In a way yes, Poland took the platform as far as it could go in modernization and ended up replacing it later.

In a way no as Russia (when not hampered by endless corruption aka never) has been able to somewhat modernize it (pic is gen2 Ak-12 I do believe).

As a soul gay I just like it boys.

      >Russia has been able to somewhat modernize it
It's airsoft furniture stuck onto an AK which doesn't solve any of the problems of the platform's outdated as frick design. If they want to stick to AK so bad they should just come up with a new milled aluminum receiver that integrates the optics rail like every other fricking modern gun.

      >Poland took the platform as far as it could go in modernization and ended up replacing it later.
This is a misrepresentation of what happened. The Beryl is a 1990’s design just like the Russian AK-100 series and the Bulgarian AR-M series. All of them are dated somewhat compared to 21st Century designs like the Galil ACE and AK-12 which incorporate even more modern upgrades like ambi controls and railz. Pooland dropped the Beryl in favor of the Grot because it’s in NATO now, and the AK is a symbol of Russia and the commie days.

        Anonymous

The Grot uses a lot more polymer and looks like it was supposed to be lighter than the Beryl.

        Anonymous

The beryl has three variants (four technically but the beryl D is basically just a hodgepodge of all beryls) and the C variant is as tacticool as you can make an AK.

Fcuking what? Thats like saying an M4 with an ARMS rail from 2003 is the end of the line for ARs. A modernized AK would have modern features integrated to its design, not just bolted on top.

The Swiss modernized the AK back in the 80s. Had one. Furniture was a little fragile by todays standards. Other than that, great trigger, solved the dust cover problem. Dirt ingress on the ejection port. A bunch of other shit I dont remember. Finns numba too on list. Great rifle. Still an AK though. If I could get one for 900 id but it. Id pay 1800 for a real SIG.

He means the SIG 550 / Stgw 90, it's a lot like an AK on the inside:

They could be modernised further IMO; What they're really really lacking is free-floated handguards. They're finely built guns but Swiss comp shooters choose AR-15s over SIG 550s every time because putting pressure on the 550 handguard changes the point of impact.

You're right, the STG 550 is what the AKV-521 is convergently evolving into.

      Wtf are you talking about?
The AK has several developments from within russia that appear to be very good, like the ak512, left side charging, bolt hold open, ambi controls and a split reciever.
Ofc they wont get adopted because russian corruption but still.

        Anonymous

I think once you go to such substantial changes like a split receiver, then you can't really call it an evolution of the AK anymore. It would be like calling the AK an evolution of the Garand.

          Anonymous

I disagree, bufferless ARs like the LR300 are still ARs, as are monolithic ARs and piston ARs. Guns are a ship of Theseus thing, as long as you can trace the heritage it doesn't really matter how many alterations or permutations they have.

Sorta. The dust cover doesn't make a good mounting point for optics and the 7.62x39mm is just too slow for most jobs. The barrel isn't lined up with the stock very well so the whole thing wants to flip. Add in the long stroke piston system means you've got a lot of recoil to manage and swapping to a faster round will make it worse.

This is not to say the AK can't be fixed but it's easier to revert to the M1 Garand and StG44 and move forwards from there than it is to improve the AK.

After tuning the gas system the sheer weight of the rifle soaks up whatever recoil is left and an AK in 5.56 or 5.45 can be a feathery soft-recoiling gun. The .308s are obviously going to kick more but they don't seem uncompetitive at all. youtube.com/watch?v=-afnJkwppdo

There are a lot of guys on the files that haven't been able to reproduce Rob's results (1 MOA) with the M77, even with lead sleds and bags. There is a good chance there is a shitload of variance in the guns.

Bob Sled is a trained sniper so I’d expect his results to be better than the average person’s.

                Anonymous

Not debating that. The point is that if people can't get good results even when mounting the gun to a fixed position and using ammo that costs $2.5 a shot, it doesn't matter if Bobert Snowboard can do it from from shooting sticks. We live in a world where tactical timmy can casually get 1 moa from a PSAR loaded with AAC using his mag as a monopod: if you can't even do half as good as that with the M77, especially running 308, it's probably too finnicky of a platform.

                Anonymous

I'll acknowledge that there are lots of variances in factory-built AKs, but I doubt those M77s owned by random arfcom and akfiles gays were free-floated.

The chassis he tried to use is brand new and a knockoff of another product, and he's trying to say it supports his argument that the AK is hard to modernise. All it proves is that he's susceptible to wasting money on shiny and new instead of tried and tested.

        Anonymous

what he said is that you're paying a lot more money for something that is worse than a generic AR out of the box.

          Anonymous

I mean generally he's right but hes only right from the specifications of his own (mostly imaginary) mission needs, and between the choices of modifications he made. Ofc an AR is the best rifle to own in the mainland states of the US, doesn't mean that the platform doesn't hold a lot of merit of its own even after 80 years of service

          Anonymous

If every AR off the shelf came in the 1990’s M4 configuration, then it would be a fair comparison. Most AR gays are buying rifles that come with m-lok handguards installed from the factory vs AKs that are much more limited in options due to import restrictions.

  10. 1 month ago

More or less. The future is monolithic short stroke gas piston rifles. Embrace it. AKs are just for contrarians who like to larp as drunk eastern europeans.

The Vuk might save the platform but thats the same as all the new monolithic guns except its long stroke.

      Anonymous

The vuk is not an ak you moron, how tf is it going to "save the platform" when it has nothing at all in common with an AKM short of a long stroke piston.

        Anonymous

The only thing worth carrying over is the long stroke piston. The fcg is trash. The receiver is trash. The mags are trash. Any proper modernization of the AK was going to have to throw that shit out and replace it with something better while trying to keep the vibe. If you don't do that you end up with shit like the AK12. I'd rather have a good rifle that is AK-like than a shit rifle that gets the moron purists like you hard.

arguably all firearms are at an evolutionary dead end. modern manufacturing techniques favored aluminium extruded receivers, short stroke gas piston rotating bolt designs. even with yet unexplored additive manufacturing techniques, the fundamentals of feeding, locking, striking, unlocking, extracting and ejecting have been conceptually so refined that without a fundamental paradigm shift we will be stuck with the MCX for quite a while

  21. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

No. I think it has definitely been improperly future-proofed, but there's nothing really wrong with it that cant be fixed. The Galil ACE is a decent modernization, and that AK prototype that opened up like an FAL is what I think is the best path forward, but the future is what you make of it. Will one-piece hinged receivers become widespread, or will they continue putting new handguards and stocks on old designs? That is what will decide the future of the AK. FWIW, I think a lot of the issues with the AK are irrelevant in a military context, it will probably become unpopular as a civilian rifle but militaries are going to keep buying AKs regardless of muh MOA and muh dust cover.

      >clunky
The problem is that he's stuck with US made parts because zenitco is stupidly expensive and hard to get. He chose not to opt for a railed top cover because they wouldn't return to zero. Not an issue with the B33. He is right about the PT-1 style stocks though, they're just not comfortable. Lastly he built a full sized 7.62 gun. 12.5 would have been a much better choice. Negligible difference in terminal effect and much handier. With a full length the leader kit lets you put the lam low enough so you don't need to raise the optic, but it's front heavy as frick.
In conclusion they look sick but you really do pay premium AR money for a subpar AR substitute.

        >but money!
For all the ak funkopops he bought like the MI hand guard, rs regulate side rail upper + lower, reddit piston, buying a magpul stock...to replace the magpul stock (kek), he could have just had a good chassis from the get go.

            Anonymous

Are you dense? I'm saying he did a bunch of shit with his AK that would have been easier and cheaper if he just got a chassis that literally installs with a screw driver. His attitude was 'MI is justasgood' then went down a rabbit hole of spending good money after bad.

People spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to side grade their AR's for name brand consumerslop, yet get butthurt when there are ak accessories that cost as much as or less than their funkopop KAC RAS or QD cups yet add way more functionality.

If you buy a basic b***h WASR RH-10 and put on a Sureshot 2.1, you have a free floated gun with a CHFCL barrel for about a grand into the gun: at that point, you're approaching the same money as an AR with the same specs (and no, nitrided button rifled barrels and delta ring handguards don't count).

I know that's a sureshot. I was talking about Hop's build. You make a good point that he's a moron for not getting the chassis because his argument was
          >money
          >makes the gun too different (???)
yet spends more money, time, and effort trying to do it a different and ultimately way. The rails and mounts he bought specifically are all worse than zenitco's offerings. My point was that it could have been better if you could get that shit without getting assraped on price.

Can you elaborate on this? Zenitco shit seems clunky and unrefined, plus even people who fanboy it agree its heavy af. What do they do that an American equivalent doesnt?

Stay out of the gun's path of ejection, critically.

It isn't though. The lower receiver has the same dimensions and allegedly the trigger groups are interchangeable, but other than that there is very little parts commonality. The bolts aren't interchangeable and the barrel profile and gas system are entirely new (new gas port angle, so its not even off a 105 though theyre similar). I don't disagree that its very similar to the AK74, but to say that its just a new handguard on a 74M is desperate cope. They had to make new tooling for most of it, and the current gen 3 ones have enough unique machining in the lower that even that is probably new.

So it's a worse AK-74 then. All the expense of tooling up for a new rifle that doesn't do anything the 74 couldn't do with an added chassis or with a new front trunnion to attach a new handguard and top cover to.

Yes and the Muhreens bought HK416s that do the exact same thing an M16 with a quadrail could do. A lot of times these procurements are just to replace aging equipment and not necessarily because the new thing is leaps and bounds ahead of the old thing.

In hand it's pretty refined and definitely not as heavy as it seems. Weight is unavoidable though just due to the nature of the AK, and I do concede some of their shit like the god awful brakes are stupidly oversized. As

Is the Galil ACE Gen II not modern enough? It's railed up top, has MLOK space around the handguard, a thumb-actuated fire selector, and the charging handle is on the left side.

99% of firearms are at their "evolutionary dead end" where they are designs that have only been incrementally iterated upon for the last 60+ years. So much so that the evolutionary divergence is beginning to reach 0 with all of the iterations converging into a shared set of features. The only novel differences between them being, again, mechanisms of action that came about half a century ago or more.

AR could take a big leap forward if everybody would share their patents. KAC's rounded lugs (redesigned by Eugene Stoner) and sand channel carrier cuts, LMT's redesigned gas flow geometry and cam path, Surefire's floating weight and open-bolt full-auto (additions from Jim Sullivan), LWRC's extractor cut and one-piece gas key, POF's roller cam pin and ambi receiver features, KE Arms' monolithic polymer lowers, LMT's monolithic machined uppers, anybody's cassette trigger and captive buffer, and while I'm fantasising let's just throw on a bore extractor too. The US gov should steal all of these patents and put them in the M16A5 then print money to pay off the court fees.

larpers hate that they cant use their heckin folderino stocks with it, and it does add a decent amount of weight vs simply having a railed dust cover, which leads me to my final point: purists say a railed dust cover loses zero (unverified) but see no issue with needing to fully remove a side mounted optic for maintenance. ironic? idk, maybe.

A solid block of steel welded/riveted to the side of the receiver vs a hinged cover on a weapon known for massive tolerance differences between countries and even individual rifles. And it has to open regularly while a side rail optic doesn't need to be removed for disassembly.

Yes, as evidenced by even Russia moving to a split receiver design.

It's not hard to imagine why a rifle which is essentially one contiguous component from trunnion to stock, and with a massive no-mount area the entire fricking length of the receiver necessitating the use of L-mounts, is only finding favor among people with no opportunity to prove anything.

They hit the same plateau as the AR platform.
The difference being is that the AR is more of a lego gun compared to the AK.

A common in use platform that would fit the bill of evolutionary dead would be the Mp5 and it's larger caliber counterparts.

What I would like to see are titanium or aluminum AK's.

What's actually stopping anybody from fitting steel trunnions into machined aluminium receivers? They won't be using 100% standard trunnions but I don't see why it's not possible with a little engineering.

        Anonymous

Galvanic corrosion. AK receivers also flex a lot during operation: not a big deal for steel as it effectively has an infinite fatigue life as long as stress is low enough. Aluminum has a fixed fatigue limit no matter what you do: having all the force concentrated on like 12 rivet holes is just going to exacerbate it.

Russia is still using the AK while America is replacing the M4 so you tell me. Really the biggest problem with the AK is its weight, which is why we’re starting to see steel+alloy/polymer hybrid rifles like the IWI Galil ACE and I believe the Zastava M17.

Cope. Like it or not, the Spear is here to stay and the M4s days are numbered, and Russia is buying AK12s in at least sufficient quantity that even mobiks are getting them. If they can buy that, they can buy a whole new rifle.

The "AK-12" is just an AK-74 with new furniture because using existing tooling brings the cost down to something they can afford. That they barely modified the design in the end proves that they can't afford to.

This is true only to the extent that any gun can kill a man. You can apply that logic to a .22lr pistol, or a single shot shotgun. Technology has improved a lot and it's a worthy exercise to try and push a platform to its limit to utilize the available tech that the men in question will likely have and use against you in muh boog.

By what measure? While none of the RKs parts are directly compatible with an AK, internally and in terms of controls its an entirely pedestrian AK. Galils built upon them with AR selectors and modern offerings like the Zlobin AK12, Galil Ace and the AKV-521 prototype are all dramatic iterations upon the AK.
