I'm planning on escaping society and living in the forest. It is an extremely cold place and very hard to access. I will be travelling on foot with a backpack and inflatable raft. What items are essential for my survival. I'm thinking...
1. Mushroom identification book
2. Thermal sleeping bag
3. Fire starters
4. A caged chicken to lay eggs
5. Fishing rod

What else do I need?

And if you can maybe don't stop at mushrooms and bring a book for identifying edible plants as well

Why not actually do it though? I know a guy who found $20,000 worth of gold in creeks and rivers in a few days. These guys have to hike in and out of the forest which consumes most of their energy and time so they can maintain their lives with bills and family etc. I have come to the conclusion our modern lives are bad for the environment and our own health and psychology. I have the opportunity to escape the rat race. I would be far better of financially and mentally if I didn't have to work so I could pay bills just so I can be unhappy and a loser in society anyway. Why should I keep trying to participate in a society I hate? I can come out every so often to buy supplies, sell my gold and contact family if I choose to do so.

I assume you don't care about laws and permits by your post. So some stuff I'm suggesting will be illegal depending where you are.

Chicken is pointless, it will get picked off by a predator. Learn to find bird's eggs. Grouse are pretty thick this year, turkeys too. Geese and other waterfowl are also pretty easy to pick off even by hand if they are nesting. Just grab the goose by the neck and swing the body around to snap the neck. Honestly tho the meat isn't great.

Ditch the fishing rod and look at fish traps. You can pretty easily build them too...at least the ones that don't need cord.

A firearm for hunting. A .22 would be best for small game and the ammo is light. No point in hunting things larger than a racoon, the meat will go bad before you can eat it. Racoon paw trap or three maybe. Racoon are bold AF, and will literally just jam their fist into a trap if they think there's food in there. Easy dinner.

Books on bushcraft and hunting would be a must, especially one with how trap, preserve meat, and how to skin and clean game. Mess kit to cook and drink with.

Rope and line. Tarp. Knife. Axe. Map. Compass. Shovel. Quality scotch eye. That's enough to build a long term shelter like a dugout if you want to stay hidden or a cabin if you DGAF.

Where are you headed? Scout natural rock shelter near flowing water if you can. There are often hidden places no one will find without specifically looking for them. A cave would put you weeks ahead of the game.

    Good luck with your LARP.

      Anonymous

Update on my firearm suggestion. I forgot about .22/shotgun combos. Double Badger comes in .22lr/20 gauge. That can get you all the small game and fowl you need. With the 20 gauge and slugs you could even take deer.

Not many can live like Forest Anon, and one thing you'll notice about the people who do is they usually just pack up and leave without telling anyone. They don't sit around chatting about it beforehand.

There is a screenshot where an anon messaged Forest Anon's friend on social media and his friend said he spent his life studying plants and spent more time in nature than most, and then one day he just left without saying anything. The real ones just up and go. This "live innawoods" craving is just a passing phase you'll grow out of. I recommend traveling or sight seeing or something if you're bored lol

You don't know me. I have probably spent more time in the forest than Forest Anon, my friends actually call me Forest Man (because I spend so much time in the Forest). I have been camping with my father for weeks at a time since I was a child. He also worked in remote areas and I never went to school in the first part of my life because I went to work with him instead. I have already moved away from my family and bought a house in one of the most remote locations in my country. The only reason I haven't moved into the Forest so far is because of several things stopping me. I have an elderly dog that can't walk very far, I own a house and a bunch of furniture and personal possessions I will have to throw away or store somewhere, I just got a job that's fairly high paying, I have a small business half started and my mother is begging me not to go and abandoning my financial obligations will just put me behind financially when I have just got in front. So I do alot of hiking and bushwalking but abandoning society is still a dream at this stage but in the next few years I will make it happen.

Guy who left home like five and a half years ago and lived in the desert before building a hut in the forest where he's been gardening, foraging, training mice and working horse ranches in town for extra cash. The FBI investigated him for seven months because they thought he was a terrorist. His file is 200 pages long and they were never able to find his place. He's still living out there today.

    How is this "escaping society"?

You take modern knowledge, technology, equipment and even a food supply, and then go scrounge around in the woods surviving on your stores of body fat (you are way too moronic to get 2500+ calories of food a day), stores of body fat you built from modern foods.

So how is this an escape? You're still in society. All land is accounted for. You'll just be living in the type of land society has deemed 'nature reserve' or whatever, which is still governed by all manner of rules and regulations. Sure you can break those rules but the point remains that you haven't escaped society, you're just living within it, transgressing its rules.

Hello, I live in the forests of Appalachia in the American South, where a lot of people live normal modern lives as farmers and fishermen and gator hunters and so on. I am employed, I have a job. I used to build houses, then I wrote books, moving on to killing hogs, coyotes, mountain lions, alligators, and so on for a living.

I'd recommend rural living over trying to become a primitive feral man, but I cannot stop you. You might need a hospital at some point, and herbal remedies can only do so much.

Survival is a lot easier if you have a weapon and/or traps to catch fish or hunt wild game, that solves most of your food question pretty quickly. However, with laws and regulations, this may require licenses or get you in trouble with the law.

A lot of the veterans from the Vietnam War were still living in the forest of Washington state after the war, deciding not to be a part of normal society after seeing children killed by napalm and grenade launchers and so on and so forth.

They lived in the forests for decades, hunting and fishing, camping and with cabins and shelters, some of them had guerilla cannabis grows protected by non-lethal Viet Cong style booby traps to scare off thieves and make money to buy basic stuff.

work. save all your money. ALL of it. no restuarants no snacks cook all your meals buy nothing.
    then
buy an extremely remote property. alaska/canada wherever wtvr. build a house/live in ur vehicle on the property/pay someone to build you a house
learn survival skills/grow some small scale crops/hunt/forage etc
eventually you'll have the skills to be self reliant. truly independent. truly free.
there u go. now you have a free and honorable life out of the pathetic rat race. your plan cant just be to walk off into the woods and find a bunch of gold.

this is a good start, but here is a few extra things you will likely need

    1. A good survival knife. Personally, I've found that a high quality karambit is the best for this.
    2. wire saw
    3. slingshot for hunting
    4. pole net for catching small game
    5. band-aids
    6. astronomy guide for reading stars
    7. truffle hog
    8. laser pointer

good luck, and don't let the /in/ losers itt get you down, they don't know shit about survival. I've been surviving the wilderness all my life and my experience is greater than anyone else here. I believe in you 🙂
