I grew up and still live in rural Central IL. I'm 30, single, own my own house, have a dog and two cats... Anyway, I think it is time to seriously consider moving.
I'm a very PrepHole person, but there is little in the way of PrepHole that I like here within a 4hr drive. I want somewhere that is still somewhat rural. My skills are in IT(Systems, security, and networking) so I can pretty much go anywhere.
Cheyenne WY, Bozeman or Missoula MT, Eastern WA, Boise ID, or UT have all been in my sights - what does PrepHole say?
I KARL ZANDER GREW UP ON MILITARY BASES; I HAVEN'T BEEN MUCH OF ANYWHERE ELSE
Colorado
I considered CO, but WY seems more my kind of thing - which is why I picked Cheyenne. CO would then be only a few hours down the road. I don't think I'd live in Denver. I'm not a city person.
Cheyenne sits high on a desert plain. So expect gale force winds and harsh winters. I-80 gets shut down frequently. There's also the military base so idk how much noise that produces with fighter jets. But I agree it could potentially be a nice place to live if you can deal with the downsides. You'll have access to the Fort Collins area which provide a ton of outdoor recreation. There are also the Madres/Snowies to the West. And you'll get the benefit of a more conservative vibe with lower cost of living with no state income tax. I guess Colorado is more pay to play that gives you closer access to outdoors, nicer weather, and other amenities but also comes with liberal policies and a more higher cost of living.
I live in Decatur, IL so while I'm used to never ending winds - our winters aren't generally too harsh. I can handle 0-20F temps and high winds just fine, but I've never really dealt with a True North winter. So that being said, I have no clue if I'd put up with it. Winter is from September to May up there, correct?
>fighter jets
I love that sound. I served in the Army for 6 years and I'm a bit of a car guy and heavily into mechanics and engineering.
>conservative vibe
That's a plus. I live in a deep red part of a blue state. I'm more across the board than I am conservative, but I get along with conservatives better than liberals
>liberal policies and a more higher cost of living
Both of these are also what turn me off of CO. WY is appealing due to the lack of state income tax, lax gun laws, and low cost of living. Though, I was looking at houses in Cheyenne and it was definitely higher than where I live. Casper seemed closer, yet higher still, to where I live.
>Casper seemed closer, yet higher still, to where I live.
I've driven through Casper and it honestly looked like a shithole. I'd never live there personally.
I dropped a bunch of street views on Casper and seems three times better than Decatur.
yeah but how close is it to outdoor recreation? It's kind of stuck in the middle of nowhere. I'd choose Green River/Rock Springs over Casper.
Fair point, but it seems like there's a lot to do surrounding it compared to where I live. We have generic lakes at every small city(Save for Lake Shelbyville, that's a nice lake) - but south of Casper has mountains. Sand dunes, reservoirs, and Yellowstone is closer.
But as you said, Fort Collins is closer to Cheyenne and has a significant difference in quantity and quality. Green River is also certainly appealing though, and hadn't considered that so thanks for the heads up there.
Green River is a good place to live. Small town feel with friendly people. And there is world class fishing at the Gorge right in your backyard. The Uinta Mountains are about 2 hours south in Utah. And then you have the Wind River Range and Jackson to the north. SLC/Park City is also only a few hours away.
Hot damn, and there's a perfect position for me at an IT company in Green River... 90k a year starting sounds insanely high. That's 30k more than I make now...
Colorado is the designated containment zone for your type.
>Bozeman
Bozeman is full and too cold for you.
Over christmas week we had wind chill down to the -60s, though that is rare. Humidity was also high.
Eastern Washington is pretty flat (by my standards, it's got rolling hills but it's dry and no trees) unless you're right next to the cascades or right next to the border with Idaho. Unfortunately the property prices are pretty high there, and the eastern side of the cascades is full of tourists.
Central IL is as flat as it gets, so anything is a welcome change of scenery. I was thinking of being by the Cascades, but Green River sure sounds appealing now.
Green River is nice, you're halfway between the I90 corridor and the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie national forest and Mount Rainier national park so it's great for PrepHole stuff. On the west side you're obviously going to have even higher property prices because Seattle is right there, but if you're in the tech industry it's a good location.
Also frick off and don't move to the west side, I want to afford a house one day and you tech people keep driving the prices up.
Are we talking about two different Green Rivers? I'm talking about Green River WY...
Utah seems nice, but St George might be too far south for my blood. Much as I like to ride motorcycles and the like, that's a little much for me.
Not him but there's one in Washington as well
I say go back to your homosexual alien website instead of posting all these irrelevant details here
Hello fellow Illinois tech worker, I moved from Chicago to St. George UT very recently and love it! It's the fastest growing metro in America for good reason. We get 300 plus days of annual sunshine and there is so much natural beauty that you feel like you're living in an Instagram feed. People are generally friendly and it's a lot safer than Vegas and Phoenix and LA and definitely Chicago lol
Do you want a wife and/or kids?
I do, but doubt I'll find any in WY.
