I want to start kayaking, since my state doesn't require any registration or anything of the sort. Just a life preserver in the kayak. I have a 100lb, 11 month old puppy I want to train to stay in the kayak when she's a little older and a bit more calm.

I don't know the first thing about purchasing a kayak. I won't get an inflatable one due to puppy claws, but might for solo outings so I can pack up on my motorcycle. What does PrepHole recommend for a good starter two seater kayak?

If getting a tandem kayak, make sure the seat can be moved to a more center position when using it solo. depending on how much you weigh, you can even choose plenty of single person kayaks that have a higher weight capacity and added length. the dog can sit right behind you or right in front of you. a lot depends on your budget, and lots of kayaks can't be found in store so you usually have a hefty shipping fee and have to wait for stock. lastly, kayaks with a wide open floor are probably better for dogs because they have some wiggle room instead of being completely confined to a tiny open space. this kayak is not cheap, but it would fit the bill well and has extremely good out of the box features for the price tier.

Budget isn't much of a concern. I thought about a solo kayak and saw one that was about 11' long, but my dog is very large and very tall. I'm 170lbs and 5'11. Then again, 13' is a little long to put on my WRX.

I do like that kayak you linked though, and likely will order one. The nearest dealer is only an hour and a half away too... Tempting.

Then it's the one to get honestly. 13' isn't that long in person, lots of solo kayaks are that long as well. that brand is known for being easy to paddle too, a lot of kayaks honestly paddle like shit when they are that wide.

I imagine that has a lot to do with the hull design, and me being in the midwest I will just be on small lakes and rivers. Once my dog gets a little older to sit still in it, I think it'll work out great.

yeah it's the hull design. a lot of companies just give you a generic design, where as crescent is known for being good paddling. it definitely makes a difference.

What's the utility of a 2 seater kayak over a small canoe? Where are you going that you wouldn't benefit from more storage and staying dryer? Rapids? Canoes can deal with a decent level of white water and sea states.

Honestly for a dog I would take a canoe, they won't jump out of it all the time and they can swim anyway.

If I had a full size pickup or van I'd get a canoe. Kayaks are lighter and I can mount them with ease on my car.

Understandable, but you might find carrying a canoe is hardly more difficult than a large kayak in terms of roof straps and haulage anyway

Kayaks are generally faster and easier to maneuver since you're not crossing your paddle over or using the j-stroke

The advantage of a kayak(specifically a sit on top" os that you don't have to worry about taking on water. also, easier to get back into out in the water if you fall out, this is important if your dog jumps out and you have to get them back in. it's just more foolproof than a canoe. I have a canoe, and love it, but honestly they are NOT more stable than a 35" wide kayak, unless you're talking about a ridiculously wide canoe like an old town 133, which I'm sure does not paddle so great due to the width.

Saw all that. Thanks for the details. I did notice a lack of a fishing rod holder, however. I do a lot of catfishing and relaxing in the lake with a bell on my rod would be nice.

well the appeal of those kayaks is also that you can mount lots of gear tracks, making it very versatile for accessories. I don't know why that specific one doesn't seem to have them pre-mounted like the others, but the recesses are built in.

Do you really have to take your fricking dog. Why are pet owners like this. Seriously. Get a grip.

          Vaxxed and 5x boosted.

Dogs are humans too. I do not have kids yet, but I frequently have outings with my brother and sister, nieces and nephews and we bring our dogs along. What, a dog should just stay locked up at home all day?

          Kek. Never taking it.

It’s a god damn dog. Why is it that people either leave them tied up to a tree their whole life OR treat it like it’s a human child with no middle ground

If it’s not a hunting or guard dog it’s a fricking fur baby, dog dad.

I swear I’ve only ever seen homosexuals take dogs outdoors. Even places where dogs aren’t allowed, cuz muh doggo.

She's a hunting dog, guard dog, and companion. I have a middle ground in that I don't take her to places I can't take her. She's also trained for dock diving and various agility courses. So no, she's not a fur baby.

Of course I do. My dog is part of my family and she makes solo excursions fun. I take her camping with me and everything. She's not some little frick stick dog she's a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
      >I'm a vet nurse
And my veterinarian takes his dog with him everywhere he goes, including to work.

With a gogbyou are better off with a sit on top kayak, the length vs your ride is kinda stupid if you get the proper rack, the scupper 14 would be a good beginner to experienced parler choice

Another option is the sea eagle rated for up to class four whitewater, if it can handle that it can handle pupper claws, also it has 6 to 8 drainholes so it it self bailing ,if you go inflatable

I won't be going into any whitewater, but I will look into that alongside the crescent.
