India Begins Manufacturing Kalashnikovs In 2023 After Painstaking Ordeal

India first received state approval in June 2014 to sign a deal with Russia to buy and license produce AK-203 assault rifles.
> Over 600,000 AK-203 assault rifles for the needs of the Indian armed forces are to be manufactured over a 10-year period. The first batch of 70,000 Kalashnikovs will be delivered from Russia within the period of two years and eight months.

India was too incompetent to produce AKs on their own despite the technology being decades old and which gunsmiths in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Yemen could make with their bare hands. So India signed a deal with Russia to build a factory for them, but was then too incompetent to even go ahead with it.

It took until March 2019 for the foundation stone to be laid for the Indian factory.

Fast forward to October 2019 and the order still hasn't been placed yet.

The deal finally gets signed in December 2019 and is worth 5,124 crore rupees (~$700 million). I bet a good chunk of that was pocketed by Indian politicians as kickbacks.
    > India's Defence Minister and Russian Defence Minister General Sergey Shoigu signed agreements including contract for procurement of 601,427 of the AK-203 assault rifles through Indo-Russia Rifles Pvt Ltd, Program for military-technical cooperation from 2021-2031.

The Russian-made AKs were delivered by January 2022.
    > Sources said that the first [Russian-made] batch is likely to be used by the air force, while the rifles to be manufactured at the Amethi factory will be delivered to the army, which is the main customer with a requirement of over 600,000 AK 203s.

The Indian factory starts running in January 2023.
    > Indian Army chief General Manoj Pande said last week that the first batch of 5,000 AK-203 rifles would be delivered to the army in March.
    > Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport are the Russian constituents of the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited, possessing 42 percent and 7.5 percent stakes, respectively.

i don't get how the Indians can't figure out how to produce AKs, even if they're AK-203s. It boggles my mind. Even the chinks can crank out AK-47s en masse. How is it that India can't figure out how to do it, even with buying a factory from the orcs?

        Anonymous

It's not that they can't, it's that India is closer to a confederation in practice than a federal or unitary government. Everyone wants the new rifle factory in their state and will stall the whole thing until they get it. Once the rifle factory gets built repeat the stalling with suppliers. Oh, and all those suppliers will be friends/family/economic patrons of politicians. And it's entirely possible that the suppliers don't have the capacity or know-how to produce the parts either.

This. India is a semi-feudal parliamentary confederation which makes it a sort of worst of both worlds between democracy and autocracy. Don’t forget the language barriers and ethnic, religious, regional and caste discrimination/prejudice/persecution/conflict

Receiving state approval in 2014 means they've been talking about buying them for who knows how long before that.
Indians don't even have the self-awareness to ask themselves what would it be like if the other side in their business deals was just as inept as they are. What if Russia took 6 years instead of 2 years to deliver the rifles? Then you're looking at 2 decades just to produce a fricking Kalashnikov.

        >i don't get how the Indians can't figure out how to produce AKs, even if they're AK-203s.
The AK-203 is the same thing as an AK-103 but with rails on it.

India could really use a war that causes actual existential concern to help unify it under a nationalist sentiment or just balkanize.

        >India could really use a war that causes actual existential concern to help unify it under a nationalist sentiment or just balkanize.
They have enough schizo nationalism already, it's gotten progressively worse ever since the average Indian got internet access a decade ago. India will only Balkanize going forward, possibly within this century, because the Hindutvas have taken Serbs as their role model.
Some of their policies are literally emulating China and Myanmar, such as stripping 2 million Muslims in Assam of citizenship. You don't strip large numbers of people of citizenship unless you plan to ethnically-cleanse them in the future, which is what Myanmar did to the Rohingya after theirs was stripped 1982. Pajeet nationalists used to praise China's policies against Uyghurs and other minorities prior to the 2020 border clash.

Pakistan has ethnic and sectarian divisions of its own and a history of military coups and dictatorships. With India the divisions are all multiplied by 100 fold, but they had two good things going for them in the 20th century: one was not having regional superpower dreams and largely keeping to themselves, and the other was being level headed about their own capabilities and trying to keep India's stratified society glued together. Both those things have progressively gone out the window in the 21st century. That's why their direction is heading closer to Pakistan's in the medium-term but potentially worse in the long-term.

Is this a troll thread? Because it's completely overlooking the fact they wanted the AK-203 as their service rifle on account of already having an abundance of AKs whether captured from Insurgents or license produced by Ishapore/OFB, therefore having stockpiles of 7.62, therefore wanting the latest iteration of 7.62 AKs that Kalashnikov has to offer foreign militaries.

You make no sense! So India can make AKs but needed to spend $700M for a Russian factory setup anyways?
How about the more plausible scenario that the AKMs that Ishapore started making aren't actually good and the INSAS already sucked balls, which is why India licensed AK-203s from Russia?

        > The Ishapore factory will soon start production of 50,000 units of this rifle in the first phase.
        > For over a decade now, the OFB has been attempting to develop an indigenous assault rifle on the lines of the AK-47. Initially, there was some embarrassment after an ordnance factory displayed an indigenous replica of the AK-47 at a defence expo in Delhi. This didn't go unnoticed and Mikhail Kalashnikov threatened to file a copyright violation suit against the Indian ordnance factory.
        > "Since then, our designers have been attempting to develop an assault rifle, using the AK-47 as a model but without replicating any of its mechanism. Three ordnance factories tried to develop their own variants.
        > The three factories at Ishapore, Kanpur and Tiruchirapalli built prototypes that underwent tests for the first time earlier this year. Minor defects were detected in all three variants.
        > While the one developed by the Ishapore factory was declared fit in all other aspects, it failed to operate successfully in mud. An assault rifle has to be effective in all conditions, even when fired from under slush. This defect was rectified subsequently and when the final round of tests was conducted, the Ishapore variant was declared the best.

In summary: India spent over a decade just to create a working AKM replica in early 2014. It had problems, which were supposedly fixed by late 2014. So they dragged their feet with the Russian AK-203 deal, but since the Indian AKM still ultimately sucked bad India had to buy the Russian AK eventually.

Not just that. They gave the Russian-made AK-203s (16.3 inch barrel) to the Air Force instead of just ordering AK-204s for them which have a 12.4 inch barrel. SBRs make more sense to carry in small spaces like in planes.

Indian 5.56 doesn't run on ar-15's and is actually over gassed and much more powerful(due to more powder and some bullet lengthening or some bs reason). Standard western 5.56 ar's will actually blow up if the use 5.56 insas. It's essentialy a different round. Kek

i had both nigerian and indian foreign students in a post-grad level class i took. thr nigerians werent super bright, but seemed level headed and at least able to listen to instructions. the indians, who universally had at least a bachelors degree from some indian university, some had masterz, were entirely moronic. they plagiarised everything, couldnt cite or write references at all, and just wrote very moronic shit that barely made sense or was even just unrelated to the work. they are the most incompetent people ive ever met.

Handguard doesn't hold zero so it's useless for anything but white lights and you're fricked trying to clean the thing if you shoot corrosive ammo which I wouldn't put past the Indians.

Considering that the Stock on the AK-12 tends to break and the polymer handguard is wobbly and can't hold zero, it's probably a good thing that the Indians went with the older designs even if it was just to save costs.

        >AK-12s aren't AK 200s
That's what I'm telling you. 200s are just 100s with rails and 100s are just modernized versions of AK-47/74.

200s were used as base for AK-12/15/19 with many changes - I don't know if any parts are interchangeable between 200s and AK-12 line. Basically all the changes are for worse, except maybe for new 5.45 magazine (rather cosmetic, but still).

Tbh I would probably take an AK-203 over an AK-15 too just because of parts compatibility. Some of the furniture on the AK-12 series is proprietary and it has some weird QD muzzle device system where you're basically limited to the original brake and a very small selection of aftermarket suppressors. There's some muzzle adapter that tries to rectify the suppressor compatibility problem though but I'd be worried about baffle strikes while stacking tolerances.

the indian military is a logistical nightmare, they have multiple western and eastern type planes, now they have to make 7.62x39 for the AK, 5.56x45 for the INSAS, 7.62x51 for the Sig 716's they ordered, plus 9mm and 45 for their PCC's
i went there once, an it's such a strange place, they switch between hindi and english every 3-4 words for no apparent reason

      Anonymous

Compare that to the Pakistan army logistics.
They have been using two platforms for 50+ years now.
      Battle rifle G3
SMG AK-47 (yes pakis define AK such)

Just a pile of shit. It shakes itself to death over extended use which shouldn't surprise anyone since if you look at three examples no rivets are in the same place. I would unironically trust some Pakistani garage built AK over an INSAS.

Paki garage builds have learned metallurgy. They now make really good Aks and even M4s

A few years ago Venezuela signed a deal for one of their local arms producers, CAVIM to manufacture the AK locally in Venezuela. CAVIM had most of the machining required to build the AK already. Russians insisted they would set up a new factory with Russian machining. Russians literally never finished building the factory and just straight up walked away with the money. Venezuela also has to use some of their old machines from building the FAL and buy more from China. Russia also simply could not produce the thousands of NV optics Venezuela ordered so they had to build them in Venezuela from Chinese kits. A literal third world south American commie dictatorship was disgusted with the corruption and industrial unprofessionalism of Russia. That should speak volumes.

Will Indian AK-203 be better or worse than Nigerian Beryl (also in 7.62x39 - pic related)?

Why is India placing itself over half of decade behind African Black folks with choosing AK platform in 7.62x39 as it's main rifle? I mean they were already one step in right direction of 5.56 with INSAS, like a modern country they want to be seen as. What's so appealing to military of every non-white country that they like 7.62x39 so much?

          Is the Nigerian gun bad?

Original Polish Beryl is the most battle proven AK in 5.56. Beryl in 7.62 is probably as good, since Beryl itself has it's roots in og AKM (via Tantal rifle), not AK-74.
First batch of Nigerian Beryls was built from parts made in Poland, so I don't know if there's any room for fricking things up.
All machines for Nigerian factory are Polish. Basically whole deal between Nigerians and Poles was very similar to Indian-Russian deal on AK-203.

Testing Nigeria-made Beryl vs India-made AK-203 would be very interesting. Please somebody make such movie on the Youtube. I mean in a few years (when both India and Nigeria makes rifles 100% from domestic-made parts). Please.

Galil is AK's cousin (Valmet is brother) rather than AK. Or if you transplant someone's heart to another person.

Beryl is AK. It looks like AK from iron sights to safe switch. Anyone who got use to AK and knows how to disassamble it, can just pick up Beryl and start using it (with only thing to learn being separate burst switch).

                >Anyone who got use to AK and knows how to disassamble it, can just pick up Beryl and start using it

Same with the Galil. That's like saying the XM16E1 and forward aren't AR-15s because they have forward assists.

                Anonymous

                Meh. It's like saying HK416 is G36.
Sure it's same family, but it's different gun that needs operator to develop different reflexes. From switching safety off to aiming (different placement of sights) everything is slightly different in Galil. It's exactly the same from OG AK-47 to AK-201 to Zastava M21 to Beryl etc.

AR-15's forward assist is just small stuff in comparison, like Beryl's burst switch.

5.56 is gay and kills nothing unless with sub-200m's effectively malinga cqb carbine 200-300+ m ak is bette rand has much much better stopping power. That's the entire reason US is transitioning to 6.8x51. The 5.56 is going to be pdw cartridge replacing 5.7, 4.6 and 9mm in carbine roles. 7.62x39 is counter-insurgency and fibua king. Especially with steelcore bullets. The Military has realised 5.56 is a round for homosexuals and homosexuals.

NATO just adopted 5.7x28 in March 2021 as its PDW round. And nobody outside the US will be using 6.8x51 anytime soon because 7.62x51 already exists.
