I'm tired of idiotic youtube channels saying that this was italy's tank. They're fricking tankettes, their role is entirely different from a tank.

Harassing convoys and supporting infantry. Tankettes were especially designed for alpine fights, but were used in North africa simply because italy already made them and didnt have anything better available at the time. Italy thought the main front would be the alps again and their main foe france. Tanks are useless on mountainous terrain and can't travel through narrow roads, like the tankettes do. What a tankette is is basically a mobile LMG emplacement

      Anonymous

Heavy anti-infantry tool, immune to anything lighter than an HMG with some being equipped with 20mm guns capable of taking out a number of pre-war tank designs. The big benefit is that they're a lot smaller, lighter and more mobile, allowing them to traverse terrain that normal tanks can't. Of course it's moronic to compare them to tanks, they're not supposed to go head to head with them, it's like comparing motorcycles to cars and being surprised they have less crash safety features and cargo space

At least, this was what they figured. Then they saw how effective they were in Spain (Except the flamethrower variant which was actually scary)

Not like they were completely useless though. Supposedly their size helped in raiding convoys;, an M11 and 2 L3's broke through a South African line before retreating, and (Black Shirt) kids with molotovs held off the 22nd Armoured/Indian infantry with 2 acting as bunkers.

Factually wrong. Ethiopia was the most powerful kingdom of africa, with guns and mounted cavalry. They attacked mainly eritrean ascari and with an advantage of 15 to 1. Also when ethiopia won against italy the tankettes hadnt even been invented yet.
You want to know about a western nation who got recked by literal spear chuckers? Ask the brits and their war against the zulus

Why does it feel like they'd spend most of their time in tankettes in mountainous terrain, sliding or falling down the fricking slopes?
Like, I'm no tank expert but I HAVE played war thunder, and those things cannot go up hills for shit.

pro tip, you don't drive it directly up the slope

The Italians were thinking the next war would happen in the mountains again (as with WW1), so the thought process was their size/weight would allow them to easily traverse the smaller mountain paths/bridges.

The theory behind them is that everyone who used tankettes were too poor to build real tanks in sufficient numbers, not even a joke

Blame Warthunder of Tanks and Girls und Panzer
Italy was woefully underprepared for WWII, but early in the 20s they had a comparatively modern tank force; industrial capacities and bad leadership basically stunted any of the progress which they made

The "italy was technologically obsolete" argument is a meme. But the industry was really lackluster and the high command was made out of imbeciles. I mean they had radars and everything yet supermarina decided for some reason not to install them, it was absolutely insane

Tbf it was average in the first half of the war. You can't expect the italians to build heavy tanks with their limited resources and time. The p40 was effectively on par with the panzer IV, maybe slightly worse but could've worked just fine if they had the fuel, the ammo, and were not riveted

A tankette is a tank though, it's just a really little one. If it was developed anywhere else it would've been called a micro tank or something instead of tankette. Saying the role is different doesn't really make it not a tank since the role of a panzer 2 flamingo wasn't the same as the role of a tiger 2, but they're both still tanks.
