Is picrel a good carry weapon?

I’m looking for my first pistol & CCW and have shot a couple, including a Sig P365XL. I didn’t shoot well with the Glock for whatever reason. How are the reliability and quality control of these? For a life or death gun, I want to make sure it goes bang but also be able to hit what I need to

Also, holster & light recommendations if this gun passes the /k/onsensus

Yes. I had one XL, sold it to buy an optic, and then missed it enough to have just bought a second this week.

For what it's worth, the XL is generally reputed to be slightly more reliable than the smaller version. I'm not sure if that's been seriously tested, but IIRC the XL uses a different recoil spring. And smaller guns are just generally harder to make run reliable. More dwell time on the longer slide I guess? And while the original P365 did have major issues at launch, my understanding is the XL models never really ran into issues.

I think it's a great first carry gun, especially the XL. You have room to add a light, optic, or experiment with the smaller grip frame. Good quality holsters are out there. And the extra length over the smaller model will help it conceal better at appendix.

SoyZ isn't even relevant to this conversation.

p365, hellcat, max9, shield, etc. are basically all the same gun at this point with slightly different grips/triggers/sights. everyone copied sig when they re-learned the ancient magic of geometry to fit double-stack capacity in a single-stack frame. you'll be fine with all of the above, they're all reliable.

Oh yeah bro? You've tested them all? You've compared their internals? Don't talk out of your ass just based on a few youtube reviews you watched.

All the sig rifles and pistols as of late have seen QC issues; I encounter people sending them in for service at the LGS plus people at my shooting range constantly having issues with them. Skip it and get the tiny Glock or shield if you want something small but reliable. No point in carrying something to save your life if it might not go bang when you really need it to.

This is why you test firearms thoroughly for function with your carry ammo before carrying them. I'm also pretty skeptical that people are regularly sending them in for service at your LGS, you can usually go directly through the manufacturer. That said, lately it does seem to be a bad idea to buy brand new Sig products at launch.

        >And the extra length over the smaller model will help it conceal better at appendix.
Can you elaborate on this? Is it because it pushes out the pants for longer or something, thereby breaking up the shape of a gun? Rly helpful answer btw thanks anon

i think he just means you get the benefits of the longer barrel with the concealability of the smaller frame, since the grip is usually what ends up printing.

Basically it works similar to a boat's keel. In a semi auto pistol most of the weight is going to be in the grip where the metal magazine and rounds are stored. Your belt is going to apply pressure to the gun in one direction, pushing the grip in, and that's going to cause the grip to tip out over your belt.

People mitigate this in one of two ways.

One, pic related, is a wedge, which pushes the muzzle out from your body, and thus the grip back inward.

The other option is to make the holster longer. This allows more of your body to be leveraged against the gun and gives it less room to tilt out. I also find it more comfortable, because the same amount of pressure from your gun and belt is spread out across a broader surface area on your body. It's the same reason it hurts so much to step on a small lego but a bigger object not so much.

These videos break them down better than I probably could.

One other thing I should probably mention, you really want a good stiff carry belt. For appendix, you don't want it crazy stiff though. I recommend Blue Alpha Gear, Kore, or Mastermind Tactics. My favorite is the Mastermind specialist belt. I recommend against Cobra buckles, they add extra bulk without offering much besides quick unbuckling.

Well anon, if I do get the XL I’ll just buy the P365 frame too so I can swap at ease. That’s a thing isn’t it?

Yes, you can do this. The P365s all use a serialized chassis with interchangeable frames.

*pressure pushing the muzzle in, I should say in that first bit.

I will also say that not everybody prefers this, and what length you ultimately prefer can be subjective. There is definitely such a thing as too long, but IMO a bit more than the gun natively has is great.

          (fantastic post)

I just bought a M&P Shield M2.0 subcompact 3.1" barrel and I have to add a solid inch of padding to my appendix holster to keep it from tilting the wrong way. If I had known I would have gotten the 4" but whatever I'll be fine. I wish there was a way to trade it for the 4" tho

Hey man, you can still get the same benefits from using a longer holster. Plus, if you have it optics ready or ever get an optic cut, the shorter slide won't matter much because your sight radius becomes irrelevant. Plus you get the shorter grip option.

A guy just recently made USPSA GM using a Glock 26, it's a very capable form factor.

I used to own a 2.0 and they're great guns, I only sold mine because at the time I wanted to start carrying with an RDS and Smith didn't offer an OR model yet.

This is my EDC at the moment. It's great for what it is, which is a microcompact, but if you can carry something larger, I would suggest that instead (Glock 19, P320 XCompact, CZ P10C, VP9, PDP Compact). QC hasn't really been much of an issue with the P365 line after the initial release.

Forgot to add, for holsters, I can personally highly recommend JM Custom Kydex and Tenicor. If you get an AIWB holster I recommend avoiding the Tenicor Velo or anything with a hard wedge, and try a foam wedge instead. You may eventually find you prefer a hard wedge but if you don't like it, you really really won't like it.

I also just bought a Darkstar Gear AIWB holster, which comes highly recommended by people I trust, but no firsthand experience yet.

Phlster is a brand with some really good info for beginners in their marketing, and a really good product called the Enigma for carrying without a belt if that's something you care about. That said, I do not recommend their holsters based on my experience. They are well made but overpriced for what they are, and they're generally bulkier in places than they need to be to simplify production. Still, they have some really great info on their social media.

In general, try to stick to holsters that are made by reputable brands. Try to stick with spring steel clips, avoid plastic and especially kydex clips (Kydex is great for a holster body but too soft for clips). I am a huge fan of Discreet Carry Concepts (DCC) clips, which you will typically find offered as an option for the higher end holsters.

Don't be scared of holsters that are slightly longer than your gun, like the ones Darkstar Gear offers. The extra length can actually make the gun more comfortable and conceal better AIWB, because it acts as a keel keeping your grip from tipping out and your muzzle from tipping into your groin. It sounds weird but it really works.

As for lights, you only have 2 really serious options now, the Surefire XSC and the Streamlight TLR-7 Sub. I don't really have experience with either, but both are reputable brands who make very reliable products. I have owned both SF and Streamlight lights and had good experiences with both. (cont)

I will give 2 warnings about WMLs though.
      1. You may find it harder to find a quality holster for your gun and light of choice. This gets even harder if you try to mess around with nonstandard rails and lights for full size guns like that other anon suggested- these are really niche configurations and few quality holster makers are going to offer them.
      2. Regardless of whether you carry a WML, you absolutely MUST have a bright handheld flashlight. This is non-negotiable IMO. In the dark, you should never be searching around with your WML. You never want to point your gun at non-threats. I'm pretty lazy about carrying big lights, so I usually carry a Streamlight Microstream, which is very small and pretty cheap, about $40 when I bought one. Very bright. Get the FDE model over the black one of you choose to buy one. I also keep a Nitecore TIP SE on my keychain- it's not as practical as the Streamlight but it gives me an option if I misplace the SL and it's impossible for me to leave the house without it.

That said, if you can afford a quality WML AND a quality handheld, and you are comfortable enough carrying it, go for it 100%, they are a huge benefit and in some situations may deter would-be attackers before the threat even materializes.

As for red dot sights, the most durable options for P365 sized guns right now are the Holosun 507k/407k and the Trijicon RMRcc. I can personally recommend the Holosun 407k. Holosun also has a new closed emitter model called the EPS Carry coming out soon which should be pretty rugged.

Just bear in mind if you buy an RDS that you will really need to train your draw and presentation regularly, it needs to be muscle memory so you don't find yourself fishing for the dot. Some people recommend against them for beginners but I disagree 100%, as long as you're serious about training.

One other warning, be careful about products you see promoted or recommended by YouTube gun channels. They're pretty much all shills for some brand or other, and I've personally been burned buying shitty low quality hosters, lights etc based on their advice when I was new to this stuff.

Frankly, /k/ is also a completely dogshit place to get info. Nobody here fricking shoots, half of the board right now is dumb frick Europeans who came for the Ukraine war.

I recommend looking at places like Pistol-Forum & Primary & Secondary for some more serious info. I will say some of the folks at Primary & Secondary are kind of larpy and insist anything smaller than a G34 carried everyday will get you kilt in the streets, don't listen to those morons.

          One last thing OP.

Do not buy your gun at a local store unless they gave you a kidney or some shit. You will usually overpay.

Look up the gun using a site called gun.deals. Best way is usually to google the gun and gun.deals, usually a phrase like "P365XL gun.deals". This is a price aggregator that will show you the best prices online. Right now Sig are being homosexuals about enforcing MAP pricing on their guns so expect to pay about $600 before shipping/transfer for an XL model.

I would avoid buying a used P365, just because they did have some issues at launch and you don't really have any way to tell how old what you're getting is.

I'll add that the long version that JM offers is a must for short barrel pistols. I have one for my g42 and it allows the gun to ride high enough for a good master grip without giving it the keel effect which makes the gun feel as if it is going to flop over the belt.

the "problem" that a p365 had was that it's design required the firing pin to drag a bit on the primer, probably during ejection.
People complained that this was causing broken firing pins (it wasnt, it was due to shitty india sourced parts)
but they complained so hard that sig redesigned the firing pin to impact at a slight angle, so the drag is less noticeable. Its literally still there but that was enough to get the autists to stop complaining lmao.

A buddy of mine got some of those for his XL and I watched him try them out, they couldn't cycle through a single mag without malfunctioning.

Good mags are fricking hard to design. I'm assuming Sig's engineers are pushing these mags to the very edge of reliability to get 12 in such a small package. I don't trust a small company with a much smaller R&D budget that didn't design the gun to figure out getting more in there reliably. And honestly, 12rd in such a small package is already a lot. More ammo is always better but I don't think it's worth complicating the equation on these guns that are already cutting edge as small handguns go, especially considering what they give you from the start.

Woah how do you have your rear sights on with an optic?

This is the newest version of the P365xl. No "L" in the etching, Separate notch for rear sight. True co-witness sights (though it doesn't come with those AmeriGlos). This improved version is what made me buy one. Love it.

Partially true. The standard Sig Xray sights do NOT cowitness, which is fricking gay.

The standalone Spectre Comp slide comes with the tall xray sights, which imo are too tall.

The Ameriglos I got give the perfect balance of usable cowitness without obstructing too much of the glass.

Mine came with Sig suppressor height sights. Glad they didn't put the shit standard ones on mine. These co-witness great. Romeo one came off without a thought (Holosun 507k all the way).

Shit, I just ordered one, hope it's this new version but it probably isn't.

Fricking hate that sig makes these iterative changes without announcing new generations.

Legit can’t get the 12th round in mine. Only with one mag though, can get all 12 in the other 3 perfectly fine, no issue at all.

I hate subcompacts and haven't really been big on Sig since the 226 was their big flagship. I don't dunk my guns in fudge sundae sauce and huck it against trees. I am good for a minimum of 4,000 rounds through my carry gun in a year and a few practical courses with it. I carry a P365XL damn near every day. You can do much worse.

how many times have your replaced the recoil spring? I know it's a XL but the normal 365 is like every 1.5k rounds

I think they're pretty overrated. You've got roughly the same height/length footprint as a glock 19 or beretta PX4 with less capacity in a thinner gun. I don't want a thin gun, I just don't like how they feel in my hand. I don't care how thin my gun is because I wear an apron at work and don't care if someone sees me printing outside of work. I think it's a great gun for the autist who hyperfixates on whether or not the people in the grocery store are looking at their belt line. I also hate the nusig grip angle. It's not conducive for recoil control

Actually concealing your gun instead of printing can help you avoid some pretty shittu experiences.

rented one at the range last weekend. had 1 light primer strike every magazine, their ammo. i'll just stick with my glock 26, never had an issue with it in all my years of ownership. i know rental guns really get beat up but it isnt even 5 years old yet.
