No, as long as you don't get drunk and get lost/dead.

Only it's not just karens you're bothering; it's a legitimately offensive odor. Also, if you're gonna go out of your way to be an butthole make sure you do it somewhere with reception; the wilderness is not the place to test strangers.

If you can enjoy a small drink without actually getting drunk I don't see why not, but if you lack the self control and are the sort of person who can't enjoy a night out in nature without your addiction, just stay home.

Potheads are no better than alcoholics. Just obnoxious in different ways.

It will dehydrate you and make you tired, so unless it's a really easy trail it probably is.

I'm a weed enjoyer myself but you're just making people hate us when you do this shit, knock it off.

Do people like the taste of whiskey? It tastes like drinking mouthwash to me

There's a big difference in quality with whiskeys but I like the taste of decent stuff, my go-tos are Bushnell's Red Bush and Wild Turkey 101.

nobody smokes weed for the flavor, and you cant just light one up without getting high. I sip on liquors because many actually taste good, and only in small enough portions that I don't get drunk or even buzzed

Stoners are very annoying and generally non cooperative

I like to drink at camp. Nothing better than sitting by a good fire and having a few drinks, plus is helps me sleeps and eases my anxiety about being alone in the woods at night. The only downside is that is that I prefer beer, but it’s too heavy to carry a bunch of beer for more than a mile or two so I have to bring liquor instead.

I find a nice mugwort tea in the evening really helps me chill in the evening and have a nice dreamy sleep. Weighs hardly anything too. I recommend it.

I have a really great memory of being at the top of Healy Pass with my dad and him pulling out these tiny cans of Irish whiskey for us to have a drink. Don't get smashed on a mountain though obviously.

Minty and refreshing? That's an interesting whiskey. Usually it's somewhere between a hot piece of vanilla wood ranging to a mouthful of burning peat sod depending on the whiskey for me.

good stuff has a smoother taste but you can always water down the cheap stuff to taste some fruity caramel tones aswell. All in all it is a massive meme though expensive scotch is just smoother to drink neat not much else.

          Anonymous

That depends entirely on the region it came from. Some very expensive scotch can taste very very aggressive.

            Anonymous

yes it may be strong but not cheap grain alcohol strong. What makes a good whisky imo is the balance of flavors where it may have a kick to it but it's not disgusting to sip neat. Either way it's not something that important anyway. I like mixing cheap crap with water or juice to solve the problem. I really liked green label for example but is it worth it? absolutely not. A bottle of good ol jack daniels will do.

Just bought a little steel hip flask, chucked it on to my order at the last minute at a price of £2. Now I can take a dram of scotch along, and it will probably hold 6 drinks, or 4 proper stiffners on colder nights.

Depends on what you mean by on the trail. The problem with alcohol is that it dehydrates you and can add a significant weight burden to your pack. If you're on foot and don't have a lot of access to water, it's a bad idea. I haven't tried powdered whiskey though, so maybe that's an option?

      Anonymous

half a fifth plus the flask is less than a pound. less than 400 grams. if you're downing a 750 or more in a day hike you've got bigger problems than the weight. if you're really concerned about weight take ever clear and mix it with a powered drink. a pound will keep you pretty buzzed a couple days.

I sometimes take a flask with hard liquor. Be responsible and it's not a problem. Be an idiot and you can end up with a $$$$$ medivac from a broken ankle or worse.

What all the morons in this thread are missing is that there is a difference between
    >something being a bad idea
    and
    >something not being a good idea.

Yes, drinking whisky will not improve your miles per hour and may weigh down your pack, but you have to consider the externalities, i.e. that it's fun and relaxing and makes you look masculine, virile and powerful. So you have to consider whether your primary goal during leisure activity is to enjoy yourself or just to walk around outside a lot.

I've taken to bringing a small flask of good stuff with me on longer backpacks. Just a slow-sipped shot at the end of a long day though, sitting in the camp chair after dinner and watching the light fade. Feels good to wind down but no interest in catching more than the faintest buzz in a place where it would take someone weeks to find my remains.

It's not nearly as fun as heating up a bottle of sake to drink with your friends on a cold night, more portable though.

Backpacking, a couple 1/2 gram joints and a flask of good whiskey are great. Nothing like a little sip anbd smoke watching the sun go down over a mountain lake.

A red wine and a cigarette by the camp fire is one of life's great pleasures, one of the comfiest feelings going. As long as you don't feel run down in the morning and you're not going to have to get up too much to piss, I think a little booze is a great way to wrap up the evening.

one thing i will say is i find marijuana doesnt work the higher in elevation you go which seems ironic given it grows in the foothills of the himalayas. any time ive tried smoking a j on some peak its like i was smoking hemp or something it has barely any effect then once i get back down to sea level i get hit with a thousand pound bricks

I took down a few of these nips of angel's envy on the tail end of a 20 mile hike today when it turned boring following a railroad grade for 5 miles. Eased the knees, got me signing and serenading randos coming up trail. Getting drunk hiking is dangerously stupid but God meant for booze and the woods to mix, that's why whisky tastes like a campfire

I polished off a handle of rye this past weekend. My only regret is that it's too heavy. Maybe next time I'll transfer it into a plastic bag or something.
