I fucking hate this meme so much.

>fails to factor in clothing, in many cases
>fails to factor the presence of bone in the animal body, which when shot will likely shatter and cause its own entire wound
>fails to factor in blood loss due to bullet wound
>fails to factor in damage to the lung cavity causing asphyxiation/drowning in blood
>fails to factor in CNS injury causing immediate paralysis/"stopping power"
>fails to factor in adrenaline
>fails to factor in the "oh shit" factor animals have when they get shot or even just hear a gun shot

Ballistic gel is just another one of the myriad of moronic memes that gun hobbyists are forced to endure in the name of """advancement in bullet technology""". The only thing that gel actually does well is entertain people when shot in slow motion footage, and anyone who claims it has anything to do with actual effect of firearms on living animals is smoking crack.

This is why my father specifically donated his body to a lab that does work with the DoD. They contract with the company in order to use corpses for ballistics testing. He wanted to make sure his body was used for this purpose. We looked into it before his death and unfortunately all testing results are top secret and to there is no way to get any sort of details (reports, video, audio) of the results. So while there is no guarantee it wouldn't be used for some other weird purpose, he was pretty confident it would be used as he wished

The only reason I would not want my corpse disrespected is because of the pain it would cause my loved ones, but I would expect them to be pragmatic about it too being my kin is similar in mind.

i'm doing the body farm thing. They'll be tossing my body out into the scrub near San Marcos and studying my corpse's return to the soil for forensic anthropology shit. My meat'll feed the coyotes and buzzards and deer will apparently chomp the bones for calcium (which was first observed at that facility).
They'll even pick up my body for free if it's within a few hundred miles. I just want my remains to benefit the native wildlife because I love hiking and hunting and observing fauna. Don't believe in any of that spiritual shit but it just feels satisfying knowing I'll be feeding the animals that've brought me joy throughout my life.

        >and anyone who claims it has anything to do with actual effect of firearms on living animals is smoking crack.
Well clearly. But that's not its purpose. The purpose of gel is NOT to simulate a human or animal body. It's purpose is to provide a consistent medium to compare bullets between each other.

Meat is fine for making cool videos (as is gel), but it's too inconsistent to be used as a testing medium. It also introduces the variable of shot placement to the equation which makes the data worthless.

          Anonymous

          >variable shot data
Nah. As long as all shots hit the target it’s valid. It’s not a qualified test at all, it’s quantitive. You can see rounds hit a rib and compare them to ones that don’t, (and how they perform hitting a bone, do they break it, get stopped, etc). You see lack of penetration/over penetration. You can see things like the hollow point cavity being filled with clothing and leather jacket skin and failing to expand. It’s a test people should see. The US Army just shoots cadavers and pigs to do it.

I meant, it’s not quantitive, it’s qualitative. It has a purpose just like gel tests do. The old days they just shot pigs to do it.

        Anonymous

        >Not OP. But the entire point was depth in a static medium?
Anon, it doesn't matter if the medium is "realistic" or not so long as it's consistent and then you calibrate it to actual bodies. Which is what the FBI did. They did a bunch of work and ended up with a very specific repeatable gel formula that could be put together consistently and had decently measurable variation for bullets. Then they tested rounds and compared it to data on shooting humans. Remember this is all probabilistic, the point is averages over hundreds to thousands to tens of thousands of encounters. In the end, the FBI found that 12-18" of penetration in their specific gel equated to a reasonable range for use against actual people in normal clothing.

THINK ANON: go measure yourself right now, starting from your chest how far is it to your back? How far to get to your heart or lungs? Spoiler: sure as frick isn't 18". The reason for the numbers is that the gel ALREADY takes into account bone and muscle and so on. That's the point! If it can go 12-18" in gel consistently then on average it's going to go deep enough into an actual body even from a bad angle to be able to hit something important. After that, it comes down to shot accuracy and luck. More shots on target in reasonably tight groups more quickly.

These days this is an easy target for any modern load to hit at <20yd which is all that matters for handguns (gel doesn't exist for rifles, everything does fine with rifles). So it mainly separates out absolute total moronic memeround jokes like RIP. But gold dots or lehigh or the like screwdrivers will all do completely fine. In terms of pure performance, handguns are a solved problem. Only morons like OP go for "muh realism" on paper rather then just shooting more and getting better.

          Anonymous

I'll add that, in principle, if one is truly serious about testing it is necessary to use the EXACT same gel formula, conditions and so on. Which is all public information and doable, but some people randomly use other gels or the like since they're cheaper but that in turn means they can't actually be compared to the FBI ones.

But again, in actual practice none of this matters because it's easy to get something that is Good Enough™ for any common caliber. Defensive shooting just isn't that challenging of a use case in terms of physics and materials, the primary factor is the shooter themselves, to a lesser extent the gun, then some other stuff then bullet dead last assuming it's a normal one.

Most of what you described is not based on the performance of the bullet, but the placement of the shot, of which we already know the predictable effects. I you get shot in the heart, you die. CNS, parts stop working. And so on.

It's not supposed to do any of those things. Penetration in gel is a unit less comparison of different ammo, not a model of what happens in tissue.

While the average gel-shooting youtuber doesn't have much of a clue about why and how to do ballistic gel testing, it's quite clear that neither do you.

  11. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

It's a standard consistency material to compare different rounds penetration capabilities. That's not at all what happens inside a human or animal body. There's muscle, bones, etc that affect the bullet trajectory. That's simply not what a bullet does inside of a body, it's just to show that under ideal circumstances the bullet expands equally and penetrates X amount more than a competitor. We may actually be making a mistake using those as a standard measure, because manufacturers are just trying to make rounds that look good in gel tests. Imagine if they were trying to make rounds that do the most damage possible to an actual body...

      Anonymous

Presuming the gel test indicates good performance in humans then the test itself isn't bad, but people should be aware that bullets recovered from corpses don't always look like those from gel tests.
Recovered bullets from autopsy look more like bullets recovered from heavy clothing gel tests.

You're moronic. Ballistics gel solely exists to:
    1. Identify if a projectile can reliably hit an average male's heart from a frontal chest shot through the sternum
    2. Show a hollow point's ability to expand through muscle tissue

It is not to see "how much damage" a bullet does. Anybody that thinks that is moronic. It's also flawed fundamentally for high velocity projectiles. A 40gr solid copper 5.56 from a 20" barrel will punch clean through a lvl 3 steel plate, while a .45-70 +P hard cast will stop cold. This is important for performance against bone, which is a factor in determining gel performance vs a real human target. Those same bullets will penetrate 6" and 60" in gel respectively. When 6" of gel is supposed to represent the sternum, my gut tells me the 5.56 will cut clean through it without losing much of its energy, allowing it to reach vitals even in a "worst case" chest shot.

It's just a method of comparison you fricking imbecile. It's not meant to be an analogue to flesh or clothing or whatever, it lets you take results of one type of ammo shot in one place and directly compare it to another type shot elsewhere BECAUSE ITS THE SAME MEDIUM.

Surely there are plenty of cadavers who donated their bodies "to science" right? I don't see why there couldn't be an official human medium test that could be officially conducted and then released in a journal.
