I really like my old ar7 but it doesn't work for shit with subsonic ammo. Would it be reasonable to try trimming a few mm off the recoil springs to make it cycle more consistently? I've heard the newer Henry manufactured ar7s use a softer recoil spring but I can't find them for sale anywhere.
There's nothing wrong with your gun, this is a problem inherent to all 22LR firearms. This bullshit where """standard velocity""" doesn't cycle autos, and the fact that suppressor users will intentionally cuck their barrels to <~4 inches to make supersonics subsonic.
This is just what happens when people try to use such woefully outdated technology as 22LR.
We tried to fix this problem with pic related but it's a poor solution and the bullet rarely stabilizes in guns due to the retarded standard twist rate of 22LR of 1:16.
Forgot pic
I love those. They keyhole like bastards.
>inherent to all 22LR firearms
It doesn't affect revolvers or manual-action rifles.
The standard twist rate of 1:16 prevents usage of modern pressure ammunition at a proper bullet weight at subsonic speed (e.g. Aguila SSS), hence why ELR 22 guys are forced to miss out on BC gains...
>revolver
...and the cylinder gap on revolvers is what necessitated the soft lead bullet that in turn necessitated the 1:16 twist.
22LR and its users have created their own vicious cycle of fuckery, shoehorning, and retardation.
>22LR and its users have been a disaster for the human race
>the cylinder gap on revolvers is what necessitated the soft lead bullet
how? its still fine to shoot copper plated 22 in them right?
he's full of crap, you can shoot harder bullets through revolvers just fine. Yes it's safe to shoot copper plated .22 in them.
Copper-plated 22 will always be high velocity (I.e. high pressure) stuff. You don't see copper-plated standard velocity for a reason.
There's copper plated subsonics
Where?
It's advertised for small game hunting I.e. out of a rifle.
Bullshit
aguila makes copper plated shorts you dingus
A little copper plate isn't going to change the hardness of a bullet, it's just to keep your fingers from getting dirty from the lead.
Or well thought out semi autos like
i think some of the bad reputation with 22lr has to do with quality control, from personal experience i do not buy winchester or remington ammunition because they will not cycle in my semi autos. those are literally the two most popular brands of ammunition in the country and gun shows clearly show idiots buying boxes of that garbage
cci costs just as much, maybe a penny more per round and you get good quality control and a variety of loadings. cci standard velocity works great. so do those tubs of filipino magtech ammo covered in turd wax for 7 cents per round. winchester white box? you're gonna get at least 5 duds in a box of 50 while you're paying for premium ammo
i dont think that was the case 20 years ago so people will tell you otherwise. in 1999 im willing to bet remmington thunderbolts weren't shit
As someone who pretends to be an engineer I would mutilate anything without a backup.
There are ways
Try calling Henry's customer service and asking to buy a new spring.
Thanks for the advice guys, I'll check with Henry and see if I can buy a spring, if not I'll chop mine up and report back. I can buy a replacement for my current spring for $20 worst case.
I'de try these except most of the appeal of 22 for me is being able to buy it for 4 dollars a box at Walmart.
Take out one of the springs, go to a hardware store, and buy ones of similar dimension, but different wire gauge.
That way you have not mutilated the original springs, and now have a few to experiment with.
wait are you guys saying that normal 22lr bullets are straight up exposed led???? Wouldn't that be very unsafe to handle if you werent super careful about washing your hands? I always notice my fingers turn gray but ive never worried about it and always get some food after shooting. Been super irritable the past few months..
>wait are you guys saying that normal 22lr bullets are straight up exposed led????
Yeah? What else would it be? Do you not read the box or do you just buy whatever and ignore the grains, speed, etc.?
>Wouldn't that be very unsafe to handle if you werent super careful about washing your hands?
Solid lead metal isn't really that bad; shit, fishing sinkers are lead too. It's the dust you have to worry about. I mean wash your hands, no shit, but you're fine.
>I always notice my fingers turn gray
From all the carbon and fouling, most of which isn't lead. .22 is dirty as fuck.
>but ive never worried about it and always get some food after shooting.
Anon, there's this amazing invention called public bathrooms. You might have missed their existence in the corner of every store for the past 100 years. They generally have soap and sinks.
>Been super irritable the past few months..
Aren't we all. But seriously fuck the heat; nothing makes me more miserable.
>doesn't work for shit with subsonic ammo.
Maybe picrel would work - it's subsonic but with a 45g bullet so there should be more backthrust on the bolt.
Why are you trying to shoot subsonics out of an AR7? Not hating genuinely curios
