literally, nothing, if hypersonics aren't meta by mid-century then this question will be valid.

It's kinda funny that Russia throwing their hypersonics at pointless soft targets is giving the west a good idea of how to better defend against them. If anything hurts their chance at changing the meta it'll be Putin's vendetta against apartment buildings and power substations.

Hypersonic is a meme. It's just a classification based on speed.
Missiles are always getting faster as tech gets better, eventually most missiles will be hypersonic.

holy absolute frick, no its not

The US power is utterly fricking crumbling because they have a complete void in Hypersonic capability

low trajectory, super-manuevering-in-all-phases-of-flight HGV's was the new "cold war arms race" and this time the US lost huge, and as a result, its utterly crumbling at warp-speed

        >pic related

This has been claimed in naval terms since the Cold War because ZOMG Russian Superfast Anti Ship Missiles the US doesn't go tit for tat in a development race on every pointless dead end
Throwing on 'supermaneuvering' makes it even more hilarious to anyone who has looked even slightly at the meaning of words - A hypersonic Glide vehicle, meaning that it's reliant on aerodynamics for maintaining its profile
Now you want to add supermaneuverability, a term meaning that it is able to perform feats that rely on intentional failures of aerodynamics to perform nose pointing - the upshot is increasing drag by orders of magnitude....in A GLIDE vehicle....This is where people start the point an laugh meme

The US developed hypersonic missiles for ABM final stage intercept in the goddamn 70's with the Sprint hitting Mach 10 - Just like the Russian's with the compartmentalized T-14 remote turret, this is the rest of the word forgetting the US did this quietly decades ago and our enemies are just starting to catch up and claiming it's a quantum leap forward

Anon, we already knew it wasn't a true hypersonic missile in the sense of how the US uses the term. What is going to be retcon'd, is how vatniks will claim they never said it was hypersonic and we are lying when we claim they did. And of course they will still call it a hypersonic missile in the next thread or a few posts later.

Ever since it was revealed we've just been laughing at it for being an air launched ballistic missile, it has never been a real hypersonic missile.

It's an iskander on a MiG-31, two old platforms. There's nothing new. Most ballistic missiles are hypersonic during their reentry phase, so no extra work is needed if you just reuse one and use a different vector.
The only thing that went as usual is Russian propaganda.

Pretty funny the MiG-31 is involved because the story was the same with that plane and its predecessor, the MiG-25
    >MiG-25 unveiled.
    >hyped up as a wunderwaffen by puccians
    >"look bro it can cruise at 2500 km/h and go at 3000 if needed"
    >"whoaaa it can climb so fast, the pindos are no match now"
    >US relays that propaganda by claiming they're "deebly goncerned" by that new weapon
    >Soviets jubilating
    >US start developing a counter weapon for it, the F-15.
    >After a while, the US got their hand on one of them
    >Turns out it's a piece of shit plane
    >Oversized engines plagued with problems
    >Engines can either melt or blow themselves up at full throttle
    >Plane is a brick and can barely maneuver
    >Radar is liquid trash
    >F-15 turns out to be the real superweapon all along, considerably outclassing anything the puccians could produce after that, and still to this day.

We're seeing the same now with S-300/400, the Kinzhal meme and their underwater wunderwaffe is likely just a torpedo diagram they resized on GIMP.

      Anonymous

By the way, if the counter weapon ends up being the real superweapon, the logic can also apply to THAAD.
If patriots are enough to stop their "hypersonic" weaponry, THAAD is going to wreck Xi's toys too.

The US is working on real ones though, not moron shit like Russia.
And as of now there is not much use for them since they cannot be mass produced with current technology and a re prohibitively expensive.

    >One software bug could have directed the Patriot to attempt to intercept an incoming missile at a point below ground. In one case, this bug may have caused a Patriot to turn back and dive into the ground.
Nice to see that bug fixed by blowing it up and showering everyone below with some globohomosexual love.

Hypersonics are cope in the purest sense of the term. The Chinese and Russians know they can't compete with the US conventionally, so they talk up their super weapon that can potentially negate the massive advantages the US has.

The concept is finicky. Speed alone doesn't mean much, the enemy will just predict your arrival and set up an "ambush". You want speed+maneuverability or Speed+stealthECM or Speed+durability.

Nothing and you're a moron to think one was shot down. The US is developing hypersonics for good reason as well.

Can someone explain what’s special about Kinzhal? It’s just a cruise missile that reaches Mach 5, right?
If so, how was patriot able to shoot it down?

it was being hyped by the Russians as an uncounterable wunderwaffe
      turns out, it is counterable
      >how
it does travel really fast, but in a straight line
if you're able to calculate the trajectory in time, interception is actually surprisingly easy. Simple trigonometry.

I remember watching Missile defense as a little kid growing up in Kurdistan. Never seemed like the missile were “smart” or fast enough to target something traveling in a straight line. Insane.

It's not a cruise missile, it's an air-launched ballistic missile that's advertised as the more troublesome gliders and cruise missiles currently in development but it isn't one. Basically it's a plane-launched design similar to iskander but with more range. Patriot has been updated many times to better handle ballistic missiles after its spotty performance in the early 90s when this capability was basically an afterthought added to an otherwise an anti-aircraft system. With PAC-3 interceptor it's capable of shooting down most shorter range ballistic missile threats very effectively.

If you didn't know most ballistic missiles travel at hypersonic speeds during their peak boost phase and reentry, so the speed alone isn't inurmountable. A glider or a cruise missile pose different challenges than ballistic missiles and it's a very uncertain topic how much threat they pose and what they can or cannot do.

What makes you think republicans ever liked Russia? Aside from MUHRUSSIA DOSSIER which turned out to be a fricking complete and total lie what evidence do you have?

Laughing at puccia and their incompetence can go hand in hand with not wanting to give the man in heels in Kiev more money. It's not mutually exclusive.

Nothing. The actual threat has always been identified as hypersonics possessing high maneuverability, giving ballistic missile defenses very little time to react and intercept properly. Russia is not capable of this sort of design or killchain, China is with their hypersonic glide vehicles, and the DoD recognizes this.

Hypersonics like Kinzhals are not what you should be afraid of; what you should be concerned about are things like china's DF-ZF.

If there's any military technology the US isn't leading it's basically a safe assumption that it's a dead end technology with no real use bc the reason they spend so fricking much on the army is to never be behind anywhere that matters

Fun fact, V-2 rocket is very nearly a "hypersonic missile" by the arbitrary speed designation of mach 5 (it went mach 4.7)

Nothing went wrong woth hypersonics. The problem is that hypersonic weapons are beyond top secret because of the mass reduction technology used in them. There is a reason that cesium jumped in price in the early 90s when the chinese set off their largest nuclear explosives.

What the hell does caesium have to do with hypersonics outside of literal israeli space laser tier tech?
If you bring up the schottky effect, don’t.
