Is it possible to make a handgun using some combination of caliber and barrels that can defeat Level III plates?

Is it possible to make a handgun using some combination of caliber and barrels that can defeat Level III plates?

There's a crackhead in my neighborhood who has begun to tape / tie cast iron pans, trash can lids and other types of metallic items to his body and I need to be prepared. I know he's seen my grow lights on at night, and know that fricker is planning something.

Yeah just take the stock off a rifle that can defeat the armor and it's a pistol.

Do handgun rounds have any possibility of penetration? What about 9x25 Dillon?

I dunno man I was just making a joke. I haven't done any research or testing on the idea of armor-piercing pistol calibers.

Legit III plates or just random metal trash? Because even .22 Mag out of a pistol will penetrate the thickest part of a cast iron skillet at range.

Yeah, legit Level III's. It'd be a fun project.

With tungsten? Easily. With legal materials? Trickier but possible. An aluminum cored 9x25 at max pressure, barrel length, and a sharp point might be able to punch III steel.

Tungsten is illegal for bullets? I never knew about aluminum. I always associated it with softer metals, but I think I was confusing malleability with hardness. Or is it just the lightness of it increases velocity?

I'm thinking something like a G40 with 7.5 inch 9x25 Dillon barrel now.

Aluminum is commonly as strong as copper which is used in pistol caliber solids because brass is illegal for pistols. Stronger aluminum is at least as strong as brass, actually. Copper, aluminum, and brass are all way stronger than lead, and lighter, but aluminum is the lightest, so it can be pushed the fastest. 9x25 can get well above Mach 2 with copper solids out of a 9 inch barrel, a lighter aluminum cored bullet might just be fast enough.

Lead 5.56 will penetrate level III steel at around 3200fps, as I recall.

5.7 needs a 10 inch barrel to defeat armor, If you're using it in a pistol you're better off with .22mag.

        >Kel-Tec have stated [PDF Link] that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy.

        >This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR! 1

        >This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.

A frying pan isn't very tough I saw a video where a guy punched clean through one with a .22 tcm and then a 5.7
actual level iii though I'm not sure a legal "non armor piercing" pistol round exists short of an ar "pistol" there's claims like that 9mm dangy dagger being supposed to evenbtually go through iii but it's not capable of or even out yet and any of them spike shaped bullets I'd be concerned about the wounding effect of anyways

5.7 black fangs can at least beat IIIA, but they're not available to the civilian market. Velocity aside, they're probably can't beat III simply due to weight. Hot .500 mag or .45-70 with the right bullet can probably punch through with brute force.

I've seen 45-70 brass solids and 500SW copper solids bounce right off III steel.

I wouldn't be surprised, generally. If you can get spire-pointed bullets to impact in excess of 2000 fps it might be different.

In the usa isn’t it legal to buy any type of rounds in certain states? Or is it illegal everywhere?

I imagine you could always just make up for it with capacity.

They're literally just not for sale. You have to find them secondhand acquired from who knows where and even then they usually go for $9/rd.

5.7 copper solids are legal for civilians and they penetrate soft armor significantly better than 22mag.

700gr at 1200 FPS means that thing has less energy than a standard 7.62x51 M80 ball cartridge. It is going to do exactly nothing to someone wearing level III armor. It's too slow to get through.

Yeah it does dumbass, transfer or force is a real thing.

Go ahead Mr. Expert who has never passed highschool physics, tell us all how it works. In the meantime, here is someone getting shot with an FAL point blank, notice how it doesn't do shit. As I note earlier, M80 ball has more energy than that .500 magnum loading. The FAL is more powerful, it doesn't crush organs, it doesn't break ribs, it doesn't even push him. And that's some ancient by modern standards armor, it's gotten much better.

You are mostly correct, but I'd like to point out that momentum plays a role in BFD that means a heavier round with the same energy will hurt more.
More is a relative term, as it's not going to kill you either, but still.

Possible to make? Sure. Neck down 50AE to .30 caliber and shoot something harder than lead at max pressure.

You could probably wild cat some .22-.25 cal necking down of 10mm auto and do it. Light weight but very fast bullets.
7.5FK can already put backface deformation on LvIII plates. Thats 101gr at 2000 fps.
So a spitzer .22 cal round of ~60gr at 2500FPS could probably do it.
