If Russia does turn to mass mobilization of the population and human wave tactics, would they be able to make any territorial gains, or has technology advanced so much that sheer manpower can no longer accomplish the job?

I don't think mass mobilization would turn the tide for Russia. Considering the current logistical problems and how poorly russian professional soldiers are equiped, I'd like to know how the frick is russia supposed to manage 100k more troops. 200k more? 500k? 1 million? This is the recipe for an even greater disaster.

Presumably the idea is that they won't live long enough to need provisions. Sure, feeding a million people is a lot of work, but you don't have to feed them if they all died charging at enemy positions.

I wouldn't call it a disaster as long as they're vatniks.

Vatniks won't be the ones fighting, it will be forced conscripts who have no desire to kill Ukrianians. Vatniks are cowards.

Human waves stopped working in WWI anon. Add in heaps of precision weaponry and cutting edge 24/7 imagery, those morons will be walking into sharpnel. Besides, it doesn’t happen in a vacuum - if russia starts the draft to send hundreds of thousands into the grinder, NATO will also escalate. The US alone has ~500 HIMARS (idk how many M270s), maybe we’ll give the ukranians 50 or so. Maybe fighters. Certainly much more small arms and ammo. Maybe tanks.

The problem is that Russia has run out of equipment. They've been fielding T-62 tanks because most of their T-72 and T-80 and T-90 tanks have been blown up. I'm eagerly awaiting their museum piece T-34s.

Russia is buying artillery shells from North Korea. If they still had Soviet-era stockpiles that were usable, they wouldn't be buying more yet.

Their artillery is shot out. They were handing out Mosin-Nagants to DPR/LPR cannon-fodder. They're running out of even their shitty R/C model quality Orlan drones.

Throwing more bodies at the situation just generates more dead bodies for them.

      Anonymous

they didn't have a high enough proportion of bodies to material in the first place either, more bodies might "help" in that the shitty outdated vehicles could be screened properly, but it's still won't be enough in the face of the quality of their material and their supply situation

Human waves have sort of happened in the post WW2 era in places like Korea and the Vietcong tried it a few times.
It is extremely bloody in contact with weapon from those eras, the stuff we have now is far fricking nastier to the point they'll get picked up in mustering areas and sent to hell. Add to that, its really not going to achieve much without armour, air force and artillery all giving them some support, otherwise light infantry with no organic AA, anti armour is going to get fricking melted. It'll make VDV drops look positively civilised

The best bet would be to trickle them into active units as replacements and in some cases, reinforcement company strength units- even then you're really just got the clueless leading the completely confused.

      Anonymous

What weapons makes it more deadly? Is it the ability to just artillery strike areas where the enemy is gathering?

        Anonymous

Its really hard to mobilise a lot of people into a single area, especially if they infantry because they use up heaps of trucks, there will be tents, campfires and all sorts of shit 'happening' that will get picked up by satellites, drones and all sorts of stuff before even half of them probably know where the hell they are.
After that, they can just either dog them with precision or guided strikes until they're combat ineffective or dispersed enough not to be a threat

Its not like even in Vietnam when they could hide in the jungle or in Korea by sneaking around in valleys, behind mountains and stuff. Its really open in Ukraine which gives you two choices for moving:
        >Balls to the wall fast in light vehicles
        >Run across in the open on your legs
Both these are absolutely horrible things even if you do scrounge up some clearing arty on your side, because that just sort of telegraphs your general direction and they radio that back to command who unleashes fire missions so fast it'll make their head spin. Plus none of these fricks will have NVG's so the cover of night isn't real great either.

If they ever got to the front. Imagine your country doesn't even equip you properly and on the train to the front you're watching videos of airburst artillery
and ammo cooking off and burning tank crews to death.

Conscripts are cold, hungry, undisciplined, demoralized. They just hop off the train en route, walk to nearest town, break into the police station and grab guns, and become bandits on the land. Just like Asiatic armies of old.

I don't think conscripts have what it takes to overthrow Putin. But I do think the situation could become like Haiti where the government controls some green zones and the rest of the country is essentially anarchy lead by FAS ronin.

Daily reminder that the current Russian fertility rate is 1.7 children per woman and the replacement rate should be 2.10–2.14.
Every Russian death is a "forever" death that will never be replenished unless the fertility rate increases drastically.

And destroy their Logistics and Command & Control? They are super-FRICKED when that happens, lol.

It's even dumber than that. By the time those fresh conscripts are actually mobilized, the war will already be over because they had to divert supplies, officers and logistics for the mobilization, and all those were already lacking at the front.

I'm not going to believe Russia is doubling down and outright declaring war and fully mobilizing their military until I see an official public announcement. It seems like an insanely stupid idea, even for Putin at this point, and the man may have gone delusional and possibly a bit whacko cooped up and isolated from his advisors but I do not believe he's THAT fricking moronic. Besides all the reasons like timing and logistics, it would be an admittance of failure up until this point, and a absolutely humongous gamble if he still loses which, given the amount of material support Ukraine has and their sky high morale, is a fair likelihood.
