Simplest and most beautiful form of 'community engagement'. The citizen must see who defends them, and how. The soldier must know who they fight for.

Because the US' military protocol is about damage mitigation. That means securing every possible opportunity for overmatch. It's like when people ask "did a Black person with a knife really warrant 30 cops magdumping with ARs?" The goal wasn't killing the Black person, the goal was keeping unionists alive while doing it.

The US doesn't really do military parades, but air shows are sort of a replacement for them.

While true, we also do other things to show off our military while also having fun. Military bases do open houses for the locals to show off equipment. Like the ones in japan where the U.S. military holds events and let japs inside the base and hang around with the troops.

    >but muh projection theory
Only based countries do military parades because they want the citizens to be proud. Most americans forget how strong the US military is until they hear about a new drone strike on a family while the media tells you to be afraid of countries on the other side of the planet pretending to be relevant.

finland has a yearly military parade but it's more of an independence thing than a military thing, being on the independence day and being called "the independence day parade"
it is however of note that the fdf is seen as the ultimate guarantor of independence in finland

The US also has 4th of July Parades which work in a similar basis ideologically, though the military parade aspect is 99% historical stuff and the modern forces don't do much beyond sending a squad or two in dress uniforms to carry the flag interspersed between all the civilian floats.

It has more to do with the leadership than the military themselves. Military parades is a way to project strength, real or imaginary.

It's cute! And certainly not a flex which is what most of the above parades are about.

I mean, the parade is probably a flex, trying to say that they're a real country with an army and everything but the T34 leading it isn't, it's like a mascot or something.

Not weak but perhaps authoritarian. Whatever else China is, it's not weak.

I want to say that they're a feature of dictatorships but then I'm not quite sure how to explain picrel.
It doesn't feel the same since aside from anything else, they invite everyone else's military to come join in. I'm not sure that the Marine Corp silent drill troop get invited to Red Square or Tiananmen Square.

France also has their big Bastille Day parade, so it's not solely a feature of authoritarian nations either. I think it's more a result of nations having a founding mythos in near history where the military played a key role. The US hasn't had an existential war since the Civil War, and even that one was a strange thing that everyone wanted to bury to get back to business as usual once it over, while countries like France and Britain may have old history but saw a huge moment in their history during WWII and most dictatorships are even younger then WWII in one way or another.

You do not realize how much the US bulked up for the war. They weren't that strong until the war forced them to become a powerhouse.
After the war, they no longer had the need for parades.

Authoritarian countries do military parades to remind it's citizens/subjects how much hard power government has at it's disposal - as both intimidation and as an attempt to strengthen the herd instinct.

    Authoritarian countries usually are weak.

Military parades are an outdated form of performing statehood, the performance of statehood is the reason almost every nation has a similarish flag, a similarish nation anthem, etc.

To be recognised as a nation you have to play by the already established rules, and one of the rules of the past was that nations did military parades, some more conservative nations have simply failed to let go of this practice
