leftovers are eaten the next day, not 5 days later for a reason

      Anonymous

I eat leftovers for at least 7 days, as long as it's sloppa or soup.

Depending on the food leftovers are good for 4-7 days.

If leftovers are appropriately stored e.g. canned, tinned, vacuum packed etc it can last for years.

It's 2 to 5 day old food, reheated in the microwave in a plastic chemical leeching container, and the final result often is completely ruined texture and flavor. Reheated meats warmed in the microwave always taste funky. The only viable options are things like stews, soups, lasagna, saucy pasta dishes, etc. I'd probably want to leap off a tall building if I had to eat dry re-warmed chicken breast with unseasoned broccoli and rice like half of these idiots make.

Canning however is awesome, but the initial cost and prep time makes it far less common. Doesn't require refrigeration and doesn't tend to taste weird when reheated. Think I'll crack open a jar of vegetable beef soup, or maybe a jar of bbq pulled pork and eat it with some crackers.

I wonder if you can do canning with an instant pot. They're pressure cookers, right?

        Anonymous

Forget canning, just freeze the ingredients for a meal and dump them into the instant pot when it's time to cook. Fricker will cook meat from raw frozen to done like it was nothing.

          Anonymous

Yeah, that's always a good idea, but you can't throw 5 jars of canned meals in your car and have work lunches and backup snacks for a week. Also good for power outages and natural disasters. Plus you don't have to cook, you could just heat it up or eat it room temp. Hell, throw one on the dash of your car and come out and get it at lunch time and it's nice and warm.

Damn, I've really sold myself on this whole canning thing. I need to buy a pressure cooker and some bell jars.

Jesus christ it takes a minute or two to load a dishwasher after each meal. If you have good detergent the dirty plates can sit there for days. Who the frick meal preps to save time on washing dishes? It's about portion control for fat fricks.

if you live alone, this isn't a practical solution
so if you're cooking every day, like you suggest
              >run the dishwasher every day just so you can reuse cookware
              or
              >wash up everything by hand so you can use it, bringing us back to where we started
not to mention the litany of things you can't put in the dishwasher - non-stick cookware, rice cooker insert, etc

People, people, what if neither position is wrong?
Some prefer a freshly cooked meal and spend their time on that
Some prefer to save time on meals and spend it on other things
              Neither are wrong

              this is a fair point

From what I can tell, meal prep is more about portion control and dieting than it is about time management. Anyone can whip up a quick meal or order takeout. Meal prep allows you to make portioned meals at your desired calorie level. If you're trying to lose weight, it's harder to overeat when you have food preportioned

Is this bait? So you're telling me to my face that cooking all my work lunches on Sunday when I'm at my house all day with free tune, so I just have to take it out of the fridge in the following mornings, is just as efficient as cooking say, a meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and gravy? It takes about the same time to cook a meal for 1 as it does a meal for 5. If it's a food that is just fine as leftovers then it makes no sense to cook it 5 times.

And some foods make more sense to cook a lot more at once. Who the frick makes only enough soup for one person? Why not go ahead and portion it into sealable bowls so you can just pull them out and reheat later?

I'm pretty sure he means like cooking steak, then potatoes, then another side, and then keeping them seperate. That way you can mix and match between different dinners, like if you'd made pasta some other day you could warm up the steak, cut it up and eat it with pasta or something

You can individually cook ingredients but that leads to more dishes having the same ingredients. I like to prep a variety of cuisines, one simple meat and three, Mexican, Italian, Asian, Indian, etc. Batch roasting some peppers and onions would be fine but the more variety you have typically means more ingredients and different preparation methods.

  17. 2 years ago

If you live alone and work full time and don't have your mom cooking for you: yes, very much.

You spend a couple hours at most cooking two meals each portioned for 5-7 people, and that gets you enough full meals to last nearly two weeks. You want to do two meals at once so you can alternate throughout that time instead of eating the same thing every day.

This means you come home from work and if you're too tired to cook you don't have to.

  18. 2 years ago

You can tell their logic they don't live alone, probably have a parent still cooking them meals, come here because they cook in their spare time and are so proud of themselves for not just microwaving shit.

But the reality is that if you're an adult, living on your own or maybe just with one person, you work at least 30 hours a week, then cooking something good twice a day 7 days a week is not something you can afford the time and energy to.

Cooking for 5 takes just as long as cooking the same dish for 1. So cook two dishes for 5, portion it off, alternate the two meals each day, and cook something fresher only when you feel up to it or have time. Or take these prepped meals to work so you're not buying fast food on your lunch break.

Additionally, prepping ingredients. You're not going to use a whole onion in one sitting. Cut enough for a larger meal, store what you don't use, and you can make the same stir fry quickly multiple times that week.

This is basic shit but this thread is full of idiots who think that because something is trendy that means it's bad and you're weak for doing it. But people did this before it was trendy and will do it after. It's just what you do.

It has always been called meal prepping. Leftovers are food you made that happen to have left over portions worth saving for later.

Prepping means preparing ingredients to use in cooking later (like chopping vegetables). Meal prep is preparing a whole finished meals to be eaten later but cooking in bulk. It's just what the fricking words mean. It's not some new hipster invention.

I knew a guy in college (11 years ago) who did meal prep and called it that. He was from a farm in the middle of nowhere missouri. Just because you only recently learned the term doesn't mean it's a trendy hipster thing.

If anything it's closer to just a poverty thing and people are poorer these days.

I was going to say that it takes so little time to peel and slice an onion that this must be bait, but then I remembered that some people really can't figure out that part of cooking, so it actually is a big time sink for them and those are the people who usually find "meal prepping" to be a genius idea and don't understand when others scoff at it

I have personally found that anything past 3 days old usually tastes like garbage personally. What I will usually do is make a big meal and portion it in a way where I don't have to throw anything out past 3 days and just pair it with sides (veggies, salad, etc).

  30. 2 years ago

Depends on how you go about it. Cooking 3-5 meals worth of food is essential to eating homecooked instead of goyslop when working full time and hitting the gym 3 nights a week. Cooking 10 meals worth of brown rice, plain green beans, and chicken breast on Sunday is setting yourself up for food waste and unplanned cheat meals. Cooking for one is difficult anyway, so you may as well overshoot and get some brownbag lunches and a heat and eat dinner in your fridge.

I don't understand Meal Prepping IF you're not going out on a trip, work a job away from home, want to feed your kids actual food instead of cafeteria slop, and stuff like that

Surely, everyone has time in their day to cook up a half-way decent meal right?

      Anonymous

Not everyone no, especially with really tiring jobs some people just don't have the energy at the end of every day, so why no prepare for that so you're not falling back on other quick food options that are less healthy? Also for lunches. Most people are doing these so they have something to take to work that's relatively fresh and healthier than other options available at work.

But when people post what you're saying I'm skeptical, have you ever had a full time job?

It's not so much the energy to cook as it is the energy to go to the god damn grocery store every single day or even every other day. I can't be assed to go to the grocery store more than once a week.

any way you swing it its a fricking moronic shitty idea that takes way too much time (literally more than if you just made the meals on the fly) and ends up giving you lower quality shitty food.

                Anonymous

ok say it takes you three hours on sunday to meal prep for the rest of the week. the alternative is cooking every night.

                3 hours = 180 minutes
                180 minutes / 7 days = 25 minutes a night

so unless you are spending more than 25 minutes to cook your dinner (you shouldnt be), it takes the exact same amount of time to "meal prep", except the meal prep takes three hours out of your day off. even if you are taking 35 or 40 minutes to cook each night, its WORTH IT because an extra 15 or 20 minutes cooking on a tuesday night is more acceptable to normal people than taking a THREE (or more) hour chunk of their fricking weekend. you absolute fricking moronic dipshit, you fell for a reddit meme.

especially when that chunk results in really low quality meals later in the week. so congratulations, youve wasted an afternoon of your weekend to (maybe) save a few minutes cooking each week night (when you probably wouldnt be doing anything else anyway), but the food is worse.

You could cook a large batch once, spending 30 minutes of prep and then letting it simmer for three hours. You then clean the pot once.
Or you could do this 7 times, given each cook takes about the same time whether it's 1 serving or 7.

excuse me but making a pot of chili or bolognese that you can have leftovers for a couple of days or otherwise freeze is not "meal prep" since this is the way it is prepared by definition: in a huge pot.

meal prep is making your gay little meals and portioning them out into gay little tupperwares and then reheating on friday the shitty soggy green beans you cooked on sunday, choking it down and saying to yourself "MMM SOOO GOOD BOY AM I GLAD I SAVED THAT 20 EXTRA MINUTES OF TIME"

Some prefer a freshly cooked meal and spend their time on that
Some prefer to save time on meals and spend it on other things

Fricking hate how reddit thinks preparing a large batch of food and eating it over multiple days is a hobby. I often prepare a large batch of food and eat it over 4-5 days, but I don't call it "meal prepping" or some gay shit like that.

People lost their religion, or never even had religion in the first place, so the only replacement they have is to form their identity around corporate brand loyalty and narcissistic virtue signalling. They congeal into myopic "communities" dedicated to some insignificant bullshit and then let it utterly dominate their life because nothing else gives them a feeling of purpose or meaning. They receive validation and approval from other narcissists, ever fueling their descent into the pseudo-cult.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Christcuck either, but I recognize the historical importance religion had in the human mind and the terrifying replacements that we've made for it since the industrial revolution. I don't have a solution.

Does anyone here meal prep one day at a time? So you make a meal in the evening for tomorrow's brunch/lunch at work? Eating out is becoming a bit too pricey for me so I'm looking at alternatives. I guess some quick/easy made meals could work? What do you guys do? Or do you just eat out when at work? I don't really have any leftovers because I live in a big family and nothing is left over usually so I'd have to make a special meal just for work.

/ck/'s obsession with meal prep hate is fricking hilarious to me considering 90%+ posts on this board are fast food circlejerks. Not everyone wants to use 20-30 minutes of their limited free time cooking a meal after working 8-12 hours. Neets and college students who skip class wouldn't know this. Meal prepping is quicker, cheaper, healthier, and tastier than getting garbage ass fast food. It's quicker, cheaper, can be healthier, and can be tastier than mediocre take out. You've never actually tried any form of meal prepping if you think otherwise.

not to mention lunch. if i don't want to waste $15-$20 on lunch everyday, I've got to bring something in and I like having a big meal so i've got energy for the gym after work.

r/mealprep's obsession with meal prep love is fricking hilarious to me considering 90%+ posts on this subreddit are moronic overtime wagie losers and divorced incels. Not everyone wants to use 3-4 hours of their limited free time cooking 15 meals after working their comfy, high paying 9 to 5 when they could just use 20-30 minutes each night cooking a fresher, tastier meal instead, or visiting a high quality restaurant where they take women on dates. Meal prepping is more time consuming because high value individuals value their free time such that spending several hours at once preparing low quality meals is simply not acceptable; it's a waste of time, which is more valuable than yours. You've never actually been a high value individual if you think otherwise.

It's easier if you're cooking for just yourself since cooking everyday with store ingredients is expensive, especially if you're buying single person portions since they're usually more expensive for some reason.

I never got why people do it with pasta though, just put the sauce in a container and make some fresh pasta each time. Obviously that doesn't work for some things, but you can easily store a lot of them, and then you don't have to eat rubbery pasta for the next four days

Also it helps to have a big freezer, since I don't trust leftovers more than two days old. That way you also don't have to eat the same thing four days in a row

Most recipes online are also usually for four people so it saves having to bother converting everything

Meal prepping is really gay, it only makes sense if you have to cook every meal like your life depends on it like some autist.

I cook lazily. I hate using too many pans/pots or utensils because I know it will have to be cleaned, I refuse to spend more than half an hour slaving away in the kitchen to make something, finishing things off in the oven is ideal. I eat shit loads of boiled eggs just because they're good, healthy snacks and help when you're waiting for something in the oven to finish

None of this is hard and can easily fit around a full time job. I really don't understand how people can't cook lazily and save themselves the headache of planning meals and preparing 7 of them in a day, what a shit way to spend your weekend. I also never bother eating lunch, I just eat a lot in the morning and feel fine until the evening

I tried meal prepping but my brothers kept stealing my meals. Plus I realised I was really bad at portion sizes and my last meal would always be short. Plus food goes off after 3 days. Easier to just shit out one quick meal a night and if ipI happen to be so busy I can’t cook I just scramble eggs and eat them with spinach or kale. It’s not a big deal.

It's weird to me that people think bringing prepared food in a container is in any way new or strange. I see people bringing up bento boxes like lunch boxes aren't already a thing here in the West. When I was a kid my mom packed me sandwiches with the innards in one bag and the bread in another and I kept it in an insulated lunch box and combined it all with a mustard packet from the cafeteria. As an adult I largely kept the same habit but I had to bring my own mustard and used reusable containers. I get home, I parcel out a serving of lunchmeat and put it in its container which goes in the fridge. Put the bread in its container. Put the ice pack in the freezer. Put it all in my lunch box in the morning before I go to work and I have lunch solved. I was doing this myself as early as 2010 and you gays want to tell me it's some new internet trend? Frick off.

        >nobody thinks that.

        >It's not some new hipster invention.

Because the vast majority of construction workers on new ground up sites are single/divorced men who live alone and end up eating cold food because there's no temp power

No. Cooking daily has a spiritual value. Most people's days are dominated by unending tedium, working towards goals that won't be attained for years. Cooking at the end of the day is a creative outlet which allows you to see a project from beginning to end in a short time span. It gives you a daily dopamine hit that only completion of a job can provide.

meal preppers are adults who never learned to cook growing up and don't have much interest in food
they're used to eating either fast food, some other kind of takeout, ready made frozen meals or lunches packed by their mothers (you can tell this when you look at the photos of their food, they are trying to replicate the look of either takeout, frozen dinners or mommy's lunches or from when they were a kid)
at some point they realized they need to cook homemade meals, either to save money or for health reasons or both
and because they never learned how to cook this takes them a very long time
and having little interest in food makes it worse, because it is a boring chore for them
it's so excruciating for them that they can only bear to cook one meal a week
so they cook their shitty meal and attempt to pack it up in a way that gives them the feeling of security and comfort
"it's ok, it's ok, you won't have to cook again for the rest of the week, look someone has made all these meals for you! it's ok"

I enjoy preparing food for far in the future. All you really need is hardtack and pemmican. Sometimes I don't feel like making pemmican, so I get a big block of aged cheddar (last forever with vinegar), make banana chips (couple weeks), and jerky. It takes about a full day of putting stuff in an oven and forgetting, and I end up with at least a week or 2's worth of food. Some day, I'd like to make an entire month worth of food in a 2 day window. Also, I make coffee by grinding the beans with mortar/pestle and boiling it in a pot; that's how I eat the hardtack, which is otherwise inedible. If anons learn to can, cure, ferment, and pickle, you could probably store over a year's worth of food with maybe a week's effort or less.
