It’ll kill someone but you probably want 30 round detachable mags tbh you’re not Gran Torino

Holding fewer rounds is a handicap. This is from someone who loves shotguns, has taken shotgun courses, but still recognizes that having 30+ rounds available in a rifle creates massive advantage.

Imagine the advantage of a 30rng shotgun?

            Anonymous

It would absolutely be an advantage but we both know a 30 round box of 12 gauge would be comical and impractical. Even the magazine pictured holds like what 3 to 5 shells?

Nothing that puts your eye out is obsolete at all. Of course The Queen of the Battlefield is completley viable.

It'll still kill someone dead as shit. It is still good, but it is outdated and outclassed by more modern weapons.

It was already obsolescent end of war and into Korea. Low capacity, heavy, fairly prone to malfunctions due to it's open system.

You could certainly do worse but you could absolutely do better for less $$

Id argue it was fine still at the end of WWII if only due to manufacturing capacity of M1s vs things like AKs and Sgts. The M1 is at least on par with the sks and m1 carbine

        Anonymous

The SKS is better for general infantry use. Especially the Chinese mag fed ones. I'd still take an STG over either of them though. Full powered rounds as mass issue only makes sense from a logistics standpoint because you only need to ship one kind of round for your rifles and GPMGs.

          Anonymous

how many functional SKS and STG were made by 1945? the garand was not obsolescent in 1945 if for no other reason than it was the only semi auto rifle that could be produced in sufficient numbers to field for the whole army in 1945. The garand does not become obsolescent until we see mass fielding of detachable magazine rifles

    >viable battle rifle
    yes, it still works
    >completely obsolete
yes, it has been superseded by rifles that do everything it does better and cheaper

it will become obsolete when you run out of ammo or parts to mantain it

    >weight, too heavy
Ok. Or lift more. Off-hand shots are for retards in basic, as soon as you hear the whiz and crack, you hit the deck and fire prone. Even off-hand with a 14.5 AR, you'll be stable for less than a couple of minutes. At least the weight sucks up the recoil well.
    >30-06
Heavy but you won't need to hit the target twice. Inability to lay suppressive fire will be your biggest weakness.
    >does not run dirty
Keep your guns clean. I don't care how well it does in the mud test, keep it clean and wet. Unless it's cold or sandy, then clean and dry lube.

If it's all I had, I would be fine with it. The only real downside is the lack of centerline optics mounts due to stripped clip feeding.

It’s one of the best semi-auto options outside of the HCAR of you wanna be able to clap level IV plates

maybe? I'm just new to guns and trying to learn stuff so i can decide what full power rifle to buy/build

          >maybe? I'm just new to guns and trying to learn stuff so i can decide what full power rifle to buy/build

Anon, a collector's item like the M1 Garand will cost a small fortune for a mil-surp one left over from the 50s that is still in halfway good condition.
          https://www.gunbroker.com/item/959551306
There is one from the Civilian Marksmanship Program in "Service Grade" that is already starting to rust for $7,900 USD.
          vs
          https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-gen3-pa10-18-mid-length-308-win-1-10-stainless-steel-15-lightweight-m-lok-str-2-stage-rifle6.html
PSA manufactured AR-10 for $850 that is newer, better built and generally superior in every way.
Unless you are trying to LARP as a WWII or Korean War soldier, have a hardon for 30-06 or just REALLY like old collectible rifles, you could save thousands of dollars by just buying a newer rifle + better optics and ammo.

          >what is going to clap level IV plates that isn't tungsten ammo and isn't going all the way up to a .50 BMG?
Very large magnum caliber stuff going very fast. Preferably with tungsten or at the very least hardened steel penetrators.

Lvl IV can defeat even 338/.50 but with massive backface deformation so it might not matter the round was caught. The blunt trauma is probably lethal at that point.

You're much better off shooting where the armor isn't than trying to crack it.

obsolete doesn't mean it doesn't still go bang. obsolete means that it's outclassed by other newer things in every metric, and it is.

  10. 2 weeks ago

I mean, it is still a 30-06, which makes it a dangerous full-power rifle. That said:
    >8 Round stripper CLIPS
    >No box magazine compatibility
    >Shitty reloads
    >Zero compatibility with modern optics and electronics
    >Questionable compatibility with muzzle devices
    >Not even the most accurate weapon of it's era

Its kind of like, literally why? The money you spend of one in good condition could go towards a weapon that is superior in every way.

  13. 2 weeks ago

Compared to modern rifles yes its obsolete but that dosen't mean it isn't viable, just much less practical than your modern options. It can still perform as a battlefield instrument so long as there is ammo to chew and the limitations of the platform don't conflict with the tactics in play.
The Garand has a lot of time before it is relegated to the same level of irrelevance as a musket had during the Second World War.

As long as the Mosin is still issued, it's not the worse thing you can fight with, but you definitely don't want to fight alone if that's all you got.
Real killer among weapons is the explosives, and small arms are for pinning your enemy in place to administer them.

  17. 2 weeks ago

my main rifle is a muzzleloader shes accurate enough and gets the job done with one round i wont be storming the trenches with it but it will make an ok 2nd/3rd line rifle to follow behind all the guys with gucci gear and snag a new rifle off some dead enemy or friendly that wont be needing theirs anymore
so dont knock anything that shoots whether obsolete or even antique
so 30-06 or a .50 cal minie ball ain't anything to laugh at if you know how to aim
