Supposedly Ukraine is intentionally targetting any and all long range radar systems to make it so f-16’s have a better chance. Most news seems to point to June as when they are firet ready to go.

        Anonymous

They lost quite a few of the super-dooper expensive ones too, the Container OTH radar and a few of the big core, long range systems that network into the S-400 and 300's
Biggest hits though- those A-50's that got splattered
They're important because they used to provide both the early warning of launches and the go-no-go on systems to spool up on the ground and get their stuff on the way to intercept Ukrainian missiles (and decoys) being sent in. If you don't have that airborne early warning, its kind of going to be more luck than good management that anything gets shot down deliberately... and a whole lot more 'friendly fire' incidents without that centralised command platform

Judging by how Ukraine is still flying Cessna sized drones into Russia, there's a few holes in air defense. Frick they may as well siphon off money into a new yacht for all the fricking good its doing them anyway

It could be a bad thing.

picrel was fired a while back because the army nearly mutinied because he started auditing them and demanding MoD control over the military budget and brought in buddies from the tax department to work out where the money was going. He purged 1/3 of the generals and started to get shit in order. We're all lucky he was fired, the war might already have been won by Russia if he'd stayed in the job.

The new guy does have a a legitimate background in economics but that isn't necessarily the whole story, Elvira Nabiullina governs the Russian central bank and is a genuinely talented and gifted economist and administrator but even she is constrained by the Kremlin's directives - she tells them "we can't responsibly do x for y reasons", they say "we are doing x, make it work", and she is forced to make the least catastrophic decisions to sustain 'x' for as long as possible even though it's ultimately deleterious for the economy and not a decision she endorses

                >So there will be another mutiny and this supposed to be bad thing?
I don't think mutiny in wartime is going to be something that le monke takes lightly. Especially against his newly chosen guy.
It would be necessary to significantly tarnish him first, with failures or corruption or something.

He was also going to radically reduced the size of the officer corps, gradually introduce professional NCOs, get rid of cadre-strength units, and put a greater emphasis on quality over quantity. Ukraine would have been in real trouble if monke hadn't sacked him and put Shoigu in charge.

                >He was also going to radically reduced the size of the officer corps, gradually introduce professional NCOs, get rid of cadre-strength units, and put a greater emphasis on quality over quantity
Ukraine really dodged a bullet there though you could also say that if Russia was going to be all rational like that, they probably wouldn't have gotten into the war in the first place.
It's a bit like how we say that the Nazis could totally won if they weren't Nazis doing Nazi things.

The thing about reforming a military, especially one that has had so much corruption for as long as Russia, is that it takes a massive amount of time and resources. The new MoD can't unsteal money, parts, munitions, and industrial capacity. Nor can they bring back the trained units, stockpiles, and literal archeotech that has been lost with a snap of their fingers. Doing this in the middle of the war and expecting results is like giving a stage 4 pancreatic cancer patient chemo. A miracle could occur but more than likely it's only delaying the inevitable and causing massive amounts of pain and disruption at the same time.

                >more than likely it's only delaying the inevitable and causing massive amounts of pain and disruption
Eh, I think it's always going to be good (for Russia) to reform. It's only painful for those losing money and power through it.
A little reform is better than zero reform under any circumstances.

There's a tonne of reform needed obviously but anything that causes better information to flow up the chain, that causes resources to get where they're needed...is going to be beneficial. To Russia anyway.

    >This war is LITERALLY the result of the U.S. patterning with Ukraine over a decade ago to develop newly discovered Ukranian energy reserves to replace Russia as the supplier of Europe
Why do you think I pointed out the war was over gas?

As for Russia's reliance on EU gas imports they could have sold to China when they were clearly a growing market in the 90s but they decided that the slightly higher EU prices were worth losing long term Chinese dependance on Russian gas.
Short term thinking created long term problems and now Russia is going to go broke because they can't produce anything.

    isn't wrong.
And it's not even a fraction of all the reasons.
There can be more than one thing to be gained by doing something, invading Ukraine was in Russia's interests for many reasons, resources had a lot to do with it but there are loads of other reasons including just domestic survival. Russia has been expansionist for quite a while now and Putin wants his empire.

Woody is in no way “fired” he’s being PROMOTED to Secretary of the Security Council, which is the government body which the Minster of Defense is a part of — Woody is now the top official of that body. At worst it’s being “kicked upstairs”. So it could be Woody himself was feeling overwhelmed with the Minister post so Putin put him in a less responsible role, but also one befitting his status of close and trusted Putin friend, As the Secretary he’ll probably just be passing down Putin’s wishes to the Ministers on the Security Council, chairing meetings, the typical BS. Putting an economics guy in Defense is probably a signal that he’s committed to overhauling the military along with the MIC.

I’m not sure that is ACTUALLY a benefit Putin will realize with this move though. This new guy won’t have the power of being Putin’s close friend backing him so he probably won’t be able to bull through resistance like Woody was able to. Woody has the ability to make his generals and bureaucracy do as he says because everyone knows Putin will side with him no matter what. Who knows maybe that constant resistance is what wore Woody down and why he’s getting promoted out of the responsibility; maybe he got tired of constantly having to tell underlings to do as they are fricking told. There’s a LOT of rot in the Russian military which won’t disappear because Putin really wants them to perform this one time. So even though a numbers guy is being sent in he may just get continually fricked over by the rotten structure instead. Maybe the massive rapid changes we saw was BECAUSE it was Woody with his untouchable political armor as the cause and with this new guy they’ll start to slide right back into form.

Petrushev had it previously so it seems like it should be a real job.
Though in Russia, the job is more about who's in it. Putin was PM for a while and was still President the whole time.

What I'd like to know is what happened to Petrushev, whether he's quit the war and retiring to his Dacha or yacht or he's getting sidelined to prevent him replacing Putin or he's being groomed as a replacement to Putin, who the frick knows?
