Just get the smallest gun of whatever caliber you like.

.32ACP was the standard police pistol caliber in Europe for decades. Even given obese Americans 9mm is fine.

9x19 is probably fine and if you want small but effective that's where the sweet spot is right now. If you want more, 357 SIG.

    say it with me kids
    >shot placement will always matter than caliber
    >shot placement will always matter than caliber

the point of a gun is to put holes in things. In order to incapacitate someone with comparatively low power handgun rounds, you need to sever the nerves along the midline of the body. As it turns out, poking various size holes into important bits of anatomy doesn't make so much a difference as where the holes are, if you miss centerline with .22 you're also gonna' miss with 9mm or .40 etc.

Except you can miss 3 dimensionally like in a certain famous shootout.

in what scenario would you be defending your life but the perpetrator is turned exactly 90 degrees to you?
At Miami-Dade they were chasing a felon.
Also, bullet technology has improved a lot since then.

          >exactly 90 degrees
The bullet went through his upper arm and stopped before reaching the heart. Arms can swing back and forth therefore it doesn't require their torso be at 90 degrees to you.
          >bullet technology
If only they used 22 lr. Also Paul Harrel recreated the incident with modern 9mm and it was still insufficient.

Maybe he has a shooting stance thet puts him at 90 degrees

The one that was “lost” by being complete morons? That one right? If you have access to long guns, decide not to bring them, and then get shot by a guy with a rifle you deserve it.

But seriously 5.7mm is the superior handgun caliber if you have a 5in barrel.

Honorable mention to Tokarev. It is a very good pistol and very good round.

What makes you think it's not sufficient? I carry a pocket-9mm and I have it loaded with regular FMJ ammo, the same that I train with and have fired thousands upon thousands of rounds. I believe that 9mm is plenty if you hit your target but if you are a poor shooter, it doesn't matter whether you miss with a .22 lr or a .44 magnum.

Glock makes a smallish 10mm, the high caliber derringers posted probably better meet your criteria however. Someone must make a .40 single stack come to think of it.

Detonics Combat Master if you have style but I don’t like the removal of the grip safety, it scares me. Hence the Sentinel.

.357 mag or .44 special, maybe .44 mag
Check out the Colt King Cobra Carry. 6 rounds of .357 in a small package

If you don't want a revolver, there are always subcompact semi autos in .40S&W. Or the gigachad Glock 29 in 10mm which at least one anon here has and shoots
