if people could only use 22lr, would militaries go to using handheld electric 22lr miniguns, or would it just become a bunch of american180s?

what else they gonna do, not give answers coinciding along the rules of a thought experiment?

They literally made new ammo specifically for the American180 because .22lr leads the barrel up in no time flat.

        22ilarco (22mag shortened).

So they put a jacketed 22 mag bullet in a 22lr case. Wouldn't have copper washing or normal lube have prevented leading, even at the incredibly high fire rate?
I feel like this is more indicative of the ammo quality of the time, instead of inherent issues to 22lr that still exist.

            >So they put a jacketed 22 mag bullet in a 22lr case
Wouldn't work. They simply made a slightly shorter WRF.

            >So they put a jacketed 22 mag bullet in a 22lr case
22lr uses a heeled bullet you dingus, 22mag (and 22wrf) has conventional in-neck cannelure bullet seating, the body and the rim are larger.

            >Wouldn't have copper washing or normal lube have prevented leading
Copper washes cut down on leading but nothing like a jacket does.

Also there's a modest increase in powder capacity due to the wider body.

So a normal .22LR cartridge runs up to around 25,000 PSI. In this magical world can we load it to, say, 60,000 PSI?

Also, does anyone know a way to estimate changes in velocity using large changes in pressure? Like, if we have a known projectile weight of 40gr, a known pressure of 25kPSI, and a known velocity of 1250fps, can we then calculate a rough velocity if the pressure is increased to 60kPSI?

I hate the idea of a rimfire-only paradigm so much. Glad we have centerfire. But Yeah, with cartridges that small and light, we’d probably have/use variable cyclic rate machineguns with 1000rd+ combat loads. I say variable because why not? 22lr would still be controllable even at 5000rpm. Prob useful too in any case where a minigun is useful.

Here you go anon. Mess around with this:

      http://kwk.us/powley.html

Check the pressure box and input pressure in CUP. the computer doesn’t give a perfect conversion from CUP to psi so I use google to figure out the proper CUP value for a given psi.

        Anonymous

I used the calculator, and apparently at 60,000PSI the .22LR produces 4297fps with a 40gr bullet out of a 20" barrel.

I entered everything accurately, but I find the output a little unbelievable. If we loaded .22LR with a high explosive, we would exceed .220 Swift velocities? I kinda doubt it, unless some explosives anon knows of an explosive which can propel a 40gr projectile to 4300fps with a 1.7 grain charge.

The computer produces realistic results at <65k pressures . Screenshot your inputs and post em

I should note the computer goes a little haywire beyond appropriate barrel lengths for the overbore ratio. Example:

I plugged in the info for a 60kpsi 22lr and am getting a realistic 40gr@2400fps = 520ft*lbs from a 10” barrel. But apparently the same load from a 70” barrel produces 5100fps (2300ft*lbs). 19,000fps from a 90” barrel kek (31,400ft*lbs). It gets more ridiculous the longer you go. So just stay within normal ranges.

I don't know, but they'd certainly save a bunch on body armor. Level IIIa soft armor would now be good enough, and thus soldiers could drop a bunch of weight.

Good thread. In 22 world I'm rocking something like the S333 for every day carry. Just like the am180, making a bunch of little holes quickly is best.

So, I've been inspecting my new Tippmann for the past few days. Have other honey-dews to finish before I can go take it for a spin at the range.

It feels solid, but since it's handmade, some small machining imperfections are here and there (it's also a half-scale working replica anyway).

The entire disassembly looks like a nightmare, and the manual has small as frick pictures. Anyone who gets one, use 22LR ammo that burns well. You got six barrels to clean each time you're done.

180s are infinitely superior, i dont know why you would want a minigun in any real situation aside from mounting to a vehicle or aircraft

I'd imagine they would realize how stupid they've been and start adopting higher powered calibers to fight with.

You'd probably see extremely long bodied, pointed rounds for maxing out range, and plastic rounds containing a tungsten needle as standard, because it's the only thing that would punch through even the lightest armor.

If you're willing to stretch your definition of "22lr", you could load it way, way hotter than standard, overbuild the guns to accept the higher pressure, I bet you could get an ultralight projectile to 5.56 speeds, on the far end.

Long barreled guns with lots of ammo and a high fire rate would be adopted by the military
and they would probably start handing out suits of kevlar armor with short words for close combat
with infantry vs infantry battles basically being all about endurance similar to knight/heavy infantry battles in the medieval ages but with pea shooters
Spears, Bows and Crossbows might also make a comeback
assuming missiles and rockets would also be restricted to 22lr size then Armored vehicles like tanks and IFVs would probably be equipped with dozer blades and spears with HEAT warheads
Though tanks might be entirely replaced with IFVs
Possibly you could have some weird Modern form of cavalry with Quad bikes instead of Horses also equipped with Normal Spears or a Spear with a HEAT Warhead for AT use
Aircrafts might also use Spears with HE warheads and Sharp reinforced Wings to be used as swords
Though a primary tactic In air combat might be to just shoot a bunch of 22lr into your enemy's engine intake or exhaust
