Icebreaker gap

Is the icebreaker gap real? We have two new icebreakers approved for construction with 1 expected to launch in the next year or so and commission around 2025 for the Coast Guard. Do we really need these new icebreakers? Do we need MORE icebreakers? Should the Navy look at buying some of the Polar Security Cutter ships the Coast Guard are building?

The entire arctic race kinda just collapsed with the hopes and dreams of the Russian people, but if the last 30 years are anything to go by we should probably build an overmatch anyways, just in case.

Yeah, that's my thinking as well, even though we probably don't NEED it, china just built some icebreakers too, and the US's current two icebreakers are both 20+ years old.

Thankfully the PSCs look to be quite good all things considered, one of the first PC2 (polar class 2) rated icebreakers in the world and they're being built for but not with several offensive weapon systems in-case we DO need to militarize the arctic regions.

Imagine how comfy it would be one one of those in the artic when the nukes go off. You're comfy at the top of the world and everything south of you is burning.

That is until you run out of fuel and/or food.

Pic related is Healy earlier this month on its first polar voyage in 7 years, and it's 3rd time ever to the north pole since entering service in 1999.

Do you think they're allowed to take some time to ice fish?

if its all gonna melt then regular boats work, and the whole area would just be a missile playground anyway.

For the icebreaker gap to matter you need to be conducting some kind of foreign trade or at least have trading partners. So.... not really.

The Northwest Passage is likely to become and remain an important shipping corridor and it isn't a bad idea to have a few spare icebreakers handy.

If Canada wanted to at least pretend to be a real nation we could match Russian icebreaker numbers and take a load off the USN in what should be our specialized niche

But instead we just accept being a protectorate and let our military wither

Canada is also buying two new icebreakers, don't worry.

Wont be launching until the early 2030s though.

I hate our procurement so fricking much. $7.25B CAD for 2 icebreakers that are years behind schedule while the US started their program years later, will be getting theirs sooner, and it's only costing $1.9B for 3
It would probably be cheaper and faster to cancel our icebreaker program now and pay the US to build an additional 2.

Yeah kinda wild how cheap they are all things considered.

Also their capabilities on paper seem pretty similar as well, both are polar class 2, both are somewhat similar in size, though the US's seem to have more berthing available.

You guys should. The Northwest passage is going to be a legit thing in 20 years. Enough warming and you can make it from New York to St Johns to Japan lickety split

      >literal billions of people from Africa, Asia, and South/Central America flee from the equator and southern hemisphere into Europe and North America
      >whitey goes extinct
You realize this is basically the goal of the whole "climate" thing, right? Destroy autonomy of people in developed countries and then flood the few European descended people left with unending waves of other people.

IMO we need to resurrect that nuclear cruiser project that got canceled because of SALT and use it's power plant for a nuclear ice breaker since the ruskies have them and they would be our primary adversary in the poles
