China is on the brink of collapse though. They are a non factor

        God I wish it fake.
They have laws to enforce manual labor. Despite asking multiple times for automation, better efficiency, fewer tertiary costs - we always had to employ 2-3 times as many people as we would in Shanghai, Shenzhen, or Guangzhou.
Also, I got dysentery 3/7 times I had to go. One of the main reasons I stopped being an expat was to stop my life being cut short, albeit living in China already cut it down.
While China might be the most chemically contaminated place in the world (on average, at least) India is a biological nightmare. Literally anyone not from there is going to have the shits. Worse, it's not just noro or E-Coli, but cholera, shigella, or some soup of god knows what. You cannot pay me enough to go back there, but I would easily take double my old salary to work in China again. At least I'd die quickly.

I would say India is closer to collapse than China, 100%. China has law and order, even if it's dystopian and often heavy-handed. India can't prosecute fricking rape. China can attract international investment; India drives it away consistently.
Both places are hellish, but like I said: China>India. Thank God I live in a 1st world country now.

Several countries (most notably, the UK) were/are involved in the design and manufacture of the F-35, not just the US despite them very obviously leading the program. More importantly however, both GCAP and FCAS (6th Gen Programs) are shown to be at the same stage as the Poojeets here, a conceptual mockup.

Japan had a domestic 5th gen demonstrator, they just didn't scale it up to a full size fighter for production as it was only meant as a tech demonstrator, those technologies have been worked on and refined and will be going towards the 5.5/6th gen GCAP fighter with the UK and Italy.

Japan arguably has the most 5th gen development experience outside of the big 3 (USA, China, Russia).

        >better than buying one
Not so. India has obvious strategic vulnerabilities:
        >Relatively high coastline/land ratio
        >the horribly indefensible Indo-Gangetic Plain right along the Chinese border
If the commielover powers that be in India would stop courting China and Russia desperately (may Gandhi rot) and instead recognize them as an obvious threat to India's independence, better choices could be made. It's easy to understand stealth jets don't solve either of the above concerns, and unlike subsidizing trains and boats instead (which are in demand everywhere at all times) having a domestic air industry is a poor avenue for sales in a saturated market. Buying foreign means cutting edge tech with lower average "startup" expenses instead of reinventing the wheel. The sad truth is that India is not trustworthy and can't afford to get into premium markets, even Russia's, as a result.

To make matters worse, most of the technology for modern jets shouldn't even be applied to rocketry, since the capabilities are overly exquisite and not practical for a country like India that needs effective rockets and/or missiles on the scale of tens of thousands to incapacitate a Chinese thrust, not just a couple hundred. Make some fricking frigates instead of 12 for the whole coast, yeah?
Also, it's a poor showing to spend big on stealth jets before bothering to collect ways to reliably intercept stealth jets, this is a perfect opportunity for asymmetric warfare that would put China on the back foot.

all the more reason to prioritize sending off your serfs to get foreign education in things that benefit the military situation and economy, not trophy programs like space or jet flight - if you have a weak economy, specialize in things that matter
For example, India could have been a major inovator for turboprops or turbofans instead. Boeing has been struggling for a decade (easy target), that would radically improve freight capacity and feed directly into relatively high performance, low cost kamikaze drones, which Ukraine is currently bullying Russia with, it's cheaper, and it matches the strategic situation. China can't afford to cover its entire country with interceptors as a matter of scale, especially not for that kind of low observable, low altitude target

the reason you need "stealth" jets is because jet engines are massive targets, jets operate in high observable/high altitude conditions, and they struggle to serve in non-superiority roles. Modern multirole fighters are basically a technologically miracle... so stop sucking up to the people who are bad at making them (Russia), buy into a foreign program for dirt cheap, and use the surplus to get sum fukkin trains and boats, or at least make some way more useful domestic aircrafts. Vanity jets won't carry 1000 APCs from Mumbai to Kanpur, a big ass fleet of domestic airliners respecialized as military transports will
contrast notably Turkey, which insists on jets not because it needs them for defensive purposes, but to project power across water and inhospitable terrain, in that case it makes way more sense, but India simply is not in that position

Mostly to verify japan was capable of producing technologies necessary for an official program. Xf-5 (which would develop into the xf-9) 5th gen indigenous engines. The japanese are designing the engines for their current 5+/6th gen program collaboration. Advanced flight avionics especially in regards to the thrust vectoring. The RCS was achieved not through paint but materials the plane itself was made of. Japan does this a lot. They like to test the waters. They did the same with their totally not ICBM epsilon rockets.

They had already committed to purchasing F-35 by the time the X-2 was flying, and the X-2 was only ever meant to be a small scale demonstrator, not a full scale armed fighter. The "full scale" version would've used two of the higher thrust versions of the engine and an airframe about twice as large as the X-2.

Instead of turning the X-2 into an actual fighter which would've taken probably another 5-10 years and billions of dollars, they decided to buy another (larger) batch of F-35s to cover their bases for the next 10-15 years while they worked on a domestic 6th gen program using what they learned from the X-2 demonstrator. That was the F-X program which would of course eventually merge with the UK/Italy's FCAS/Tempest to make GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme).

Japan still sees the need for modern fighters and domestic know-how/production but the F-35 is a good stopgap they can buy off the shelf from the US for cheaper than they could do an equivalent domestic fighter. Japan if given the option to buy NGAD might not even necessarily have elected to go with GCAP, but the US has made it pretty clear they aren't going to export NGAD or F/A-XX.

Japan literally made the original RAM material the US used on the F-22.

a Japanese chemical company made the the material and then a US company imported it, shaped it into the right pieces for the F-22.

It was one of the reason japan was kinda pissed off that they were told to frick off when they asked if they could import the F-22, in their eyes a Japanese company was already providing materials for the production, but yeah the US told them to frick off and japan has been working on a domestic fighter program ever since.

Right... Did you know you can only do that with liquid-fueled missiles? Most of their current stock is solid-fueled. It's also not an argument, since the source was one guy, without any real proof. Believe me, China is fricking corrupt; India is beyond worse.
India cannot develop anything novel. It apes the 1960s and fails half the time. India imports almost all it's oil too, and produces food so inefficiently that hundreds of millions are still subsistence farmers. It has no real automotive industry, no aircraft beyond props and the Tejas (lmao), and awful infrastructure.
Walk outside and tell me how your roads are - I've seen them, and they're always worse than China. They throw money at the problem and brute-force it. India throws money at it, and still can't pour concrete without tribals stealing it for homes.
Your rails use ancient British trains. Your electricity is a nightmare, and almost always without grounding safety. Your rich flee India at hundreds of times the rate that Chinese flee, albeit your country encourages the flight.
You steal tech from whites, and blame us when your imitation fails. India has no allies, no respect, and remains a 19th-century laughing stock. Even China - a hilariously oppressive, almost comically lopsided society - runs circles around India.
Imagine typing this knowing all that. Imagine thinking that you - having likely never visited China, nor any 1st world country besides - are somehow on the same level as Russia even. It's also funny you say factories are moving 'into' India, because my anecdote was about that. It was a fricking joke.
We made biologics intermediates, a very advanced and sensitive product, and still were forced to generate steam by firewood. That's the country you're proud of. Why did we have to pay 120 pipe diggers, when we had all the machines? Why did the aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. have to be paid for their bullshit 3 hours of standing around per day? It's moving in slow motion, and suicidally frustrating when you have to explain to the moronic governor why the autoclaves can't be what Ranjeet made in his backyard with an old boiler and some coal.

Citation needed. If it's not a call center or a cheap engineering slave, I don't know what you mean. We go to India for the jobs that don't matter - good engineers are expensive, so we trust them with the important jobs. SpaceX is like >90% White if you ever see any behind the scenes team pics. They don't do any diversity hires or bullshit jobs there. Also they utterly dominate the space launch market and are more than a decade ahead of every other space rocket technologically. Not only everyone else is still doing expendable rockets, but Russia and Europe are dead basically. China is spammig expendable rockets while hoping one of their startups copying Falcon succeeds. Falcon landed in 2015 and nobody even got close yet BTW. As for Apollo vs Starship, Apollo was a huge, multiple percents of GDP national project with a deadline and strong political backing. This fricked things up in the long term because once the novelty of flags and footprints passed, the thing got cut hard and there was no sustainability. Things don't move as fast or make bombastic impressions today because the desire now is to establish a long term colony all while working with a fraction of the budget, and the political backing to have a pork barrel jobs program with maximum money wasted for as long as possible. SpaceX is the one white swan disrupting this a lot of thanks to being private.

Its a big unsolvable mystery I think

2nd nation will be Japan. They're hitching a ride with America. India will be on the moon in mid 2030. Also Artemis is shit, complete shit. Starship isn't into orbit yet but they need it ready for dozens of flights for the orbital refueling for the lunar landing by 2026. Orion heatshield is so shit that NASA has no idea why it's falling apart and it's probably going to need a rework, adding years onto a system that has been over delayed by a decade at this point. Space suits aren't done. SLS barely works. Depending on how badly the Orion heatshield issue is, and how much work Starship needs before it becomes fully reusable and humanrated, you could very well see a race between India and America for a lunar landing

Fair enough, though the pitting appears to not compromise structural integrity. Definitely needs work tho. I just want a public-private program to not be delayed, just once...
                >Race between India and America
Absolutely not, given they haven't launched a single astronaut in their program. This year they might, after some tests, but going from that to ex-lunar reentry is never going to be on time. The Artemis heatshield is a good example of what even extremely experienced programs have to deal with, let alone one with less reentries than China. Again, low bar; again, not met.
