The US has a different definition of what a hypersonic weapon is. The Russians and chinese just use speed to define a system as hypersonic. Their hope is to strike a target before being detected or to outrun the defense systems. The US program appears to have the aim of eventually developing a hypersonic fighter jet/drone.

Boost-glide lose all advantages when it maneuvers because of it being unpowered. Every turn causes a loss in velocity, they're still easily detected from launch to impact from space based sensors, flight time isn't any better than a BM launched in a depressed trajectory, ect. So, can you explain the advantage they have over stealth smart missiles? They still have two ARRWs they plan to test, and will make the final decision then. They've had multiple successful tests of it, so it's not like it's a total failure. I always thought it was stupid to focus on such a shit design. The HACM/HAWC tests have been much better. They have 3D printed scramjets, and run on jet fuel, can be carried by many more platforms, cheaper, range is great as it gets the oxygen from the atmosphere, flies a much lower flatter trajectory than HBGVs you get the idea.

They could work up an IRBM with a HSGV and call it the Pershing III, the US doesn't do it because they believe to not need the capability, and whatever they'd build would be much more capable in terms of sensors and accuracy.

But the US has no desire for such weapons, they prefer to leverage their massive advantage in stealth and sensor integration to boost the capability of smaller smart munitions, that can be massed more easily and engage targets from multiple directions.

This is what's most fascinating to me about the Chinese mindset.
          >"We have X"
          >"Okay."
          >"YOU DON'T HAVE EQUIVALENT TO X SO WE'RE WINNING!"
Never mind any uncertainty surrounding what they *actually* have. To me it's always interesting how they see the simple act of saying you have a capability as *inherently* meaningful. It really illuminates the mentality they have behind stealing shit.
          >"America has Y, them having Y is associated with their strength and power
          >So if we just copy Y and say we have it, we also have the same strength and power!"
Naturally, if *they* can now say they have something that America doesn't have, then it means they're powerful in a way that demands America copy *them*. Never mind that what they have is copied from US shit from decades ago first, that doesn't matter to them. It never occurs to them that war between "peers" doesn't require 100% systems parity. God knows they don't have systems parity with the USN and AF, and yet they can barely conceal their war boners for the US Navy and Air Force.

tl;dr why do you think it's necessary for the US to have an *exact* counterpart to Chinesium HGVs? You don't think the entirety of the offensive inventory of the US is insufficient and irrelevant absent memesonics, do you?

Aside from the ease of intercepting ballistic missiles (including HGVs, or semi-ballistic) due to their deterministic flight-paths, they are very prone to developing a plasma sheath at around Mach 5 or above. The shock of entering heavy atmosphere heavily contributes to plasma formation. While the plasma sheath is up the vehicle is completely deaf and blind; it can’t communicate in any way and nothing besides a millimeter-wave radar can get through — which is useless due to very restricted useable range. We’re talking about -50 dB of attenuation, basically nothing useful will get in or out. To add insult to injury the plasma itself emits a specific electromagnetic frequency making it detectable by passive means — NOT that is required as the missile would be tracked using space-search radar and other early warning systems, and the flight path extrapolated from there. It’s just another layer of challenge for a ballistic missile.

So, these "hypersonic" missiles are useless for anything besides a stationary, large object which can pre-targeted. The West has spent a lot of resources into defeating ballistic missiles: GBI, SM-3, THAAD, David’s Sling, PAC-2/3 etc. Even Russia has S-400 (S-300 optimized for ABM). This is mature tech. So there is nothing stunning or special about a Kinzhal being intercepted by a Patriot.

Chinese missiles like the DF-21 are also easily-intercepted for the same reasons — what makes them dangerous are there numbers which, if China isn’t lying about those numbers, will overwhelm any ABM defenses likely to be faced.

      Anonymous

Plasma sheath presents a challenge but it doesn't present an impossible one. It is a misconception that it forms around the entire thing causing total comms blackout or that it happens exactly at specific speeds. it's very dependent upon shape and other factors. And comms blackout obviously doesn't happen for the entire duration, so all this put together, saying that the vehicle is completely deaf and blind is inaccurate and misrepresents its weaknesses

        >video on social media about something shot down over Kiev
        >social media declares it's the Miracle Weapon of the Month taking down the Death Star Vodka Bottle, shows random photos from the web as wreckage
        >Air Force debunks the hype, turns out it was just a rogue drone shot down
        >Next day, propaganda department "confirms" that the underachieving missile with the untrained crew did in fact shoot down the Death Star Vodka Bottle, because that's a "slap in the face to Russia"
It's Ghost of Kyiv gayry again. I guess their propaganda needs a new "silver bullet" after it was confirmed that Russian EW figured out how to jam HIMARS and GLB guidance.

Hypersonic weapons are supposed to cruise or glide for extended ranges above mach 5. Kinzhal is a rocket.

        It's a Mach 5+ cruise missile retard.

Calls the other anon a "retard." I've grown convinced the fabled Chinese IQ is about as real as Chinese Biological-Safety-Level Standards.

            >The overall design of the missile is shared with the 9K720 Iskander, with the guidance section modified for Kinzhal.
            >The Russian Iskander is a quasi-ballistic missile.[10] The Russian Iskander-M cruises at hypersonic speed of 2,100–2,600 m/s (Mach 6–7) at a height of 50 km. The Iskander-M weighs 4,615 kg, carries a warhead of 710–800 kg, has a range of 480 km and achieves a CEP of 5–7 meters. During flight it can maneuver at different altitudes and trajectories to evade anti-ballistic missiles.[11][12]

That's not a cruise missile you muppet the point of a cruise missile is to get under radar you're not going to be doing that at 50 clicks stop using language like you're trying to hide a ball under three cups to trick retards.
