radar, infrared etc IN ANY AMOUNT it is NOT STEALTH.
J-20 design is good enough that even Americans came up with a design with similarities to their F-35 so yeah, I'd say it's a stealth fighter indeed.
The F-35 existed before the J-20
I mean, they were already fricking with that design since the J-9 prototype, which is from the late 80's.
the j20 was developed from the mig 1.44 (which china bought),with features copied from the f35.

Didn't they also tested the WS-10G on it? With TVC and everything.
on the J-10C demonstrator at the Zhuhai airshow, correct.
Ah i found that they used the WS-10B on it, just as a prototype. The production ones uses the "C" variant.

Yes: https://youtu.be/E6BsAiY9Wk8?t=101
Why doesn't china donate some drones to Russia for testing
They don't want their tech be stolen by Americans so only those civilian versions are available for now.
it's made with f-22 data so yeah, probably.
Strictly speaking, there's no set definition for stealth. Certainly, the J-20 is low observable but I doubt it's got the stealth to get within shooting range without getting spotted.
