Taste of their own fricking medicine for once. I grew up about half an hour away from one of the more important airforce bases on the North Sea. For my entire life I've seen F-16's fly over my hometown to intercept Russian bombers armed with nuclear arms. Same goes for my father, and late grandfather (although it's Starfighters & Meteors for them).

As much as I like F-16's, in this town we're all acutely aware that whenever they scramble it might mean that we're moments away from all perishing in the perifery of a nuclear blast. Let Ivan feel their mortality for once, it might teach them a lesson in humility.

The only thing you Dutch homosexuals know how to do, is surrender civilians to be massacred at Srebrenica

          Anonymous

Only the Dutch did that because they're a nation of pussies. The Ukrainian contingent (ironically facing off against Russian volunteers fighting on behalf of the VRS) in Srebrenica held its ground until every last person in their Safe Zone was evacuated and then burned down their own compound to deny its use to the enemy. The British contingent repulsed the Serb attack altogether.

          >This can be contrasted with the Dutch peacekeepers who were deployed in Srebrenica. The Dutch unit and Nordbat 2 operated under the same regional command, in the same general area. The Dutch peacekeepers, representing a professional elite airborne unit, were more or less helpless for more than a year inside the Srebrenica enclave because they were unwilling to initiate any confrontations with the parties to the conflict, and because they were willing to be micromanaged by their home government. Nordbat 2, on the other hand, was something of a loose cannon, and earned a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. It even became known as "Shootbat" for its tendency to return fire, regardless of the formal rules of engagement.

Russia and America have touched one another's airspace with nuclear capable bombers for longer than your father has been alive. Do we actually intercept with 22s? I would have thought that'd be a job for the 15 since we're still nominally holding back some flight characteristics and radar signature for the 22.

To get any rcs radar you would need to lock on the f22. Hence the f22 pilot would notice and it would either be a diplomatic incident or they would stop althogether any f22 intercept.
It would be the dumbest way to get data on the plane as you can just use espionage/hacking to figure stuff out with no risk.
It would be akin to me breaking into your house and pointing a gun at your head to judge how fast you are able to draw a pistol in case we ever have to fight.

also learn what airspace actually is and how it actually works. Like , literally a month ago there was several days in a row where Tu-95's were intercepted and escorted out of Alaskan airspace.

Do we actually intercept with 22s? I would have thought that'd be a job for the 15 since we're still nominally holding back some flight characteristics and radar signature for the 22.

Yes, they do, And that's a non-issue, there's nothing like that they can practically learn from these incidents. It's about testing AD responsiveness.

Seems strange to me still, but I guess it's about using the best plane for the job in the .001% chance that it's actually a prelude to something.

There's plenty of Eagles stationed in Alaska, but I guess even the newer 15 variants can't supercruise so they'd be either slower or less efficient on the intercept.

What if pre-2014 Russia just offered to buy either Crimea or part of the Donbass? If they didn't ape out and make Ukrainians hate them, could they have just said "we'll give you like $300B for Donetsk", and told everyone "we freed le dumbass without bloodshed"?

There's a reason sovereign land sales are all of very small islands or border corrections or practically empty frontier or colonial land, you just don't sell your people and country so blatantly.
The donbas was Ukraine's industrial heartland and Crimea is such a valuable strategic location russia was pushing territorial claims there since the fall of the USSR.
No country would consider selling such large chunks of territory and no country would be able to afford what they would sell it for, and they would have to be the closest friend and most dominant overlord to be able to push such an inevitably unpopular move.
The reason Russia invaded anyways was because Ukraine overthrew the russia friendly government so those friendly relations preconditions for a sale disappeared at the same time a sale would have averted war.
