when is the best day for cold calls to get tge manager on the phone? Asking for a friend

      OP

Boomers like to camp the door in the morning after their Denny's breakfast so you never wanna call when the stores just opening, as a rule of thumb. As for days, Tuesdays are usually the slowest. Fridays are always busy (naturally) and on Monday the people who had to work themselves up to spend money over the weekend come in, but really, there's no reason to buy a gun on Tuesday

      What's your weirdest customer?

Probably a tie between the guy who comes in intermittently to warn us about CERN and the large hadron collider in Switzerland and the trust fund Redditor who lives in cargo shorts and makes us check availability for obscure Soviet calibers every time he stops by. There was also a guy who always insisted on showing us the "new shells" he bought for his Ruger LCP, which were invariably some sort of gimmick ammo, like RIP rounds. Caught a felony for beating his wife though so we don't see him anymore.

Thank you for the info 🙂 Its kind of normal that the manager is bussy, not there or eating something... so getting them on the phone sucks balls. Im sure my clever friend lost some IQ points from hitting his head against tge table when that happens 10timrs in a row. In which city is your gunshop? We're currently doing calls in Texas

write me a mail and your shop gets the classic free sample parcel. I guess we got 5-10 left till its restock time which will take 2months. Guess we shipped out like 50 parcels to expand in Texas, Florida and Cali since Gold Guard came out 🙂

      OP

      Uhhhh

Any patient with 'fall precautions' gets the grippy socks nowadays (i.e. everyone).

Question: If I just wanna buy guns at MSRP when they release, whats the most painless way to that.

Check with the small shops and just ask if they can get ahold of whatever you're after. Can't speak for every store but we make out money on parts, repairs, and builds. If you want something we don't have on the shelf, we're charging whatever Lipseys, Zanders, or Davidsons has it for + $50.

how many NICS background checks do you fail per week?

Denials are actually super uncommon. Usually the types that know they'll get denied send in their wife/girlfriend/associate. Most denials are for DUIs people assumed wouldn't interfere with their purchase.

How many people's come in and ask for a piston AR?

      Almost no one surprisingly.

Is it ever even worth looking at the prices in the lgs or am I always just better off just finger fricking them and then ordering online?

Yes absolutely. Our cost can be 5-40% lower than MSRP and we'll always take your repeat business over an extra $100.

Real talk, are footjobs overrated? A girl tried to give me one a while ago and it was just so slow and awkward that I had to stop her and suggest doing something else not even halfway through. Did we do something wrong or is it just a schizo girl psyop?

Simultaneously overrated and overhated. Schrodingers footjob.

        >Yes absolutely. Our cost can be 5-40% lower than MSRP and we'll always take your repeat business over an extra $100.
Is this true even for commodity level stuff like single shot .22s and bargain bin shotguns or does it just apply to overpriced memeguns like sig and fn? Where does the profit come from? I've only bought guns through private sales, I don't know how gun stores work.

          OP

As a rule of thumb, the cheaper the gun the smaller the margin. Still though, never hurts to ask. I can get you a Turkish "AR12" for $100 if you ask lol. Most of our money comes from builds, consignments, parts, that sorta thing. Our cost on a basic AR is usually in the $300 neighborhood.

Has there been any gun that came in that was undervalued (customer says something like “just get these off my hands) and you snap up an b***hen rare rifle/pistol? Or if not what was a really cool rare trade in?

Oh for sure. We always offer free valuation cause consignment can make us a ton of money but if you need cash today we won't turn down a steal. Got an AES10B for $900, Yugo SKS the other day for $200, new Beretta M9A3 for $500. Pleasantly surprised a few grandma's with Browning Auto 5s that were about to sell them to the Pawn Shop for $50

In almost all retail there is no margin or profit on the main items, the profit as the guy said comes from accessories they sell services like warranties and in his case builds etc for example when you buy a TV the store makes no money on the TV they might even make negative money due to a manufacturer rebate which gives you a discount then the manufacturer squares up with the store anyways they make their profit from selling you the 100 dollar monster cables a TV stand or wall mount and then a warranty they hope you never use. Can you see some similarities?

How often do customers who’ve never bought a gun or done the background check randomly ask you to “run their name and see if anything comes up” before buying something. It may seem oddly specific but I’d hear that a lot at my shop and I was just a customer. Every weird white woman or dumb young kid would pester the clerk to just run their name in the magic computer as if you could just Google their name and pull up information on them.

Never actually gotten that request in the 4 years I've been doing this

Are the new Colt Pythons a good , well built revolver ? I have had a weird boner for one for a long time ?

Holding a new one next to an old one, the only difference I could pick up on was the finish (the old one was a bit better IMO) but even then it was a super minute difference. New Python is GTG in my book.

Can you as a costumer tell your LGS to get something directly from the manufacturer? I swear I heard something like that.

Depends on what it is - for warranty related stuff yeah we can contact the manufacturer on your behalf. As for product though, that all goes through distributors

Yes, that's standard. Though if you want to split hairs they are getting most guns from big national distributors like Lipsey's, , Lew Horton, Talo, etc. Big gun companies use distributors as middlemen and don't ship directly to dealers. Small ones do.

I'm honestly surprised this is a question. Most stores will do this no matter what they sell, whether it's tools or houseplants. Don't see what you want? Ask. They can usually get it. The only places that don't do this are huge corporate behemoths like Walmart.

I have genuinely never heard of any gun store employee stealing stuff out of the box your gun comes in. Most of the time, it's a cable lock, user manual, choke tube's, an incredibly specific magazine, or an equally specific rail. Maybe at a big box store I guess? Even if I had no scruples, I have no idea what I'd even try to steal. PMAG for an AR maybe? I get all the shit for cost and that's worth way more than any accessory that mightve come with your gun.

That said, I'm sure the same might not be true for a Cabellas or Walmart

Why should I go to a gun store instead of getting together with my friends, having everyone pitch in for an 07, and then everyone buys all the guns they want from a wholesaler for half price and does all their own transfers for whatever the ATF charges to process the paperwork?

So do I have this right? Each LGS has their various manufacturers they are open direct with (Glock, S&W, Sig, Ruger) and for those they need to buy so much a year and stock so much. Then, for any other gun that they say “let see if I can find it” they are just checking wholesalers inventory (Talo, Lipseys, Davidsons) right?

If its not in stock its most likely coming from the wholesaler?

True, but when other state have assault weapons bans, mag capacity limits, and things of that nature it kind of skews where the middle is

Greentext'd this one before but it's one of the more notable interactions I've had.

    >Super young looking Balkan kid comes in
    >"What's the cheapest gun you have?"
    >It's cool, not everyone is made of money
    >"We're selling these SCCY handguns for $100 a piece. They're definitely not great, but if you just want something to throw in a cupboard somewhere, you can take it home for a bill
    >Doesn't say anything, just nods
    >Pulls out his phone, starts swiping on it
    >"Do you have a..... "Glock four three x?"
    >You mean the 43X?
    >"Yeah that one"
    >This goes on for some time as he continues to ask if we have guns he's clearly reading off his phone
    >Eventually he settles on a Glock 17 Gen 5
    >At this point I'm pretty apprehensive but if he passes the NICS check it's whatever.
    >Tell him I just need his drivers license and a PTC or PTP
    >Gives me his drivers license
    >18
    >Doesn't even know what a Permit to Carry is
    >"Sorry, you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun from an FFL"
    >"Ah alright"
    >"So whats the smallest shotgun you have?"
    >Lol wut
    >"Smallest or cheapest?"
    >"Smallest"
    >Show him a Mossberg Maverick 88
    >He looks at it for about 3 seconds
    >"I'll take it"
    >"Alright, just gotta have you do a 4473"
    >"Whats that?"
    >Bro
    >Explain how background checks work
    >"Is there any way I can get it without one?"
    >100% convinced it's a gang related straw purchase at this point.
    >Finally get him to agree to do a 4473
    >E-Form won't let him go to the next page
    >He has non-citizen checked
    >"Are you a U.S citizen?"
    >He is not a U.S citizen
    >He is a Bulgarian
    >Tell him I can't help him, and I won't sell him anything

    Fast forward a week

    >Local PD shows up with a picture of the kid asking if he was at our store
    >He (somehow) had a legit SSN, as a non-citizen
    >Went to the local big box store, bought a Maverick 88 with a pistol grip (got proceeded immediately cause there was no record of him in the system)
    >Went home and blew his head off with it
    >They were still waiting on the dental records

Jesus. And yeah you CAN sometimes get an SSN as a non-citizen depending on your exact arrangement, it's mostly just used so that you have some 9 digit number to put on tax forms to keep track of you. If you're gonna be in this country working some shit job, the government would still really prefer to tax you on it somehow.
      t. has done taxes for a few illegals

on the bright side, it's better to use a shotgun than a handgun for that purpose..

Yeesh glad you (mostly) dodged a bullet (har) on that one.
      >>He (somehow) had a legit SSN, as a non-citizen
I'm not expert but there are a few special classes of immigrant, like refugee cases with certain minors etc. IIRC they are also exceptions for the normal citizens-only rule for ITAR, I'd have to go refresh myself but it came up recently in a (fairly though not 100% bullshit) case against SpaceX accusing it of discrimination.

        >special classes of immigrant

Not sure if a TIN (tax ID number) works for 4473s.

Also, there's a U-immigrant category now. When you are a victim of a violent crime, and your identity papers are stolen, you get a U-immigrant visa to stay in the USA.

Pretty sure that won't pass muster for a 4473, but then again, that kid went out of his way to conmit suicide by gun.

If you pay attention to cangen they sometimes post a (somewhat involved but hardly impossible) inforgraphic to legally buying guns in America as a leaf, the main thing was getting a driver's license which could be done in Texas with just "proof of residency for 30+ days" iirc, which could be proved with like a phone bill or something. I'll see if I can find it, I saved it because I found it mildly interesting the various ways to get through the law.

Obviously that's not what happened here but just a point of interest that yeah there are ways for foreigners to pass 4473s. Edge cases of old laws can be kinda interesting sometimes. Though the guide makes sure to point out that lots of LGS don't feel like dealing with it so you'd need to call around until you find one that will.

My LGS kicks people out if they smell like weed, or if they speak broken English, so I'm good there.

this, there are weird scenarios where non citizens can get a gun the Texas canuk pipeline is a real thing.

what do you think of kel-tecs? What carry gun would you recommend for deep concealment?

      OP

Kel Tec makes a lot of zaney plinkers and I'll always appreciate their place in the industry. That being said, they are, by en large, 80% injection molded plastic by volume. They also have a thing for allen and flathead screws, which are their preferred methods of keeping the injection molded plastic together.

As for deep concealment carry, when you get down their in size, you'll always be making compromises, just gotta decide where to make them. Size, shootability, and effectiveness - pick two.

      >Size+Effectiveness
Ruger LCP 380 - tiny, but weighs like 4 ounces and has no barrel length so it sucks dick to shoot

      >Size+Shootability
NAA 22 MHG - awesome little folding revolver. Although 22 mag is a bit anemic, it's a super smooth shooter and it has a great folding grip design that makes it tiny, breaks up the silhouette, and renders it virtually indistinguishable from a pocket knife when clipped on a pocket

      >Effectiveness+Shootability
Smith and Wesson Airweight - pretty run of the mill snub-nose 38, but perplexingly light. Makes for an easy carry. Still though, not super small.

      Personal pick is the NAA.

      [...]
      >woman
      >specific model
      >cash

Doesn't that just set you off that they're leveraging the system to commit a potential felony?

It's unfortunate, but there's not much I can do about it. Still put out a call to the other local shops tho to give them a heads up.

Is there a way to find out if a manufacturer is going to do a production run of a certain model? Specifically, I'm looking for a new Ruger Bearcat with the ~4 inch barrel. I haven't seen any model of Bearcat for sale in a few years and I don't were to start asking about it.

Unless our rep tips us off we don't really get the inside scoop on what's being produced when. We can check when the last time the inventory for an item was changed though. Gives us a pretty solid idea of whether or not it's something that'll be coming back in stock - if it was updated a few weeks ago, we can set our system to notify us when it's back in stock, if it was last updated in 2019, probably SOL.

Not my shop ofc, so do you due diligence, but this is the only new Bearcat with the 4" barrel I could find in stock.

LCP is pretty hard to beat, especially for the price of the gen 1's now. I have my eyes on a p32 for the lightest carry automatic, but I will say that ejector screw has me sus. No exp with naa, but aways thought they looked fun and that's about it

I knew a guy who had a Ruger LCP as his center console/glove box gun. Thing was a piece of crap. It nearly fired out of battery once. Could’ve been the ammo he was using though.

I’ve been considering a .22 magnum revolver because they sound more fun than standard .22. How does it shoot and would you say it’s worth it?

Slide was having issues cycling and was able to load a round but didn’t chamber all the way but trigger still reset. Admittedly this was a one-off and it’s been years so this could’ve chalked up to any number of factors

How many people try to haggle with you on a daily basis?

Almost every customer asks some variation of what my best price is. Haggling is part of the fun, and if there's no room to move, they appreciate knowing. Answers always no until you ask

They're a ton of fun, esp in revolvers. That extra kick goes a long way - makes it feel less like a BB gun. Worth it in my book

Where can I get an M1897 that hasn't been totally beat to shit and/or bubba'd?
