I first thought that dual-wielding sword is a meme, but after watching this video (and other videos from sword and dagger/swordbreaker style), I have realized it's actually the BEST sword style.

Basically, don't think your 2nd sword as a sword, think of it as a shield, and you are golden.

Obviously having a sword/shield combo is still superior, but it's easier to carry two swords in a day to day setting.

They actually do, most samurai use 2 swords, and Spanish swordsman also use sword/dagger.

      inb4 but warfare
Warfare is formation combat so a spear is superior.

Samurai did not dual wield their swords, they switched which sword they were using based on their situation.
Sword + dagger is a little different than sword + sword.

They definitely do, Musashi did and he created a whole school for it.
In fact, I think there are many other dual wield school.

You need to use two swords against multiple enemies or you are dead.

There’s virtually no evidence for samurai dual wielding on the battlefield. The katana (or tachi, depending on the year) was their primary backup weapon and it is designed to be used with two hands.

              >their primary backup weapon
their primary backup weapon was a pistol.

Samurai didn’t even use their swords. They used the bow with their sword being the last resort

lol dummy, Musashi was famous in part BECAUSE so few people used the two sword style. even after his fame/school/books/etc. the vast majority of samurai still only learned the use of one sword.

Musashi was famous because he went around beating the shit out of all the esteemed "sword masters" with a stick.

Anon, nobody used a sword to fight, especially in Japan. It was just muh honoraburu DUERU (where the historic Musashi mainly beat the shit out of people with sticks) and cutting down peasants who offended you.
And as a personal defense weapon inside your home.

    Sword and buckler is superior.

      I'll expand on this.
Most people have very poor coordination with their off-hands, and striking, parrying, or binding with a sword or long dagger is not a trivial thing.
A buckler offers a considerably greater margin of safety and protective coverage, at a roughly equivalent weight, and it can also be used as a deceptively powerful striking weapon.

Yeah, as I said, a buckler/shield is superior.
But it's a pain to carry day to day.

You wear it on your belt. You can run a strap from the buckler's handle. Easier to carry than a second weapon.

Thinking of it as just a shield is weak minded, because it IS a sword.

2 swords is not seen a lot because it requires one to train both sides. You'll see it in the Dog Brothers where people use 2 sticks. Both sides able to throw the same shots, taking advantage of angles (caused by the opponent maintaining the same lead foot most of the time) and striking with 1 weapon right before the other, or both at once. It's a big force multiplier and you can use it to clear a path for the followup shot.

With swords it's a lot easier because of how deadly the points make them.

Some other duel wield styles you guys might want to check out: George Silver's sword and dagger, Musashi of course and the Dog Brother's guys (wince they're fighting with it against resisting opponents)

You can transition it to a stabbing weapon easily, but I think once you recognize it as a shield first, it's easier to understand the roles of two weapons.

How about a sword and a heavy gauntlet?

      Anonymous

      No range.
And holding the sword is dumb.

If you have some kind of mechanical hand that can hold the sword and you can hold it as well, that will be awesome doe.

I was thinking more like have sword in one hand, and the gauntlet in the other for blocking, punching, and grabbing.

          Anonymous

          Yes, that's my point tho.

          The gauntlet has no reach.

What's good about the dual wielding is that the short sword/dagger provides reach.

This works because they fight like the Japanese do. good luck stopping a proper longsword cut with one hand. If you've done any sparring with swords you'll know how easy it is to blow through someone's guard with a proper blow.
These guys don't even step into their strikes and don't follow through with power, they just tap each other lightly so it's no wonder they think this works.
It might work if you're using thrusting swords since redirecting a thrust is much easier due to leverages.

    >In 1596, Musashi was 13, and Arima Kihei, who was traveling to hone his art, posted a public challenge in Hirafuku-mura. Musashi wrote his name on the challenge. A messenger came to Dorin's temple, where Musashi was staying, to inform Musashi that his duel had been accepted by Kihei. Dorin, Musashi's uncle, was shocked by this, and tried to beg off the duel in Musashi's name, based on his nephew's age. Kihei was adamant that the only way his honour could be cleared was if Musashi apologized to him when the duel was scheduled. So when the time set for the duel arrived, Dorin began apologizing for Musashi, who merely charged at Kihei with a six-foot quarterstaff, shouting a challenge to Kihei. Kihei attacked with a wakizashi, but Musashi threw Kihei on the floor, and while Kihei tried to get up, Musashi struck Arima between the eyes and then beat him to death. Arima was said to have been arrogant, overly eager to battle, and not a terribly talented swordsman.
Hew can one man be so based
