          >The real question is why so many homosexuals here are so afraid of it
It's extremely esoteric, because it's antiquated in the way that muskets are antiquated. They aren't a practical solution to any problem anymore, so you have to have a really specific interest in the sport to get anything out of it. It's like people who are autisically into RC helicopters, or people who strap dinky little motors to their bicycles.

yes that's why there are literally a million+ USians out there hunting wild game with bows every single year

Bad choice of words on my part. I mean that they're not a practical solution to many problems any more, and where they are still serviceable, they're not the most practical choice. If you choose to hunt with a bow over a gun, you're choosing to handicap yourself with the more primitive and less intuitive weapon. You have to have a specific interest in the bow to go that route. Most people who hunt just want to hunt, and will choose a gun because it's the more modern and easier to use weapon.

There are lots of times/places where you can only hunt with a bow. If you're really passionate about hunting and you want to maximize opportunities, being a proficient archer is a huge asset.

iirc this is pretty much the main reason the compound bow exists, pretty much a loophole weapon to get around hunting regs that people eventually decided to use for competitions and shit.

I think bows and arrows are /k/ool. Modern crossbows just look so weird though, I get the materials advancements and all, I just wish they weren't so fricking awkward and goofy-looking. Makes the cheapest turkoid shotgun feel like a fricking cruise missile. Oh well I guess that's why everyone moved to guns when they came along.

Question: Is it just horseshit that crossbow's didn't need a lifetime's training as opposed to yew bows? Or can you really arm your inexperienced local peasantry and frick up a king's worth of armor a few days later?

      Anonymous

To answer your question, yes and no.
Crossbows took more time/materials/expertise to make but the training to use them would be short/easy. Training archers takes years of training and practice. Most continental armies moved to crossbow while england used warbows along with crossbows.

        Anonymous

Worth noting that the reason England hung onto longbows for so long was the same reason they were among the last European countries to rely on levy/conscript armies rather than professional soldiers: mandatory training for every able-bodied man, even in peacetime. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, learned to shoot as soon as they were old enough to draw a bow, and they kept it up their entire lives. Maintaining a real army is a lot more costly than just ensuring your general population is battle-ready at all times.

      Anonymous

You can easily train most people to use a crossbow in a few hours at most, an 80+Ibs warbow is something that takes a lot of experience and conditioning to use right.

      Anonymous

The best crossbowmen were full time professionals so there presumably was some considerable benefit to being highly experienced. Longbows do take a lot of training but due to laws requiring bow practice there were a lot of men who had it even into the 17th century, which is well after crossbows had been pretty much totally replaced by firearms.

Piercing armor is a question of the bow and the armor. Thick steel plates would resist crossbows but thinner ones like those on the arms or groin, or chainmail, could be penetrated by the most powerful military types.

      Anonymous

Crossbows look like weird gamer shit because its cheap. Fiberglass frames with those smooth holes is just low cost and also strong as well as light. A bespoke crossbow would cost as much as a nice gun instead of 150 bucks.

It can be both. People who bowhunt exclusively and girls who believe they are in the Hunger Games are insufferable. Bowhunters who stalk are /k/ as frick - especially if they hunt with a recurve. Western style stalking is highly respectable. Most lazy treestand warmers are not, especially if they hunt with a compound bow. Archery shops feel more like golf shops than anything else. Southern style bowhunting is basically golf for people who never learned to read well, quote Austin Powers and The Mask as though they're still relevant, and who unnecessarily bring up god in conversations.

I don't shoot Olympic at all and I don't compete. I shoot barebow and compound, both for fun and hunting. I've made a few longbows, I like eating meat, I like putting antlers on my wall and I like fricking around with sticks and strings.

An Olympic bow would be a lousy hunting bow - but what does it matter? Not everyone is into hunting.

If some gay wants to tell me that launching a razor tipped carbon fiber arrow completely through a buck at 280fps isn't awesome, they're moronic. If some gay wants to tell me that Olympic archers aren't actually good shots because they use stabilizers, they're moronic. And despite how shitty the stickbows I've made are, they're still lots of fun.

      Modern recurve.

Compound bows will always be gayer than traditional, which uses weapons that actually look cool and need good muscles

You still need to draw the entire weight at some point in your shooting process, even on a compound.

Compound lets you hold it for a long time, though. If you have subpar muscles, you can't do that with traditional bows.

I was going to make a thread about bows. I used to shoot a recurve years ago but quit because it gave me back problems. I'll be in the market for a compound bow soon and at bass pro I saw compound bows as cheap as $300 and some I think we're over $1000. Why do they vary so wildly in price? Any reason not to get the cheapest possible compound bow?
