I think my ar barrel is off center. How do I know if it's just the handguard or the actual barrel?

I think my ar barrel is off center
How do I know if it's just the handguard or the actual barrel?
Is it ok to shoot like this?
Should I send it back for a replacement?

throw that shit away and get a real AR. Rails on an AR are cringe.

But my brother got it for me on my birthday
I just want to know if it's fine like this or if I have to ask him to send it back

Use a scope mount to align your reviver and rail, if the gas block doesn't touch you should be ok.

The gas block isnt touching the rails but it's very close to one side
      Is that ok?

Are you sure it's not the handguard?

It might be but I'm asking because I dont know myself

I just asked my brother about it and he said it's normal for it to be a little crooked and off center like that

ah family gifts are different. Keep it forever and never sell it.
I would take the whole thing apart and reassemble it. you don't know what sort of shoddy work went into it. The gas block does look canted.

          I suppose
I know he bought it from psa but I guess for now I should probably figure out what tools I need to take it apart just in case

it's the handguard, don't worry about it. when you zero the optic it'll be on your receiver so the hardguard won't matter. if you later have a laser on the hardguard that can be affected but practically shouldn't be a huge issue.

          That sounds good to know
But I do have the magpul sights that came with it, I put them on because I always figured it was best to first learn with irons, but are they gonna be affected by them?
I could just adjust the rear one to align it good, right?

            Anonymous

correct. you'll adjust whatever sight system you have. honestly the whole "learn irons first" thing is kind of overblown nowadays. everyone and their mom has access to decent optics nowadays. irons are fairly easy to use at "normal" distances and if you're going to be shooting irons at something long range (rare nowadays) you can adjust for distance with a lot of sights.

            >I know he bought it from psa
            >psa
send it back but be prepared for it to be a bitch of a return process.
if they give you shit or fail to respond start bitching or arfcom and it will get done.
its fucking psa if the monkey who assembled it fucked it up that obviously thats not the only thing he fucked up.

          >I would take the whole thing apart and reassemble it.

My dad bought one of the parts kit AR from century a long while back after i warned him not to and the thing wouldnt hold zero so he disassembled it. Fucking SAND literally poured out of the threads where the barrel screwed into the receiver and made the barrel angle to one side somehow. Cleaned it out and slapped it back together and it worked fine afterwards.

Take it off and inspect it. It's not that hard. You'll know if it's bent or not if you place it on a flat surface, like your kitchen counter or table. You will be able to rock it back and forth in place or see light cominng from under it.

With the hand guard off, you can more easily rule out other issues. Such as the barrel or upper not being proper.

Use a glass table, window, or mirror. Most glass products are dead straight unless the glass is like 50 years old and has started to flow.

Not that anon, but glass is a solid unless heated to liquid phase. Reason why old windows appear to settle: https://www.quirkyscience.com/glass-liquid/

Old glass manufacturing standards were not capable of making glass with a consistent thickness, one end was usually slightly thicker. When you hang a pane of glass logic would dictate you put the heavy end down, this was done typically with the intention of fooling brainlets in the future to use big words like superviscous and supercooled.

Common issue with "free floating" guards

      >Rails on an AR are cringe
Plural, yes, but a single optic/sight rail along an M-LOK guard is tasteful

is it attached to the upper receiver loosely?

      Anonymous

Grabbing it by the receiver and handguard, it feels sturdy and tight, but looking at the rail section where they meet, it's not exactly flush
It's kinda subtle but they arent 1:1 even
      Is that possibly it?

Odds are the rail is not quite on the barrel nut straight. I'd email the manufacturer and ask them what they'd like to do about it before you shoot it, but if you do shoot it, it seems very unlikely any problems would arise.

Loosen the screws clamping it to the hand guard and rotate it 180 degrees. See if the offset follows the rotation. It may just fall into place.

    OP here
I removed the handguard and it took me a minute to figure out what the smaller screws were for but I think they were to spread the handguard and make it easier to remove
I put it back on and it still looks a little off center but no so much as before but looking where the handguard and receiver connect, there used to be an extremely small gap on each side, with one being slightly bigger, corresponding to the off center side
Now that gap is gone and the gas block is slightly closer to the center
    Did I do good?
It was my first time doing this and I had fun with it

I accidentally stripped the rear third screw hole that actually clamped the handguard down

Its still clamped tight and it screw in normally, but now it's only 2/3 it had before to hold it tight

welcome to shitty rails. If possible just swap the rail for a simple carbine handguard w/delta ring assembly and grab a set screw FSB from RGUNS

        Anonymous

They ship with pretty good rails now compared to what they used to. They’re made by Midwest industries.

          Anonymous

Psa has always had options with midwest industry rails. However not every rail included on an upper is mi. This is about as bad as all psa has fn barrels which is a blatent lie.

You could probably get a replacement screw. Dont panic too much, you should be ok. The handguard isnt a "vital" part of the rifle so as long as it doesnt rotate or come loose, you should be fine.

Good job on getting the barrel aligned, I can't tell for certain what might have been the issue but it looks good now. Do a function check, double check the other parts and enjoy your gift

        Fuck

it'll be fine, just keep an eye on it to make sure the handguard doesn't twist or anything down the road. That could be an issue if you're using a front sight on the rail but if you're just using a dot it's a non issue

if it bothers you, get an mcmr and call it a day
