Freshly paved my driveway, it's now an Iranian aircraft carrier. Little brown men came in the night and hung a portrait of some kind of angry Indian Santa on my garage door. Advice?

There's something vaguely amusing that these third world cope ships are in fact some of the largest warships in human history

Third worlders are easy to please. They see big number and that's all they care about, actual capabilities be damned. China has more ships despite being half the tonnage of the US Navy, doesn't matter because more ships. Iran make big boat, doesn't matter if it can carry 1-2 helicopters and plop a few truck-based SAMs on it, big ship make brown al-ghali happy! Missile shoot long or artillery have big shell, CEP measured in the realm of kilometers? Don't care, it big and long range.

Isn't each one of these basically equivalent to a nuclear bomb?
Build up a fleet of these relatively cheap long range ships, fill them with drones. And have one sitting outside the Panama Canal, Straits of Malacca, Suez, etc and if Iran is attacked you launch all those drones at all merchant ships within range.

      Anonymous

Okay but that would just mean each one would get blown to kingdom come simultaneously as a direct prelude to a full scale assault.

      Anonymous

Anon I'm not sure they can even launch enough of their Shahed drones to actually sink another cargo ship before local security forces took action and cleared the deck of anything that moved, and if action was taken against Iran those assets would be the first things to go.

        heh
Though I kind of wonder if autonomous versions of those could have any utility for real armies as decoys. Could likely slap one together for <$100k, just stamped sheet metal and plastic and paint to make a somewhat convincing at a distance replica. Have them like 8:1 with real tanks. Against primitives with ATGMs might actually take some real fire even if they'd be worthless vs a real opponent (thermals would give it away).

they would get fricked up instantly in a fight with the US or any other western navy

that being said, they are working with what they have available and what they know. I'm kinda impressed they were able to coble them together and maybe they will have some usefulness against others in the region.

Only if said country had any respect for foreign and international copyright laws. It's not like Northrop can just go over to Iran and slap a cease and desist on the factory door.

Otherwise, they can try to discourage other countries from buying them, but countries willing to buy from Iran wouldn't give a shit about that, either.

No, it's a literal miracle if they're actually the ones making them. I can only assume they hire foreign contractors to do it for them. I mean, they can barely maintain their old fleet.
Anyway, from what limited information I can find, their copies are basically pieces of shit that can only serve as trainers.

they're not regular aircraft carriers, they are not designed to carry fighter jets and they are not designed to provide a landing place for fighter jets

their sole purpose is to serve as a launching platform for drones

      and they're excellent at that

Cool. Don't know how much value something so overt will have for a country with no force projection, but I hope things go well for them. Theres a reason the lean so hard on the quds force, because they cant afford to not fight asymmetrically. Never really got the impulsive seethe for Iran /k/ has, they're like north korea; completely irrelevant outside their immediate sphere. Id rather we let them build nukes and gave them 150 billion in aid; and let them and Israel duke it out once and for all on even terms.
