imagine how a bullet works with the primer detonating the charge inside. pressure activated landmines work the same way. there is no "oh i can't move now that I stepped on the mine". the charge detonates and that's it

But you are correct in that most nowadays are just initial pressure trigger or timed after initial pressure.

Off the top of my head bounding fragmentation (bouncing Bettys) mines are designed for step off because they have to hit waist height, and if they fly up into your foot they're not going to do that.

The delay element in a BouncingBetty is to set the height above ground that it detonates AFTER it had launched itself upwards.

See the delay charge? It was there so the leading man would continue on and the whole squad would be targeted.
The delay element is ABOVE the lifting charge, RETARD, it is ignited as the mine body is lifted and burns through as it rises to the designed height, then initiates the main charge.

There are two short delays for timing the height.
There is a long delay between the fuse and the lift charge to set the time between triggering and lift.
The delay still isnt the 'Hollywood meme', it fires whether the guy steps off or not.

Thats not the original, thats the US false delay version.
The actual german original only has the Verzoserung delays in the side chambers, not in the central channel from the fuze to the propelling charge.
The American M16 was copy of the German mine. Right down to the ~4 second delay. Easy to see on the drawings and easy to research if you care to.
Boobytrap switches do NOT include a delay element.
Switches used as pressure-release do NOT function after stepping-off, they are set with and existing weight (usually an attractive item likely to be picked up) and function instantaneously as soon as the 'booby' lifts the weight off the switch.

You can tie wires to them to cover a bigger area.
The prongs give the ability to camouflage the pressure switch or mine-fuze under loose soil or dust so only the thin tips protrude, making it harder to detect visually.
The delays only activate by the functioning of the lifting charge, so the mine has already started rising as they commence burning.
So, the mine has already functioned instantaneously on being stepped on

There are 'second-impact' anti-tank mines that arm on the first strike and detonate on the second impact, but they are rare, and specifically designed to defeat mine-flails and mine-rollers then detonate under the tank pushing the clearing device. They detonate immediately upon being triggered or can be double trigger(arm, fire) so they go off when the target is on top of it. There is no scenario where a mine does not go off after triggered, you cant hold your foot on it, you cant "put the pin back in" because there is no pin. This is a stupid TV trope, just like suppressed guns sounding like squeeky toys or being totally silent.
