      You're right

The 249, RPD, and Stoner are better

Obviously the M60 you dumb shit. If the MG3 was better then we'd have just used it.
Oh wow, turns out spraying ammo and hitting nothing isn't sustainable for what's supposed to be a sustained fire weapon.

      >If the MG3 was better then we'd have just used it.

That's not even remotely true. We wouldn't have adopted the M14 over the FAL if that were the case. The US tried to make a better MG42 and failed until the adoption of the FN MAG.

The M14 is better than the FAL.

For what purpose? At the squad level, probably the M60 for being 5 pounds lighter and the lower RoF reducing ammo load. As a platoon MG, I'd lean towards the MG3 for the BRRRRT.

I'll take the M60 for practical reasons. The MG3 seems like an insurgent's gun, only good for ambushing targets huddled together.

That's a heavier bolt and was meant for special occasions but became the defacto bolt

The FN MAG is the world's best GPMG.
I guess the MG3 because while it overheats at least all of it's parts do something and wasn't a design copied by people that didn't know what the frick they were doing.

The FN MAG is an old heavy pig.
The PKM is a superior gpmg.

With modern materials it would weigh as much or less than either of OPs choices, i'm looking at you bipod and barrel shroud. It had a high rof, low rof and single shot fire selector. It was accurate enough at long range that they provided for it to accept a scope in single shot mode.

I figure a LMG/GPMG with a instantly adjustable rof that can double as a designated marksman's rifle would be handy.

MG-42 was a modern MG-34. If it was worse they wouldn't have committed to making them.

My maybe AI friend, the MG-34 was better in every way besides manufacturing and material costs. Since those issues have been fixed why not revisit a proven design?

              Anonymous

Because manufacturing and materials costs have changed a lot since 1934?

                Anonymous

Yes, they got cheaper. It would be easier and cheaper to mass produce a MG-34 now than it would be 80 years ago.

depends. The MG-3 is a true crew served weapon, while the M60 is more of a weapon that can be used solo. There's a reason SOF still use the M60

I mean it's not like the mg42's manual of arms didn't specify how to use it for assaults. The M60 is probably more comfortable in that role.

    In what scenario?
If I'm in a trench with a shitton of ammo and i just have to hold unconditionally, then the MG3. That's the scenario they were bought for in the cold war, when the thinking was we were going to be holding off hordes of polish invaders on the beaches.

If I'm on a wheicle doing convoy escort, then the MG3. Because rate of fire is preddy good when trying to counter an ambush.

of it is going on a patroll then the M60. Weight matters.

Anything in an enclosed space, M60. the MG3 is super fricking long.

    I have used both.

As a Danish soldier that has used both I just want to state the we got to a point where 23 out of the 24 m60e6s in our company where at VMEK(armoury?) getting fixed and only 1 m60e6 made it to the last field up last year while still being functional though It had a catastrophic failure during the last field op. I would take the mg3 just because it actually shoots bullets but that weapon platform is also very outdated.

Pic rel is oc, from last winter where the m/10 performed flawlessly(not the elcan sight tho) and the m60 just became a paper weight that you had to lug around.

The platform is a little fragile i guess. What are you breaking, for us it is mostly the fiering pin spring, though we do also struggle with the gas system foling up.

      I'm home guard BTW.
