Wait, Euros don't seriously think AIM-260 is vaporware that won't happen, do they? They don't seriously think the US wouldn't make their own frick-off long-range AAM, do they? Surely, they don't think the missile in initial production, last I heard, is going to be cancelled?

I know Euros are prone to cope when it comes to their own kit vs the Burgers', but this is just too much, if true.

It’s slated to enter service sometime in 2024 so no it’s not cancelled. An all around better missile than the meteor as well

Euro here. AIM-260 is coming, unless someone has any news for me, exact brochure specifications are as yet unclear. It will be as good if not better than Meteor in most scenarios but Meteor's variable-thrust will possibly enable it to outperform AIM-260 in certain scenarios.
But I'm still going to simp for Meteor for the time being because its operationally deployed now and has been for several years, unlike AIM-260 which is yet to enter service.

Personally I welcome an American long range missile, that means there's competition and we're pushed to make something better.

American here, glad we have euro homies. The competition leads to better ideas, but the partnerships allow trade and cooperation should s ever htf. I have no doubt we could buy and equip meteors if we needed to, but we are gonna try to surpass it.

                Anonymous

Yeah, I'm not gonna complain that the USAF is getting a new, more capable missile. We are allies afterall and its in my interests for the Americans to be strong in the air. If we're lucky ,and my gubermint isn't acting moronic (doubtful), we may even get to buy the AIM-260 for ourselves.

America is the only country able to spend billions on R&D of individual components. The F-35's AN/APG-81 alone had $900 million USD in R&D money in it during the JSF development. No other country on earth can afford that, nor can they afford to mass produce it, with better quality than the DEMVAL radar. That's why the bongs team up with the US. Why not swallow some of that ill-gotten pride and team up with the US to have the best components shekels can buy?

                >No other country on earth can afford that, nor can they afford to mass produce it
What's wrong with the RBE2 radar for the F4 standard, except size.

                Anonymous

It's a small PESA that isn't LPI. The AN/APG-81 is in a whole other ballpark. The AN/APG-81 is literally the most sophisticated radar fielded on a fighter or attack platform.

One of the main advantages of the Meteor is its variable-thrust motor, ie, it can control thrust like how a normal aircraft can. An Aim-120 has a solid fuel motor, one tank with slower-burning grains and the other with faster-burning ie two-stage. A Meteor can control its thrust for maximum NEZ (No-Escape Zone) range vs a given target.
