Was used in militaries at least untill recently. A bit heavy, ammo should be available, a lot more ak rifles floating aboot though. But since even maxims and mp40(somtin like it) were sighted in ukraine. Lee enfields used in the 1980 afghan invasion and 8mm yugo copy of the mg42 was used in yugowars i do not see a reason why an insurgent / poorgay nations wouldnt use them

I was going to argue with you on the weight portion, but then I looked it up. Holy frick it's mostly just stamped sheet metal and a tube.

How the frick is that 8 lbs?

what a steady diet of chinese pot metal and 50 years of deindustrialization does to a MF

I guess being lighter and cheaper than the Thompson boat anchor is a low bar. But that's still heavy for an SMG anon.

The bolt is like six pounds of that, it needs very heavy trunnions, and barrels aren't light. Plus we're dealing with basic spec sheet metals, not something tuned for the gun. The heavy bolt is necessary to keep the cyclic rate down. It also makes the recoil much less severe, though with .45 the "pushy" impulse is already a lot easier to deal with than the "snap" on 9mm
The real fun part is that the mags weigh about two pounds more fully-loaded than empty and they're mounted a bit forward of the center of gravity. So the muzzle flip gets worse with every shot.

The only way to make that ugly son of a b***h uglier would be to slap rails onto it.

Eh I am the anon you replied to and that's fine. It's ugly but it doesn't have pretension to what it is. I'd hate a tacticooled version more

Its a huge improvement over being unarmed and clears buildings better than a new built handgun or an anti-material rifle, buts its totally non-viable for anyone with the resources to use modern SMG or carbine instead, since those are going to do the same job better. Its also old enough to cause logistical issues and it may be difficult, and get more difficult with time, to commercially solicit related technical services

It has its uses but most unit equipment is going with synthetic lube and sealed bearings.
