Russia MUST be defeated on the battlefield and seriously weakened for the foreseeable future. Not only for the future of our entire world, but specifically for the future of the "West". I hope this passes the purity test.

To be honest, it's not enough but I hope it'll end up being enough sooner rather than later. I wish Biden and co would have gotten a lot more aggressive a lot sooner. But that's not the thread topic, is it? I just want people to talk about who this guy is and what it might mean for him to be in this position.

This has got to be the major reason. They need someone focused on China as the major threat to the US now that its clear Russia is a b***h made failed state whose main threat to the US lies in nukes and not much else.

Well now, I reckon you're missing the point there, pardner. General Charles Brown's qualifications and competence as a military officer shouldn't be questioned simply because of his race or the era in which he was appointed. As a seasoned fighter pilot with over 2,900 flying hours and years of military leadership experience, he has proven himself time and time again. And I don't see how being in the Navy or Air Force would make someone more qualified to lead the Joint Chiefs of Staff than a member of the Air Force like General Brown. The man's got the skills and the expertise to do the job, and that's all that should matter.

DHS didn't exist until the 21st century. And I may be incorrect but I think the Coast Guard was originally part of the Department of the Treasury (can't allow smugglers to sneak by the tax man now can we?).

The US military tends to avoid a lot of the politicization problems that are endemic to the Russian and Chinese militaries simply because for the most part (but not always), our politicians don't pretend they know how to conduct war better than our generals so they tend to just point in a direction and tell the military to figure out how to fight it.

The Air Force has always been a laughing stock in every endeavor it was involved in. Its only talent is teamkills, being fat, whining about their PT and spending money.

Outside of the 20 men that make up AFSOC and the fighter pilots themselves, everyone in that branch should be mocked until they die.

You know what they say, it's the one branch where the officers are the people trusted to do the fighting.
      >When the shit hits the fan, the young Army private wakes up from a bellow from the First Sergeant. He grabs a set of BDUs out of his foot locker, gets dressed, runs down to the chow-hall for a breakfast on the run, then jumps in his tank. Pretty soon, the Platoon Commander arrives, gives him a big salute, and says, "Give 'em Hell, men."
      >Now take the Marines. When the shit hits the fan, the young Marine recruit is kicked out of bed by his First Sergeant, puts on a muddy set of BDUs because he just got back in from the field three hours before. He gets no breakfast, but is told to feel free to chew on his boots. He runs out and forms up with his rifle. Pretty soon, his platoon commander comes out, a Captain, gives his Marines a sharp salute, and says, "Give 'em Hell, Marines!"
      >Now take the Navy. When the shit hits the fan, the young Sailor is eating breakfast in the mess room.. He walks 20 feet to his battle station, stuffing extra pastries in his pocket as he goes. There he sits, in the middle of a steel target, with nowhere to run, when the Captain comes on the 1MC and says, "Give 'em Hell, Sailors! I salute you!"
      >Now the Air Force. When the shit hits the fan, the Airman receives a phone call in his off-base quarters. He gets up, showers, shaves, and puts on a uniform he had just picked up from the BX cleaners the day before. He jumps in his car, and stops at McDonalds for a McMuffin on his way into work. Once he arrives at work, he signs in on the duty roster and proceeds to his F-16. He spends 30 minutes pre-flighting it, signs off the forms. Pretty soon the pilot, a young captain gets out and straps into the Plane. He starts the engines. Our Young Airman stands at attention, gives the captain a sharp salute, and says, "Give 'em Hell, Sir!"

        Anonymous

Reality is even easier. The F-16 will have been previously postflighted/preflighted after last flight. Pull the covers, open the canopy, pull and stow the seat pins and do a quick walkaround since you're there anyway even if the forms are signed off.

F-16s are quite simple to deal with making it easy to exceed 90% FMC rates during wartime and maintain that rate as long as necessary. Biggest LIMFAC in Desert Storm was aircrew rest, the jets stayed ready and rarely required maintainers work much over our nominal 12-hour shifts.

War could be brutal tho. The heat pump on my tent broke just before I left for day shift during which I lived in terror it would not be swapped by shift change, but our brave Civil Engineers swapped it out in time. (CE were legit awesome building so many facilities so quickly. Combat engineers make war happen and really should get more respect.)
