Gib a2 grip metal mag minimalist sling then perfection

      >a2 grip

This board is so lolnotraining. Ever handled your gun for more than 15 minutes? The a2 grip leaves a gap where the metal shreds the skin on your middle finger. ANY other grip is better as it makes it possible to get through a training without permanently fricking up your finger. My rifle courses were 8 fricking hours long, thank the gods my buddy had tape for me to wrap my finger in.

I stopped using that gun the second I got out. Huffing all that gas it shoots back directly where your nose is can't be good for you. Shitty designed gun.

Stoner reached into the platonic realm of forms and pulled out the AR-15. I don't mean that the original he produced was a perfect gun, I mean he happened to find a gunform that effectively filled a tool niche in the same way that causes all passenger airliners to look the same.

That would be the gun control act of 1968.

It's well known that the domestic manufacturers supported the ban to cut the importers off from the market, the true intent of the executive order was protectionism.

nah man my ar15 is comfy and accurate and very easy to shoot. Not only is it easy to shoot, its very easy to disassemble and clean and maintain the parts.
The only type of gun I would enjoy more than an AR15 would be an AUG for my own autistic reasons. Overall though, if you made me choose between a 2000 dollar AR or a 2000 dollar AK, I would choose the AR every time. The only bad part about the AR design is the buffer tube/castle nut system. If manufacturers could make bufferless AR's as cheap as the buffered AR's they would instantly be the best carbine in the world.

This is why the MCX platform is so popular. It tries to stay as true to the AR platform as possible while improving the design in every aspect. Even the SR15 has issues the MCX doesn't have.

You're now reminded that the US military would have ran AR-10s for 40+ years had the owner of Armalite not gone full autism and demanded an aluminum barrel.
I'll go so far to say we would have never stopped using .30 cal and this whole Sig MCX bullshittery would never have happened.

            A) I own 16in. 5.56 and 20in. .308 semi-autos
            B) Local range has 300 yard zone and some generous madman set up gong plates at 500
            C) Strelok Pro doesn't lie. 5.56 at 400yd ~460ftlb, .308 ~1700

A proper .30 cal and decades of stringent marksmanship requirements would have made US forces mutiples more effective in a theatre where it was just as common to have >300yd engagements as there were <100.

Again, and I've said this in numerous MCX threads, they went back to .30 cal (equivalent) because reality is inescapable.
1 strong placed shot is better than 5 weak hits.

mate I'm an AR10 enjoyer too but you're wrong. In a combined arms, fire and maneuver style army, carbines are king. We've known this since 1944. I'm not going to explain it to you as that's been done to death and back since before I was born, and I'm 30.

Am I the only one that hates AR’s charging handle system? It’s so awkward and basically requires you to bring your rifle all the way down to yank. And it’s just such an unnatural position to manipulate. If I didn’t hate AKs I would buy one just for the side charging.

you're not alone, it is awkward. But it's not awkward enough to be a real problem, and having one small hole on the rear of the receiver contributes better towards reliability than having a massive exposed slot on the side.

On one hand the AR-15 itself is a fairly decent gun. However, knowing that Eugene Stoner made far superior designs that the industry just ignores is infuriating.

              AR-10:
              >Built for 30-06, later 308.
              >It is amazing in large calibers, and beats out literally every battle rifle option on the market.
              >Armalite downsizes it 'cause they were asked to experiment with 5.56, and the 5.56 variant gets adopted despite the gun being built for higher calibers.
              >M14, an objectively garbage gun, is adopted instead of the AR-10.
              >Military later adopts the SR-25, which is just a precision AR-10 and the last project Eugene Stoner worked on before he fricking died.

              AR-18:
              >Built specifically to be cost effective.
              >Also engineered to retain the same quality as rifles 10x the cost.
              >Every modern gun nowadays copies at least one aspect of it.
              >US Military completely ignores it despite outperforming the 15 in every conceivable way.
              >Firearms industry completely ignores it despite the Irish proving that it was perfect for a militia role, something you'd expect 2A advocates to froth at the mouth for.

              Stoner 63:
              >Engineered to be modular to a fault.
              >Navy Seals were pissed when they had to swap their S63's for M249's, and the Seals that aren't pissed never fricking used both.
              >You can flip the damn thing upside-down and slap on some parts to turn it into a fricking LMG
              >With all the wacky shit we've managed to make the AR-15 do, imagine what the industry could make the S63 do.
              >Nobody even knows it exists despite it being the biggest goldmine to piss off the feds.

Eugene Stoner was the resurrected form of John Moses Browning, and we fricking spat in his face.

I have a long car ride ahead of me today, and it looks like I'll be reading up on the stoner 63 and the ar18. Thanks for the reminder/recommendation. And I will admit, Stoner 63 is an absolute gigachad name for a war machine.

You escape an ambush by putting more firepower on the enemy than they can put on you. High powered cartridges are prohibitively difficult to fire in full auto. 1 shot drops are nearly impossible to achieve when you're getting shot at. Intermediate cartridges will always have their place in war.

                Anonymous

Full power cartridges go the distance, intermediates do not. The thing a lot of you ARlarpers don't account for is that it can poke a hole in paper at some distance, but won't do much harm to a body.

I would argue it is the gun most responsible for innovations in furniture and accessory modular design.

I also like having a semi auto that can be readily converted to numerous calibers with just an upper swap.

      Anonymous

Not really, but no way would it be as popular if it weren't American. Being unaffected by import bans in the biggest civilian gun market and kinda easy to make sealed the deal.

Thing is, I don't even think it's all that good at being modular. A furniture swap is faster to do on an AK, just that many accessory makers insist on muh free flote handguards which they're weren't designed for.

Kind of. I love them, went through my AR phase. And if a pack of Black folk are outside my door an AR15 is the gun im grabbing. But im a utilitarian. 22s, pump shotguns, and bolt centerfires are my favorite.

At one time I had more AR15s than centerfire bolt hunting rifles...ARs are good but MUH LONG RANGE and AR15s and anything tacticool are all the majority of the industry are focused on anymore. And the AR15 started all that.

No you stupid idiot its the best thing. People now take guns seriously because of the AR15 platform. Now people dont waste time fricking around with arbitrary calibers and instead run drills and train with an AR like they should. The AR legitimized the gun platform and made everyone take guns seriously like you should. Guns arent meant for "fun" or any arbitrary metric like that, you're supposed to run drills and be cognizant of your groupings and your builds. I only wish we could have streamlined guns faster so that meme guns and meme calibers didnt have to exist.

      No.
the AWB and import bans together irreversibly raped not only the firearms industry of the US, but the entire world.
The AR-15's prevalence is merely a symptom, but still largely due to it's own merits as well.
Nevertheless, with actual competition and the introduction of new ideas and designs we'd probably have even better rifles for both civilian and military applications by now.

      >Eugene Stoner was the resurrected form of John Moses Browning, and we fricking spat in his face.
At least Stoner machine gun descendants are still going on, hopefully someday we'll actually take them seriously.

      >AR-10
Ordinance was dead set on the M14 design. Had the composite steel-aluminum barrel not been introduced with the test gun, at best they would drag their feet until they could find an excuse to drop it. Would've been a Hail Mary if it did.
      >AR-18
By the time that was introduced, we've figured out M16s and had a metric frickheap to hand out like candy. There was no way the first world was going to adopt it. America had the M16, which looked better, and Europe wanted their own designs, for national pride. Third world didn't even want it. Still, I would more than like for American gun companies to invest in the original AR-18 design, even if it has to be milled and with 90% of its parts coming from the AR-15, as long as it has the square receiver design.
      >Stoner 63
A neat concept, but way too complicated for its own good. The belt fed config was good enough, so much that knights is still keeping it alive with the LAMG. If the rifle and machine gun were separate, yet still have some parts commonality, maybe it could be better?

An honest to god shame, too. If it wasn't for the fricking M14, the industry as a whole would be using Stoner's best ideas.

From an industry standpoint, the AR15 is a great product. It is very cheap and relatively easy to produce. Which is one of the main issues with regards to product variety. When you can can produce ARs and Glock clones, why would you produce anything else? As a rifle, the AR is mediocre. The plattform is not very accurate inherently and the cartridge is meh. Its great for military use, but civillians do not benefit from it in the same way.
