Just before dawn and just after dusk mine glow on IR because of the temperature differential. It's useful but it has some drawbacks like the limited time window and also it doesn't work for buried mines.

Russians were probably too lazy to bury the vast majority of them, knowing Russians. They just dropped a shit ton of them because their orders were to drop X amount so they did it with the least amount of effort like the slaves they are.

Shut the fuck up you dumb pajeet moron. They retain heat well because they're made of fucking metal and they're sitting in the sun for long periods. This method is used exclusively at dusk because that's when they can be spotted with thermals easily.

    Is it really that easy?

Yeah but spotting them and actually removing or avoiding them are different matters.

Cant you just bomb them to detonate them? Some cheap shells would be far faster and cheaper than using a mine clearing vehicle.

        Anonymous

Many mines are blast proof meaning they don't detonate due to over pressure.

wont a HE shell detonate them due to blowing them up via explosives though?

You won't clear a field fast enough to do that and you will have to drive through craters risking getting stuck. All it takes is for the *plop*, *plop* truck to fill in the blanks. The line charge clearing method is much better but the vehicle would get btfo before reaching the field by ATGM's. No clearing can start unless establish an area of control where the clearing efforts won't be stopped by the attacking side.

How do you stop them fucking you up with long range rocket artillery if they already know where the mines are and also when they've been forced out of the area? Recon on a minefield with drones must be easy so they would spot any clearing operation.

        >Cant you just bomb them to detonate them?
For many types of mines yes. Only it takes massive blast wave.

Like M58 MICLIC cintyains 1750 pounds of explosives and only clears 350 by 26 feet area.
Also there are types of mines fuses that aren't triggered by blast wave.

they need to have a drone with thermals and gps find them and mark them then have smaller drones with metal detectors fly to the marked areas and drop a small shaped charge on top of them
If you can automate that process with AI or something it would be an effective anti-tank mine clearing system
you have them drop the small shaped charge and then remotely detonate them all at the same time

There's small anti-personnel mines spread around the anti-tank mines so you cant just have people go pick them up

Once the anti-tank mines are all destroyed have those big anti-mine vehicles just roll over the area and detonate any remaining anti-personnel mines.

Thermal capacity and conductivity difference will show up in one form or another on thermals. Unless burried deep

    it works at dusk
the grass and soil around the metal mines cools faster than the mines so you can configure thermals to pick up that difference

That isn't why it is done, retard. It is done so you know where the god damn minefield is so you send people to go demine it. Do you not understand this? Being able to know where you've got to demine is, you know, a good thing.
