      1 hole > 2 holes

how significant are the complications of having one or more 180g expanded hollow points floating around in your torso?

in the thoracic cavity: significant. could nick an unlucky blood vessel. someone is going to have to retrieve it.
stuck in a muscle: more of a nuisance.

Is it better or worse to have an exit wound?

depends on where the hole is. I'd rather have a bullet stuck in my spine, short of the spinal cord, than have it blow through it. but I'd also rather have a clean-through hole that luckily missed everything vital, than have an expanded hollow point resting on my aorta.

Obviously it depends on where it is and whatever condition the hollow point is in. Presuming you can stop the bleeding, the lead isn't able to enter the bloodstream, and it didn't hit anything vital, it's usually safer to leave them as is.

        from the round itself?
not much, it's what those pieces hit and the fact that all the energy from the round dissipated inside the target causing the most damagae

        Quite.
It not going through you means that it couldn't hit that artery it's two inches away from.

Getting shot regardless if it goes through or not = surgery

If you're the one being shot, yes. If you're the person with the gun, you always want to make two big holes.

if you recieve good treatment afterwards, having the bullet stop inside your body should be better because the tissue behind it and whatever important stuff there may be, is still intact. they can even still just pull the bullet out the other end if they find that to be the least invasive way
often smaller fragments that the bullet sheds along its path are harder to get out or overlooked
if you cant get good treatment, it can be better if the bullet goes through
for stopping a thread, its better if it goes all the way through. its not so much about 2 holes but a longer wound channel
there is also the concern with overpenetration and it makes sense in theory, but you cant count on a bullet to go deep enough into a person and not go through. the body isnt a block of ballistics gel its different everywhere. different thickness, amount of bone etc. and that person is also moving. youre probably gonna miss some
anyone behind that person is always in danger

As a hunter I always aim for having an exit wound. It makes tracking much easier since you get a bigger blood trail. Of course in hunting you have the luxury of being able to pick your shot to have a backstop, so bystanders are a non-issue.

I think the optimum performance is to have the round exit with just enough energy to penetrate clothing on the other side.

All men are made of water. If you pierce them, the water leaks out and they die. Two holes leak faster than one.

also water but you don't need to poke big holes in them to make the water come out

Better, but it is at the cost of liability if you hurt something behind the target. An ideal handgun cartridge fully expands the bullet and fully penetrates the target, but has used so much of its energy that it is no longer dangerous to anything after exiting.

I would vote "better" if the exit hole is a giant gaping mince of flesh making the target bleed out faster. In SD scenarios, if you are a hunter and pristine skins are your interest, then maybe maximum internal damage without perforation.

    Better
that's 10mm it will expand to .70 and still make an exit wound

better-ish, some of the kinetic energy didn't go into your organs, but now you got a massive fricking hole so that sucks.
maybe try to not get shot instead

In a self defense situation I'd just shoot my attacker again rather than worry about this.

Doesn't matter outside of tracking game.
    >Inb4 twice the holes
Organs are located in body CAVITIES that have plenty of room for exsanguination. An extreme example of this would be aortic dissections or avulsions. The former are frequently seen in car accidents where no penetrating trauma occurs. Regardless of that, death can result in seconds. This is for the simple reason that the body cavities have enough space for more blood than you can loose.

It seems like a lot of people operate under the presumption that people are mostly solid and that entry/exit wounds are the limit to blood loss, this is simply not the case.

if movies have taught me anything, it's that a bullet will kill you if it's stuck in your body. so i would say an exit would is better

Better. Through and through wounds are less complex. They often imply that the round only went through soft tissue. If the round is still inside you, it was either something very weak or it dumped a lot of energy bouncing off shit inside your body.
