INTERVIEW WITH THE AMERICAN HUMVEE GUNNER

“We were going from newly liberated Ukrainian lines. We had captured some Russian positions earlier and the next stop was that village in the video. The house you see me engage almost immediately, had anti-tank weapons and anti-tank teams in it. My job was to suppress that house and allow the other vehicles to pull up to the village. That’s what I did until we got past that house. Then I started engaging the third house in the line of houses. You can see in the video there is small-arms fire coming from the house.

I speak Ukrainian. So, if I wanted ammo, I could ask for it in their language. But underneath the stress and pressure of that moment, things must have gotten confused. My crew had been trained that if I shout for ammo, or if I shout for anything while I am not shooting, they need to give me ammo. They passed me the AT4’s because during the mission briefing, there was supposed to be a BTR and a BMP inside the village and my job was to destroy the vehicle if it was spotted. That’s what he thought was going on, so he handed me the AT4.

I was originally going to throw down the second rocket, grab an ammo can instead and get the .50 back in the fight. But I wasn’t going to be able to reload the gun and traverse the turret because I was receiving fire from less than 50 yards away at the house. This guy was gunning for me. So I decided I was going to use the rocket and give this guy a bad day.”

“Some people think I was going to blind fire the rocket when I lift it up in the turret. I was doing two things. One, I was going to make sure it was clear of any obstructions because I was going to pop up real quick to fire it. I didn’t want it to get caught on a sling or the gunners strap while I get it up there and just catch a round to the face. Two, if the guy was still aiming at my turret, he would start shooting at the rocket before I was popped up. I took that second to hold the rocket to make sure I wasn’t taking shots, then I popped up, shouldered it and fired it.”

My turret jammed. I had to turn to the left side instead of the right side. As I came to bare, I saw a Russian soldier with an RPG tube, an 18 or a 22 or something. I saw him raising it up, and I just put butterflies down and started engaging him. So, either the .50 cal rounds I was shooting cooked off the rocket and fired it, or in that guy’s last split moment of consciousness he fired off the rocket. But basically, it was just me stopping an RPG threat.

I fired the two rockets and the initial 250 rounds from my first belt. I stacked two and a half belts into the ammo can. At the end of the video, you see me take out the guy with the RPG. We are about to leave anyway so I end up emptying the belt into the house just to make sure the guy who was shooting at me wouldn’t do that again.”

      Metal

How do you deal with an assault like this where a .50 keep rattling at you while it's on the move. Seems like the Russians had defensive positions but did not capitalize on it and just ducked and got fricked? Better camouflage of position? Have your own GPMG engage them? What would be the correct response.

Basically. Foxholes or trenches that can't be fired upon from the direction of the advance

Keep an m249 or at the very least your m4 in the turret spinning around with you so if you see someone with an rpg you'll have a small chance. Ideally if one humvee is reloading you'll have the other humvees cover you and even better if you have infanty dismounts. This guy definitely did a kick ass job for what he was working with.

It's healthier than what Russia does, which is portray its enemies as terminally incompetent even as they're tearing it a new butthole. They'd rather the Moskva have been sunk by their own incompetence than admit the Ukranians are capable of reaching out to touch them. They'll go kicking and screaming and insisting that they are even less competent than their incompetent enemies before giving anyone credit for anything.

If I remember correctly The Baltic Fleet on their way to Pacific, got nervous around Uk and shot up bunch of british fishing boats thinking they where sneaky japanese torpedo boats. Royal Navy of course went into Russians are going to bottom of the Channel mode but US meditated the issue before Baltic Fleet became a shooting gallery for british battleships. To be honest that would have been more merciful for the russians than what ended up happening to them when Japanese Navy actually met them.

        Out of the ashes

yep, my house has 50cm thick double brick walls and railway tracks in the support columns and traverse beams. also very important to have reinforced concrete floor for your ceiling. good thing grandpa took his experiences in wwii to heart too - since the house took hundreds of shells and a frick-ton of 12.7 during the war. literally had to cart out shrapnel for days afterwards.

Tons of other types. And of course in more peaceful places wooden homes or even "brick" where the brick is actually just a facade are extremely common. Makes sense to build different though if someone can.

Another thing that grinds my gears is even today how many people build fancy brand new houses with shitty or even non-existent basements. A basement for a new building adds tiny cost percentage-wise and is hugely hugely useful.

a lot of houses in europe have brick walls with the floors being wooden beams and planks. there was a recent case in Bosnia where a house built at the foot of a hill had a boulder break off, roll onto the roof and go through both the roof and wooden ceiling floor to kill a sleeping woman inside. those types of houses are complete death traps even if shot at with stuff like small caliber mortars.

16 inches (~40cm for normals) is not thick and it's not done "in case of war".
Anything between 20 and 50cm is normal and is done for the sake of thermal insulation. It means your wall is usually one layer of bricks (or blocks) plus insulation, plaster and cosmetic covering.
Over 60cm your walls are officially "thick" and probably has two layers of bricks with some extra insulation.

Not being on the scene, I won't speculate. If it was 100% a language problem he would have said it. American troops speaking Americanese to Americans frick these things up in the heat of combat too, so what makes you think this is mainly a language problem? The dude himself offers no explanation for why the confusion happened, only that it did and the context for it happening. It's very easy to see why someone who was expecting armored contact would interpret him screaming for an anti-tank missile as overriding previous agreements about screaming in general meaning .50 ammo, especially since we have video evidence of him defaulting to English and screaming for the word that would lead to such confusion.

So I decided I was going to use the rocket and give this guy a bad day.”

americans are omega-insecure about not knowing other languages or really being able to relate to other cultures outside their borders at all, some cope with saying why bother when USA is king anyway let them worry about understanding me -and while some probably actually believe that with good warrant, an American who went off to fight a foreign war most certainly is not one of those.

jamed for sure. despite all it's fanfare, M2 jams all the fricking time. the only saving grace is that M2 is also typically very easy and quick to un-jam and put back to working order.

          Anonymous

They jam because morons think that constant fire is good for the weapon system, M2's are literally designed to be fired in intervals.

I was wondering about that. I only have one year of conscripted service (Sweden), but I lugged around our old LMG (ksp58) and I was taught to fire in short bursts of ~5 rounds or so, meanwhile this dude is blasting his machinegun in full auto until it clicks. I did that once during an exercise by mistake, and we had to hold the fricking gun down and jump on the lever for barrel release in order to be able to get the barrel off the thing for cleaning.

What is the point of high capacity high RPM weapons if you should only use them in 5 round bursts? Sounds moronic

Fire more 5 round bursts in less time than low cap low RPM weapons

They can go on doing that for longer than an assault rifle. Having a heavy barrel doesn't mean it's immune to overheating, it just overheats less easily.

                >Sounds moronic
Not sure if you're baiting, but the intent is that one squeeze of that trigger send a shitload of lead downrange that due to dispersion and high rate of fire is certain to frick something up. Thus by firing shorts bursts and actively aiming you make the most out of these bursts by putting them on enemy targets. This versus holding down down the trigger where you hit a whole lot of nothing switching from target to target (and thus use more ammo, run out of the belt faster and overheat the gun faster).

Not that anon but Black person are you really retreating to such a dumb broad label? "Machine gun" merely means anything that can fire multiple rounds with a single human interaction, that's it. It encompasses everything from water cooled WW1 trench HMGs that could fire continuously until a barrel change was needed to LMGs that absolute can overheat pretty fast and purposefully make the tradeoff of endurance for weight which is perfectly reasonable.
                >muh "quick" change barrel
And no you don't want to be changing a fricking barrel on a humvee mid-fight you FRICKING moron. Want to minimize reloads/jams even.

For all the trash talk over how America supposedly hogs credit for WW2 (and even 1), certain parties sure are quick to give us credit here for sending some items and a handful of marines, oop, uh I mean agents, no I mean mercs, frick uhhh I mean individual, private volunteers.

homie, if the US decided to give the Ukis a couple of Abrams they would be in moscow already and you would be speaking Ukrainian

        Anonymous

If the US gave the Ukrainians a meaningful number of Abrams you would have them running out of gas almost instantly.

They'd have to use them mostly dug in, scooting just to fire the main gun as artillery most of the time.

The M1 was an excellent tank for its day and stays very competitive with upgrades, but it requires a hell of a logistics team to keep them fueled (including specialized fueling teams and equipment), and a shit ton of fuel.

You'd be better off giving them a bunch of Strykers, adding in the ones with anti-tank missiles and the ones with guided mortars. Those would have been killer up north. Bring your artillery with you on the run.

          Anonymous

I thought the big advantage of the M1's turbine engine was that while it was more fuel hungry then other choices, but it's also much less picky about what you feed it which means that they'd probably be able to keep them running.

            Anonymous

It does work with a variety of fuel types, though the US uses only jet fuel for it.
The real advantage is that it provides a frickton of power for it's size and weight compared to a traditional one, and therefore lets the Abrams be fast despite being as chunky as it is.

I was a 50 gunner on a humvee in Iraq in 05 and 06. I Always kept a rifle topside with me and a M79, pen flares and several spare cans. The guys in the backseats have nothing to do and should have fresh cans in hand. Ready to feed them up. That’s not a crew that’s use to working together in a gun truck.

Using a large, fixed ready box (looks like a wood one here) of 250 rnds aa seen here is a mistake. The cradle mount is designed to have cans swapped out. That way you arent fricking with loose belts. You just throw the spent can away and replace it with a fresh one.
