Maybe. Anything it hit on an unarmored flesh body would be destroyed. Those are big and going very fast, doesn't matter if they aren't the actual penetrator that's far more energy than any small arms bullet. But they obviously aren't explosive either so if one hit you in a limb and ripped it off you could still survive if the blood loss was dealt with quickly enough and you got treatment. People survive losing limbs all the time.

You're allowed to own up to 25lbs of DU with no paperwork and no permits. Oak Ridge has published their DU machining procedures, including feeds and speeds. Figure it out from there.

i don't think you can buy DU on AliExpress though

Why did they use a sabot round against infantry? Loader error?

You can hear at least one of them yelling "sabot" before they fire so I'd assume it was intentional

flight time of about 6 seconds so the target was about 9km away which I assume is well beyond the maximum range of a slower HE

The loader sounds like he's looking for more HE to load up but they've ran out of them so the commander tells him to load up sabots just to not let the group disperse and get away. The last shot "shreds them to pieces" apparently, hence the cheering

Yes a section of sabot will kill you. If you watch some footage of tanks on a static range you can see the impacts of the casing and it's fast as frick and can sometimes be around 100m out.

Off topic but it's amazing how the french word for " old boots" or savate have become the progenitor of three different words

    >sabot from the practice of stuffing fillers (like old boots) into a cannon barrel
    >sabotage, from the practice of putting old boots on train tracks to detail a train. Also saboteur
    >savate or french kickboxing, derived from the shoes these "kickboxers" used in a kickboxing match

      >sabotage, from the practice of putting old boots on train tracks to detail a train.
      That's moronic.
      >The English word derives from the French word saboter, meaning to "bungle, botch, wreck or sabotage"; it was originally used to refer to labour disputes, in which workers wearing wooden shoes called sabots interrupted production through different means.

If you got hit by the dart, which has most of the shot’s energy, what would happen? Obviously it would go through you, but how much of the dart’s energy would be sunk into you? I have next to no knowledge of fluid mechanics, but I assume a human body doesn’t have enough mass to pose a noticeable barrier to a DU or tungsten alloy dart with that much energy concentrated in such a slender shape. Would it just punch through as if you were no more than a piece of paper? Would you scatter, but as a result of air pressure following the dart?

Just spitballing here, but I think you'd pop like a balloon. Not as a result of air pressure or because you put up significant resistance to the dart or anything like that. It's just that you're mostly incompressible fluid, and a supersonic high density dart tearing through you is going to dump a lot of energy into you all at once. That's just simple displacement*volume work. I'm not going to say that the air pressure affects are negligible (I had to take thermo, not fluids), but they're going to be negligible in comparison to the pressure generated by the levels of hydrostatic shock we're talking about.

If the dart was the size of say a nail, it’d probably go right through you. But if it’s regular sized I’m sure it would rip you apart

I remember hearing a story from an Abrams crewman that shot at a group of hadjis with a sabot round. One of them was hit and fricking exploded and covered the rest in viscera, and they stopped shooting back after that.

Straight to a closed casket funeral if they could find whats left of you.

Its for this reason why it is strongly recommended to stay the frick away from friendly tanks if a tank duel is going on, because these things might just shotgun across the terrain and turn you into soup

hey anon, if i sent a mini anvil at your torso at 600mph would you survive? idk man

seriously though even if these things were slowed by air resistance from 3000 mph to even 100mph and hit you broadside it would still kill you

baseballs travelling 100mph can break a rib and damage some organs, now imagine the baseball weighs 33 x more and is solid

I wouldn’t want to be stood in front of a gun regardless of getting hit. You’ve seen what happens when some raghead runs behind an rpg as it fires.

Before separation they have the same speed as the penetrator, which is 1700 m/s. This is Mach 5. they will rip you apart when hitting you downrange, until they are really slowed down

yes, the sabot petals are very dangerous and might kill you if you were hit by one. tank crews are trained not to fire them over the heads of friendly forces for this reason

This was a real issue for the US Army in Iraq, troops couldn't be positioned within 45^ of an Abrams because of the risk of the sabot jacket peeling off at an angle and splattering a marine
